Title: Computer help Post by: RED-DOG on December 04, 2007, 03:20:29 PM I use AOL and have done so for the last 5 years with absolutely no problems (So don't suggest changing my isp, lol)
This morning when I logged on to AOL, it caused my cpu to work at maximum capacity. when I logged off, it returned to normal. I can open the software with no problems, it only happens when I log on. If I log on from another computer, no problem. I have re booted my computer and my router. I have run Add Aware, SpyBot, and Agv anti virus. I have uninstalled and re-installed AOL I have done a system restore. I can use internet explorer and access the net with no problems, all other programmes are working fine. Any ideas? Title: Re: Computer help Post by: kinboshi on December 04, 2007, 03:29:45 PM Not being funny, but why do you need to open 'AOL'? For your email?
Title: Re: Computer help Post by: RED-DOG on December 04, 2007, 03:34:31 PM Not being funny, but why do you need to open 'AOL'? For your email? Because it's my prefered browser, I have all my links, messaging, favorites, bookmarks, emails, etc etc. I don't need to open it, I want to open it. Even if I never opened it again, I would still want to solve the problem. finding someone with the solution is a little harder! Title: Re: Computer help Post by: kinboshi on December 04, 2007, 04:27:55 PM Not being funny, but why do you need to open 'AOL'? For your email? Even if I never opened it again, I would still want to solve the problem. Well, as you've isolated the problem it might be worth contacting AOL support and seeing if they can advise. I've had a look and like Bongo said, lots of people with the same problem and no solutions. As an aside, if you are at all interested in looking for an alternative browser, I'd recommend Firefox ahead of IE. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: taximan007 on December 04, 2007, 04:34:17 PM I have both IE and Firefox on my computer, pre installed at time of purchase.
I have never used Firefox, what is the difference between the 2 ? Preferably in "simple terms", a lot of these technical questions pass me by completely. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Bongo on December 04, 2007, 04:36:22 PM It's better.
Is that simple enough? ;) Kinboshi: I believe AOL support have already fobbed Red off once already... Title: Re: Computer help Post by: ACE2M on December 04, 2007, 04:41:55 PM http://paler.com/forums/message-view?message_id=4438
you could try this, looks pretty straightforward. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: taximan007 on December 04, 2007, 04:55:55 PM It's better. Is that simple enough? ;) Kinboshi: I believe AOL support have already fobbed Red off once already... Couldn't be simpler thank you. In what respect is it better? IE seems to do what i need, perhaps i'm missing something Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Laxie on December 04, 2007, 05:03:58 PM I have IE and Firefox and prefer Firefox 100% of the time. Hard to explain, but once I got used to it, I was converted and would never go back to IE...except out of desperation. Even my kids prefer to use it when they're on their gaming sites...so must be something to it, but dunno what that 'something' is.

Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Jon MW on December 04, 2007, 05:19:24 PM Firefox is quicker, it may only be the odd second or two but there have been occasions where even that is enough for me to get frustrated with IE.
It can also properly handle multitabs rather than the cobbled together bodge that IE use (admittedly this is only a relevant factor if you're in the habit of having more than one page open at the same time). It also has the harder to measure advantage that everybody hates Microsoft, so when you have viruses and the like that exploit weaknesses in IE it isn't necessarily that there aren't similar weaknesses in Firefox - it's just that virus writers and hackers don't care about them. There are other minor advantages but I'd say these are my top 3 advantages Firefox has over IE Title: Re: Computer help Post by: kinboshi on December 04, 2007, 05:25:18 PM I have IE and Firefox and prefer Firefox 100% of the time. Even my kids prefer to use it when they're on their gaming sites...so must be something to it, but dunno what that 'something' is. Personal preference really. Agreed. Some people do prefer IE, and other Firefox. I like the way Firefox can be customised with add-ons to make using the web easier and more enjoyable for me. I much prefer the tabbed browsing that Firefox offers over IE7's attempt at it (and this can be further customised in Firefox). I've been told that it's safer to use than IE (as in protection from viruses and the like), but I'm sure someone more technical like Bongo can confirm that or not. So subjectively, I think Firefox is far better. I wouldn't be surprised though to see an objective comparison of Firefox and IE that shows Firefox to be 'better'. Run the following online scanner, supposedly the best out there: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Have you updated aol lately? Have you checked for an updated version? As for the recurring FF v IE debate there really is little difference, you get similar basic functionality and similar security issues. I use both in equal measure, FF is much better at some things and ditto for IE at others but both do as required so as i say personal preference is the only real difference. Try FF if you like it more then fine but don't let folks put you off IE with scary stories about viruses because there are FF specific viruses out there too! Anyone tried Safari for windows yet? I tried the beta some months back and had multiple crashes but i assume it's been improved since. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: RichEO on December 04, 2007, 06:44:10 PM Change ISP ;surrender;
Have you reinstalled AOL? Remove it and restart PC, then reinstall. Opera FTW. Have changed ISP Have removed, restarted and reinstalled aol Have no Idea what Opera FTW means. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Nem on December 04, 2007, 07:46:15 PM Opera is a web browser which isn't a RAM hog like Firefox and is better than Internet Explorer (far better than AOL as well!)
Export all your favorites and stuff and use a different web browser. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Dino on December 04, 2007, 07:49:05 PM Are you installing the latest vista compatable version of AOL because this can cause the problem you have,try an old aol9 disc.
P.s. Opera is the best browser. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: cia260895 on December 04, 2007, 07:51:07 PM Seriously have you tried running aol through internet explorer rather than opening up aol??

Title: Re: Computer help Post by: RED-DOG on December 04, 2007, 07:58:18 PM Seriously have you tried running aol through internet explorer rather than opening up aol?? How do I do that? Title: Re: Computer help Post by: cia260895 on December 04, 2007, 08:02:09 PM Just open up internet explorer the type in aol.com.
Title: Re: Computer help Post by: RED-DOG on December 04, 2007, 08:05:59 PM Just open up internet explorer the type in aol.com. That only allows you to access your email, and it closes automatically after about 5 mins. It's not youe own personal AOL with all your stuff on. Title: Re: Computer help Post by: RED-DOG on December 04, 2007, 11:03:10 PM OK, so I got Firefox. how do I get notification of my AOL email?
Anyone? Is there a plug-in or summink? Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Laxie on December 04, 2007, 11:06:55 PM Not 100% positive this is what you're looking for, but it's the only reference to AOL I could find:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2114 Title: Re: Computer help Post by: RED-DOG on December 04, 2007, 11:33:04 PM Tried that Lax, it allows access to email but doesn't notify me of new mail.
Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Laxie on December 05, 2007, 12:06:33 AM Ugh...sorry. Bad beat.
Title: Re: Computer help Post by: Bongo on December 05, 2007, 03:54:01 AM Is there an updated version of the AOL software to download? Do AOL have a support email you could contact (that way you'll avoid the call center and might be able to get through to someone with the ability to fix the problem).
As for IE, you could debate the merits of closed source v open source for security and many other things, but that would probably bore the socks off everyone! :P I still hate the blasted contraption for the way it urinates all over the web standards meaning I have to make a website and then make it work in IE. I also don't think I could live without the add-ons for firefox, so many really useful tweak, tools, and features. Opera - very nice, not enough incentive for me to switch from FF though - especially with all the add ons that really help me! Safari - I have it installed, don't really use it - it's just handy for testing. Text and forms look nice though! |
