when i first started playing poker, I saw peeps telling other peeps to stop talking about bad beat stories. This seemed a bit strange to me since I did not and still dont get bored of hearing them. Anyways, I think now that it ain't just bad beat stories, a lot of the time I hear peeps telling other peeps to stop telling poker stories full stop. This seemed weird to me. It was a poker club. Peeps went along and were told to stop talking about poker. 'Don't tell me your poker stories, don't tell me what you think about poker personalities, or how you did online'. Instead of talking about other things instead, the people I see playing mostly just sit around silent and save the chit chat for arguments about angleshooting. Sad, really.
Why would people have such a problem with chit chat about the thing that brought them together in the first place?

maybe I should give my recent example: two friends of mine in a recent big buy in tournament. One busted out and came to my table, dejected. 'How did you get on?' our friend asked him, we were wondering why he busted early
'Well, I raised pre with AKs, was reraised by the big blind, I pushed

'Stop, we don't wanna hear it' said some random at the table, who wasn't even being addressed'
My mate kind of gave him this 'you werent being spoken to look', and carried on.
'If you want to talk poker, wait til the end'

This seems to me pretty rude, what's wrong with someone taking an interest in the details of someone's demise. Since it matters to the victim, it matters to his friend.
I see this quite a lot now.

Because it is boring in the extreme.

If I have just concentrated for 2 hours on a game of poker, the last thing I want to hear when I get ten minutes break is how someone played AK.

Tell me about your kids, or your job, or your football team.............................

Half the people you tell about bad beats dont care & the other half are glad :) ;)

ok if I bump into a stranger at a bar after a game, and start babbling about my bust-out, I can see how it is not interesting. He has probably seen the same setup that busted me. Why would he want to hear it again? But if it's for a lot of money, and someone wants it out of their system, I don't mind my friend mentioning it to me, and I will listen with (maybe slightly feigned) interest. Afterall, when his gran was sick in hospital, I listened, not out of interest (I've never met her), but because it mattered to HIM. Thus......I think it's out of order for a third party to try to stop this discussion between friends.

Though, i agree that the stranger at the table should have kept quiet.

Yes I didn't come across very well.
The example at the table is fine, and the other person was out of order to interrupt.

But the first post was making the point about hand accounts in general, for which I have a very low tolerance level!!

I think that talking about the hand you got busted on or lost half your stack with is ok as long as you keep it short.

For example "I was getting blinded away and pushed with AK and it didn't hold up"
or "my trips got busted by a straight on the river".

Anyone who has played a lot of poker has had every kind of bad beat there is so it can get repetitive to hear other peoples, but if you keep it short then most people wont have a problem.

Also never have a go at someone who has just delivered a bad beat upon you as you don't want to encourage them to play any better do you.

Yes, i agree, bad beat stories are ok if they last about two sentences maximum. When someone corners me and I can't get away without being rude, I just switch off and nod my head then go "oooh unlulcky" at the end. The thing is, when you play poker you have to accept the gambling element. Bad beats are best forgotten within 5 minutes because they are unavoidable... I lose a lot more sleep over the mistakes I make in cards (which is absolutely loads, lol), not bad luck.

I'm not particularly a fan of bad beat stories, but the trouble is, people generally want to tell you them.  If it's someone you know well, then you're 99% of the time not going to get them, but if it's someone you hardly know, you just know a beat story is coming.

The worst bit of them is that it's not generally a conversation starter unless you want to trade beats.  The only response that you can give generally is "oh, unlucky"

I go with the "sucks, don't it" response
