Your correspondent understands from a source close to the dressing room though that a major stumbling block in negotiations with Cahill was the presence of a voucher system for meals at the training ground.

"I walked to training at Villa every day, having looked down the sides of my sofa for all the spare change I could find. I bought a voucher from Gladys on reception that entitled me to first sitting of lunch, chicken and pasta. I was shocked to find that instead I was on second sitting, with the apprentices, and John Carew had eaten my chicken. I was left with a Spicy Pot Noodle and Gladys had gone on holiday to Spain.
