Title: Call for value!?
Post by: NumptyITB on December 26, 2007, 09:48:03 PM
Playing at the Luton Christmas Eve Double Chance £50 freezeout..

Second level (50-100). Starting chips 2500... have approx 3000 infront, without having second stack yet.
10 seater table..

You are in second position with

 Ad Js

First to act makes it 350 to play. Firstly... do you call this? Normally i wouldnt stand a raise with an ace smaller than a queen. But, this time, partly due to the fact it was the best hand i saw for half hour, and secondly because there was a lot of loose play at our table, i decided to flat call.

Fold...Fold...Fold...

Next to act raises to 1100 total.

Next to him immediately calls.

Button pushes all in for 4000 chips.

Small blind calls.

Big blind calls.

First to act calls!

Number 1:: I must call this surely, purely because of the value in it?? I'm knowing im behind surely!?

Number 2:: Does it make a difference to you if you still have your second stack to come, whether you end up calling or not?

I called.

Your thoughts please?....

i fold in a freezeout because the chances are you're drawing dead to a straight and not only that but some of your outs for that straight are probably gone. needless to say i call though in this format mainly due to wanting to avoid any tilt that may occur if i fold and would have won!

calling the 350. Not too bad on an active table.

Once all the other action has taken place then it's an easy fold.

4 way you can more or less be gtd to be drawing dead.

after calling for the valet and getting your drink ordered

FOLD

then get up from table and take a bathroom break or a smoke so you dont know if you would of hit and dont get tilted

fold, fold, fold.

You already have 4 all ins with the original re-raiser and his caller to come. AJ isn't looking good here even with the potential for a septuple up

Fold to the 1st bet, let alone the second.

This is why I find this an easy fold to the first bet, thus avoiding the situation.

partly due to the fact it was the best hand i saw for half hour

Classic quote.

Live play, and half an hour - equates to what? 6/7 hands?

Patience.

Numpty you have a strategy. Namely "I don't call with A-J here". But you compromise that correct strategy because you haven't played any hands in a while. Any emotion that infects your decision making process should be avoided. So calling because you're tilting, bored, frustrated or impatient is no justification for calling. It is a mistake whatever way you are feeling right now. Folding DESPITE your frustration is good poker. Also because it is early in the tournament and the table is active further action was always a probability.

So the answer to the question "I have leaked some chips here already so is it ok to leak them all....especially as I have a 2nd set to come?" is No! I often find that the term calling for value is just a way to justify a bad call....and this would be a bad call.
