The only comment that's needed I think. Title: Re: I swear it's true Post by: AndrewT on December 30, 2007, 12:32:52 AM People are used to paying the amount indicated on an item. However, when they have a half price sale, Boots are too f--king lazy to actually mark the stuff down. They leave the original price on there and just leave the customer to work out how much it actually costs now.
The funny thing is not that they have these idiot guides out, but that the idiot guides only have the 'easy' prices listed. Boots will have items which are marked as being £15 or £25 and some customers will not know how much half of that is. They'll look at the guides, it won't tell them, and they will be too embarrassed to approach a member of staff for assistance, so simply won't buy the item. There are circles of irony and despair here which tear at the heart of British society. I went into Virgin on the ground floor, had a look around and then left through the upper level. a bit later I decided to go back to get something I'd seen earlier but couldn't find Virgin anywhere but kept walking past this Zavvi that I'd never heard of. I believe that they deliberately rebranded the 1st floor but not the ground just to confuse me. It was a management buyout by the Virgin Megastore bosses - they're now independent. Branson's no fool though - he knows high-street CD and DVD selling is a dead duck and so was desperate to flog it before everyone cottoned on to that. Title: Re: I swear it's true Post by: thetank on December 30, 2007, 06:02:56 PM Dyscalculia is a condition that makes it difficult to learn and/or comprehend mathematical functions.
It can show itself when people have damaged certain parts of their brain. It can also appear in children as a genetically-linked learning disability. It can be treated in a similar way to dyslexia, by using a different approach to teaching. Not as well known as dsylexia though, it is often missed and kids who don't raise their hand in maths class become adults who secretely count on fingers. It occurs in people across the whole IQ range, sufferers of dyscalculia are often more than proficient in other areas. It is thought to affect up to 5% of the population to some degree. Symptoms can be as striking as an inability of telling which of two numbers is the larger. Having difficulty working out what is half of £25 is not uncommon. Not wanting to spoil, anyones fun by ranting how you're making fun of the disabled (yawn) It's just an area I'm interested in (my ambition is to go back to University, get a degree, and become a teacher of mathematics) and it's a subject not otherwise likely to come up on a poker forum. Title: Re: I swear it's true Post by: RED-DOG on December 30, 2007, 06:09:17 PM I thought Dyscalculia was Vlad the Impailer's sister.

It's true that up to 5% of the population could suffer from dyscalculia, but I'm sure they'd understand that we're only making fun of the remaining 50% of the population who aren't able to work out 50% off.
