Title: No Country For Old Men
Post by: Mango99 on January 10, 2008, 02:32:34 PM
Has anyone seen the Coen brothers latest? I saw this last night and thought it was a stunning film. An incredible performance by Javier Bardem, and surely one that will win him the oscar this year?

You can catch it on advance previews some places. It looks like it gets a bigger release on 12th Jan, then goes general release on 18th.

Coen brothers FTW. Simply amazing.

Great if you like that sort of thing.

I do.

Takes a while to get into it.

VERY slow and dull at times, Tarantinoesque at others, storyline has been done hundreds of times before though mostly more believably.
Lead actor could've been Keanu Reeves tussauds dummy.
I found it ok, knowhere near as good as i expected based on the reviews.

Found this on IMDB:

"Heath Ledger had been in talks to play Llewelyn Moss, but withdrew to take "some time off" instead."

1st half great...very poor ending but snobs call it "art", 3/5 overrated.

The ending is faithful to Cormac McCarthy's novel on which its based

Would have been all too easy to go Hollywood but credit to the Coen's for defying convention.

Snob, Out.

Brilliant film - Touching The Big L or Millers Crossing as the best Coen brothers film IMO.

Did the end really need more?

Ummm Fargo a funny film for me - love it, original well written stuff, as a cinema specticale it is the nuts.

However I can't say I am motivated to pick it off the shelf to watch it again too often, maybe its just a film that will never be as good as the first time you see it? or truly needs the big screen?  who knows, for me a great film but I have to say not a top 3 Coen film IMO.

Totally agree with you. I thought it was excellent all the way through, and especially the ending infact. That made the film a classic imo.
