Title: Is it possible to get cheap last minute deals to Vegas?
Post by: SQ on October 28, 2005, 09:52:03 AM
Any advice on getting really cheap last minute deals to Vegas?

I'm off work next week so would like to go over. I'm totally flexible on flight times. Had a quick search on the net but can't find any cheap deals.

I've just been through all this myself. Flights no chance, get more expensive nearer the time. However, hotel deals can be found. I recommend looking at expedia, ebooker and travelocity, make sure you check all three as there are different deals on each site. I'm going myself in a few weeks and I manged to get a deal at the imperial palace for a week for £170, there are much cheaper places than this even but all considered (location, quality of hotel etc) this was a decent deal. You can stay in some of the downtown hotels for about £15 a night, I'm sure you get what you pay for though.

Try

http://www.airline-network.co.uk

for flights. £340 from Gatwick to Vegas on 1st November, returning a week later.

For hotels, definitely shop around the big online websites, but also check the hotel websites directly - and don't forget the $20 trick when you get there  ;)

I did a trip at 2 weeks notice once - it is doable, do a search for Airline Network on google UK and they get cheap flights.

Be aware that if you are going over a weekend the rates skyrocket.

If you have been before and have a players card at a hotel, ring them and try and get poker rate on a room, or even a comp, at worst they will offer you casino rate. They don't mind asking, and if you don't ask you don't get.

When I went with two weeks notice, I bagged flights for about 450 quid and got my room comped so didn't pay for it.

Sleep on the flights, and just have fun while you are there :)

In the late 90's I recall catching a charter from Manchester to Vegas (I think it was a british airtours flight) that lasted 3 weeks and cost me £121.

I remmeber getting the train from London to Manchester the night before as I hated the thought of flying to Vegas via Los Angeles as this was in the days before the direct Virgin Flight from Gtawick.

I think BMI also have a flight to Vegas that is direct too.

Not sure if this helps but the Vegas route is a very popular one and thats why the flights are so expensive.

What is the $20 trick ?

The $20 trick is, you book the most basic room in the hotel, for the cheapest price you can get online.

Then on arrival at reception - either the hotel itself or McCarran airport for some hotels - when asked to present your credit card, you hand over credit card plus $20 along with a big smile and a line such as 'I'm REALLY looking forward to staying in your hotel, I've heard you have some GREAT rooms'

There's no guarantee it will work, but it's worth a try. The wife and I spent five nights at Paris, and for an extra $20 got a big corner room with a view directly across to the Bellagio fountains.

A lot probably depends on the hotel you are staying in, and how busy it is. The best place to get up-to-date info is the alt.vacation.las-vegas newsgroup.

BMI are really good direct from Manchester.

Make sure you know the addy of a place if you are going to book when you get out there, immigration will not allow you to enter on their visa waiver scheme unless you have adress for your first night's stay.

Also make sure there isn't a big convention on - or else you aren't going to get a room :)

I remember seeing someone at ATlanta while I was waiting for a connecting flight to Vegas .. they were ringing every hotel they could find in vegas and they still couldn't find a palce to stay.

www.lasvegastalk.com is a great resource.

If you are there to gamble, ie not with "significant other" to see shows sightsee etc, downtown is ridicolusly cheap and mostly safe. stayed at Lady Luck for WSOP 2004 and paid equivilent of £10 per night, got use of pool, gym and a nice double room. Food was s*** tho so went to Golden Nugget for breakfast buffet which I'd recommend. Bus ticket from transport authority $30 for max 30 days and get express bus to strip. It misses most stops as an express service and boom you are on strip in 15 minutes, ready to gamble!

I always stay Downtown Simon - it's far better in terms of gambling, value and atmosphere.

A cab to Bellagio is 20 bucks with tip (tip ask for north valet entrance - much closer to the poker room - Mr Wynn knows a thing or two about poker players).

The Plaza is a top place to play poker as well - very good dealers, nice comps and the chance to learn to play Pan :)

I'm off to Vegas in December and can't wait.

Any tips for the best poker room to use? Previously I've stayed at the Luxor and used their room which is fairly friendly. I've been playing online for 6 months but live play has been restricted to a couple of Vegas trips.

The Luxor is OK if you play a lot, get a players card and you can pick up a few $ from the frequent player freerolls and prize draws. I liked their 10 am trnys tho they are very fast you just need to adjust. My favourite cardroom though was off strip, The Orleans. Some nice games, non smoking and good trnys twice a day.

Thanks Simon, I'll check out the Orleans then.

Internal flights are cheap in the U.S., so if u can get a good deal to somewhere stateside, that would be half the battle!!

I'm going in July (yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss!) for the WSOP. Got to Phoenix using my BA airmiles and then a real cheap deal (£100 each for me and better half)!! Really can't wait! :D :D 8)

for hotels, you can get a good deal by just turning up.  There is a booking place on the edge of the strip that will get you a last minute deal.  We (the missus and I) got booked in at the Hilton for $40 per night a bit back.

Bit risky I guess flying in to do that but if you're brave enough for it, worth a shot!
