Negreanu posted over on Full Contact Poker that Chip Reese passed away today. Very sad news if true. Find it hard to belive DN would lie about this. Chip was the players player it seemed, everyone of the big game players seemed to think he was the best around and Doyle has said he was the only player to consistently get the better or him.

Various online poker sources are confirming early morning reports that Chip Reese, a legendary poker player considered by many of his peers to be the best all-around player alive, passed away in his sleep this morning. Reese was 56.

Early reports have not pinpointed a cause of death. Wicked Chops Poker noted that Reese had been recently reporting suffering vague symptoms generally associated with flu or pneumonia. Reese suffered from rheumatic fever as a child, which can cause long-term issues with the heart valves.

One of the Greatest High Stakes Cash Game Players Passes On
David “Chip” Reese, the three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, long-time cash-game star, and member of the Poker Hall of Fame, has died. He was 56.

Card Player has learned that Reese was admitted to a hospital last night with symptoms of pneumonia and passed away in his sleep.

Reese, the Ohio native who learned to play poker while attending Dartmouth, was a regular in the highest cash games and was considered the best seven-card stud player in the world. Doyle Brunson held Reese’s play in such high regard that he pegged him to pen the chapter on Stud for his book “Super System.”

He affirmed his position as one of the world’s best all-around players in 2006 when he won the $50,000 WSOP H.O.R.S.E. event ($1.785 million). He also won bracelets in 1982 and 1978 ($5,000 Limit Stud and $1,000 Stud split).

Sad news, a truly great poker player.

RIP Chip.

Very sad news - my heart goes out to those he has left behind.

Just heard this news, truly one of the games true greats.
Such a shame, I'm sure he will now get the recognision he modestly avoided but vastly deserved.

Chip was once asked if he thought some new hotshot kid was a good player or not, and Chip replied something a long the lines of, "Ask me again in thirty years." Great line from a great poker player. R.I.P.

There are good poker players, great players - and legendary players. The latter group does not contain that many names, and sadly today there is one less after the death of David “Chip” Reese. He was 56.

A quite brilliant cash game player, Reese was also a genius at the tournament tables, picking up three WSOP bracelets, including the coveted 2006 $50,000 HORSE event with it’s stunning $1.8 million first prize. The mark of quality is reflected in the fact that his first recorded big tournament win was also in the WSOP - way back in 1978 when he picked up the $1,000 Seven-Card Stud Split for a more modest $19,200.

As recently as this summer I enjoyed watching Reese playing in the WSOP Main Event while I was working in Las Vegas. His tournament never really got going that day, but the respect that other players at the table gave him was obvious.

Reese, an amiable American, had been suffering recently from the symptoms of pneumonia and died in his sleep. Recently divorced from his wife, he leaves a son, a daughter, a stepdaughter and many friends.

One of his best friends over the years was fellow poker legend Doyle Brunson. He said: “I knew him for 35 years , I never saw him get mad or raise his voice. He had the most even disposition of anyone I’ve ever met.”

Doyle added: “He’s certainly the best poker player that ever lived.”

Coming from Doyle, that is the greatest compliment Reese could have been paid.
