How about a garden path? I've never heard anyone call that a garden pathway. Well, maybe the Queen does?

Okay, for those that are thrown by the lack of -way, how about this instead:

Bath (Barth) or Bath (Baff) - the city of Bath Spa.

and

bath (barth) or bath (baff) - the place you have a wash.

I think the accepted rule of thumb is that if you have a job you pronounce it with an 'r' in it.

You should see Bristol. More chavs and chavettes per square mile than any other place on Earth apparently :) Still love the place though :)

shower as if you get the right head on it can dissipate more than just H2O

path

bath

No 'ff' at the end, and no 'ar' in the middle.  How it's supposed to be pronounced.

That's pretty much what I was thinking.

Although as with foreign languages then local pronunciation always takes precedent, so the place Bath would be pronounced Barth because that's what I think the locals call it, although I would defer to anybody with greater knowledge if the local pronunciation is something else.

Newcastle and Castleford are two place names that should NEVER be pronounced with a long 'arr' sound.

Which fits in with my practice of pronouncing it like the locals do.

Aye, but do you also say "Brizzle" (Bristol) and "Auld Landan Town" (London)?

p.s. how do you write the London version of Landan Town (can't work out how to write how the Town bit should be pronounced...)

Does that work for foreign cities, for example, Tokyo?

Yes - in theory, but I won't in practice because people might give me funny looks.

Also, on a related theme, if I said I was going to Abertawe for example then many people I know wouldn't where I was talking about.

Direct.

Dai-rect (British English and correct)

D'rrect (Yankee and incorrect)

Direct Line have started pronouncing it D'rrect in their adverts - why?  Don't know if they're cheaper for insurance, but it makes me not want to use them - and for that reason, I'm out.

My too favourite American-pronounced words are alluminium (alluminum) and oregano. (or-egano).

Just to annoy everyone I always pronounce those two words in that manner. Get corrected every single time - "don't you mean Aluminium?". But then, that's why I do it I guess lol ;)

I also like the way "New Orleans" is pronounced - as in "Noo Orlands".

The Americans don't mis-pronounce Aluminium, they mis-spell it.
