If a person applies for a Job and they are the best candidate, then regardless of ability/disability they should get the position, IMO. Nothing to do with the Government, or it shouldn't be

yeh i know and agree with you Taximan, however i am sure that there are targets for companies to achieve for recruiting ppl with disabilities to ensure no one can get away with being biased against those who are not able bodied. I could be wrong i hope someone can help me.

I don't know about targets or percentages for employment, but my employers have the two ticks thing - 'positive about disabled people'.  Where a disabled person applies for a job, as long as they meet the minimum essential criteria of the post, they are guaranteed an interview (but not a job - it's a level playing field from interview stage).

Yup the disability discrimination act (DDA) protects people and ensures they are not discriminated against. From there it's as Claire says, you need to be the best person for the job. There is a way you can positively discriminate when you recruit to a post. Say you are recruiting someone to work in a shelter for women who have been abused, you can get permission to advertise for a woman to fill the post if you have good rationale. There may be other areas of postive discrimination and I'll ask my head of HR tomorrow for you. There are no targets I am aware of and I'm pretty clued up on national policy.  Why are you asking?

I am presenting for a job tomorrow and i got the presentation spec at the very last moment, so my research is a wee bit ropey, I have had to steer away from hard figures, better to say you dont know than look like an arse and lie.

Just need to finish the power point and hand outs and start practicing and i should be all set.

no sleep tonight lol
