Title: O/T - BackGammon
Post by: Tractor on October 25, 2005, 07:34:21 PM
Can anyone recomend any websites to learn to play Backgammon ( not for money atm) ie playchips or similar?
My local poker club is having a BG tourny next month and hopefully a crash course online would get me to a level to play.
Also any recomended reading material online would be a great help.
and maybe any obvious advice that might help me.

Cheers

Pogo.com do backgammon and it has a ranking points system so you can measure your progress. Any beginners book will give you the basic strategies. It's a great game, enjoy it!

I play at www.netgammon.com

It's free to play or you can pay a memebrship of £20 a year and then you play againts other members with a league point scoring system called "ELO". The membership way is the best way to improve your game and for competition purposes.

Gammon Empire is the PartyPoker of online backgammon, you can play for money or you can play for play money. The graphics are not as good as netgammon, but Gammon Empire has many more players than any other site.

http://www.play65.com/

This is a money site just like poker

http://www.netgammon.com/

You can play very quick practice games for free against the computer here.

The one thing that would bother me playing for money online though is that the best Backgammon computer programs can play better than the best human players.

I have to disagree, the best human backgammon players have an ELO rating on Netgammon of between 2100-2400, where as GNUBG and SNOWIE computers Netgammon ELO is only around 1900-2100 mark.

And what is a typical rating for an 'averagely good' player?

I would say between 1700-1850.

I can recommend jellyfish too, and the tutorial version which a friend gave me is excellent.
