Title: Evacuated!
Post by: TightEnd on December 27, 2007, 02:57:33 PM
Well that was a Boxing Day night to remember!!

I'd hoped to play live last night but couldn't make it in time, having visited my brother yesterday and then dropped the kids off afterwards

So settled in for the evening. After messing around online for a while I switched the television on, keen to watch the Chelsea/Villa game on MOTD which had sounded great on the radio earlier

As I switched the television on there was an enormous bang. It sounded like my roof was coming off, as it appeared to come from upstairs! I almost jumped out of my skin and set off upstairs to investigate.....nothing seemed untoward, which I found strange.

Downstairs I looked out of my front window and saw groups of people milling about....curious I stepped outside the front door and looked right...........

I was looking at a huge fire, black acrid smoke billowing into the night air..from a vehicle yard maybe 200 metres from my house, normally hidden by tall conifers which themselves were now ablaze.

This was not good news, as I know the yard contains tanks of fuel and canisters of all sorts of stuff from Calor gas through paint for respraying cars...

So.....soon the fire brigade arrive, we all go inside and they work to control the blaze and at 1am (fire out, but smoke still billowing) everyone on four or five local roads, mine included, are informed by the police that we are to be evacuated to the local leisure centre gym for the night whilst they conduct toxicity tests...

Off we trot, and we're looked after fine. So that's what a gym looks like?!?!?

Allowed back home this morning (though the people in the two nearest roads aren't) but not allowed to drive into my road or out of it (only one way in and out), so thats today's plans gone

Decision at 11pm tonight as to whether to open the road-block.

Hope so, as my son is playing for his representative football team (Bedfordshire FA U11s no less lol) tomorrow morning, and I am the taxi!!

The wpc "manning" the patrol car at the turn off to Road Tighty is cute, three cups of tea later I have just now recieved my first smile....

Part of me wants the roadblock to stay.... ;D

They should never accept food from the public - you can never be sure what they have done to it.....one case at Luton of someone putting drugs in a biscuit - one very happy pc who was still happy whilst being reprimanded by the on duty inspector. Apparently on the way back to the station he had to keep stopping for  ;popcorn; because he had the munchies.  rotflmfao

keep supplying the cups of tea Tighty, you never know when you'll benefit. back in the day I used to run a couple of petrol stations in the Kent countryside and as we were the only place open at night for many miles police would pop in and we'd make them cups of tea. not only did it mean we got a very prompt service when needed but also on the numerous occasions I'd get pulled over for driving in the way that young people tend to drive I'd get let off with nothing more than a wave and a smile.

I'd sent a stern email to parceline and got an automated 'emergency evacuation' reply.  Thought they were looking for an excuse to avoid me since they still have a Christmas package I'd ordered.  After hearing your tale, I guess I'll have to give them a break...even if the gifts are broke.  Ah well.  Glad you're ok.
