Title: Golden Compass Post by: TightEnd on December 06, 2007, 05:04:48 PM Has a PG certificate, and I have two boys keen to see it
To those who have seen it, is it suitable for children down to the age of 8 please, or not? If not, why not? (ie what led to the certificate) thank you Title: Re: Golden Compass Post by: AndrewT on December 06, 2007, 06:36:14 PM http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0385752/parentalguide (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0385752/parentalguide)

Title: Re: Golden Compass Post by: AdamM on December 06, 2007, 06:47:39 PM I'm interested in responses to this too.
I take my 7 year old to the cinema every christmas eve and was thinking of The Golden Compass this year. The trialers made me jump a couple of times, that big polar bear thing was a jumpy moment :D Title: Re: Golden Compass Post by: snoopy1239 on December 06, 2007, 06:54:49 PM Yes, it's suitable. There are a few creepy moments and the odd scrap, but nothing too disturbing. Think somewhere between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.
I thought it was mediocre by the way and a complete missed opportunity, totally devoid of character, development and the key word 'fun'. I preferred Harry Potter and Stardust. Title: Re: Golden Compass Post by: Claw75 on December 06, 2007, 06:57:03 PM have you read the book Snoops? If so, how did it compare?

Title: Re: Golden Compass Post by: snoopy1239 on December 06, 2007, 10:13:42 PM have you read the book Snoops? If so, how did it compare? No, I only read non-fiction, but I believe that having read the book shouldn't be a pre-requisite and that the film has a responsibility to stand up on its own. I have never read a Harry Potter book, but thoroughly enjoyed the film. I didn't find the Golden Compass enjoyable. The main problem I believe is that stories and angles are underdeveloped and what is supposed to be an epic journey to the North Pole, feels like a 5 minute trundle down the road. Bizarrely, if the film had been twice as long, with more attention given to the narrative and various character arcs, then I feel like I would have been sucked into the world far more easier. This is what I hear the book achieved. |
