"Current Affairs BBC commissioners have asked us to pitch for a documentary slot on BBC3 on the theme of money and wealth: what would you do for money?  What does money do to you?  BBC3 audience skews quite young, and so we really wanted to explore the phenomenon of young Poker players and how many have assumed big amounts of money playing it. 

 The documentary would seek to explore a game that has been made accessible, and acceptable, by the internet, making it possible for young people to earn large amounts of money in relatively short amounts of time – we want to explore how do they feel about their money; what it’s enabled them to do; and if they feel they’ve worked for their cash; the documentary would explore the relationship between money, young people and the game – is it the money that drives them or the love of it?   And is it a sustainable livelihood in the long term?   

 I really just want to get an insight into the game from a young person’s point of view by having an informal chat.  I’d be so grateful if you could put me in touch with some successful young poker players.  I wondered is there is any other authority on the game who might be good to talk to and give me an insight into the world of Poker"

the one prob with 90% of these things is they actually want summat different so its better to be very careful if you put yourself forward.

Sounds like a good programme, as long as they don't go the poker addiction/poker is bad route. I'd suggest players like Jeff Kimber, Jen Mason, Dan Carter, Ben Vinson...

I seriously doubt that a documentary on BBC3 would seek to be exploitative.

Thats the prob Andrew, neither did I when Bad Girl and  I were asked to do an interview for the BBC about women in poker. We were told they wanted to highlight a success story and the first question was' so when you are roaming around the word playing poker who looks after the kids and do you think its is good for them'

They then got a bit annoyed when we stopped it and told em to politely do one.

I suppose I just about fit into this category but im not interested to be honest.

My concern among many others (I like my privacy i suppose) is that my words/life would be twisted, even though its the bbc. Panorama did a documentary about online gambling inc a bit on a young internet pro (true on 2p2 i believe) and it appears they were a bit creative with his story.

If it's from one "Jessica Carey", then I've already had her on the 'phone, for over an hour, & in lengthly e-Mails, yesterday, & now she's chased me 3 times already today....Not for me, like, but to provide her with details of these young players.

Her e-Mail asked questions like this.....

I just wanted to confirm when the 2008 World Poker Series starts, and am I right in thinking the games that go on weekly and monthly in the country are for cash and not necessarily part of a tournament.  Can you win big money in these games, or is it at the Casinos and tournaments that you can win big?  Do most players just win small amounts but play often and therefore up their winnings in this way?

And then, an hour after she sent it, she's chasing me for the anwsers...to questions which are not exactly the easiest to answer, as she plainly knows as much about Poker as Ironside.

On her THIRD 'phone call to me today, after I explained to her carefully yesterday that I was working last night, & yet she rung me at 9am today, she informed me she is working to a tight deadline. My suggestion that maybe, then, she shouild have raised the questions a little sooner met with no response.

There's a guy out in the Bahamas at the moment who posted a funny story yesterday. As Snoopy and Floppy found out, the PCA is essentially full of Young Internet Pros from the US who spend all their time in their bedrooms playing poker and making a fair bit of money, but who don't go out to spend it much. One YIP was having dinner at a restaurant whilst drunk. The toilets were outside the restaurant in the mall complex and he had to walk past a few shops to get to them.

As he's walking, he passes a jewellers with watches in the window. As he's drunk he decides that what he needs more than anything in the world right now is a new watch. He likes the look of one with a diamond bezel which is $10K - the shop assistant says she'll do a special deal for $7700 if he buys it now. He thinks this is a bargain and takes $20K out of his pocket, hands it to the assistant and asks her to count out the $7700 as he's 'too drunk to count'.

Transaction successfully completed, he goes back to dinner and shows off his new watch, playing with the bezel. As he leaves the restaurant he checks the time and notices his watch has no diamonds anymore. He runs back into the restaurant and finds the diamond bezel on his seat - it had fallen off. By the next morning, the watch had managed to already run 4 and a half hours slow. Once he sobers up he decides he's going to try and get his money back. :)

This strongly suggests to me that they already have virtually the whole programme made - including it's conclusions (poker is bad) and now they just want to fill in a few cut away scenes to make it look like they've made an effort to to do any investigation to back up their claims.

My second thought is:  rotflmfao at the thought of Indestructable trying to pass for a 'young poker player' when he hears of it.
