Does anyone know the best way to get a true value on a domain name?
I have one which i think is worth quite a reasonable amount of money to the right person and they have contacted me about purchasing the domain name.
Should i go to a company to do this or can i basically just barter with them?
I have sold a few through sedo before but this wasnt really for sale but they have contacted me via email.
Can i sell it myself or do i have to use a broker???

Any help/advice mucho appreciated.

I think my only personal advice would be to definitely do your research before your sell, get a few people to value it. ;)

You can get domain names appraised by some companies.   Sedo offer the service, you obviously have to pay, but it will give you an idea on the true cost.  Some sites that offer a free service don't give an accurate reflection, they bump the price up and say it's worth thousands when it's not necessarily worth that much.

You could ask on http://forums.digitalpoint.com/  I think there's an appraisal forum there where you post and people give their opinions (they are pretty good, it's not just some randoms offering opinions)

A domain is worth what someone wants to pay for it.

If someone has approached you, that means they obviously want it.  Have they made an offer, or have they asked you for a price?  Get them to make an offer first and then you can start the haggling process.

Is it for a company or an individual.  If it's blatantly for commercial use, you can try and get as much out of them as you feel is right.  If it's an individual who isn't using it for commercial purposes (which is probably unlikely), you aren't going to get too much from them and should set your sights lower.

You don't have to go through a third-party to sell it.  But definitely make sure you get the funds cleared before transferring the domain to the buyer.  If necessary, use an escrow service.

Is it a generic name or one that is, or sounds similar to, a company name? If the latter, be very very careful; companies use this trick of asking for a price as the first stage in taking it off you in a trade name dispute.
If the former, it's like selling anything else - barter until you've got a price you're both happy with. If you aren't happy, don't sell it, simple as.

The person asking about it is from reseller (i think).
Im not sure if i can mention the name on here or not?
So i wont at the moment, but the domain name is a name of a rapper/reggae person although i doubt it would be him buying it off me and its .com which i believe would be the most sort after.
I think im going to get SEDO to value it first and go from there.

If you work on the site a bit and get it promoted well so it's appearing for searches for dopeboy, you can probably sell the site for a nice amount rather than just the domain name.  Need to get it making a bit in Adsense revenue

yeah I was thinking about doing that, it gets a lot of traffic anyway without any search engines as people seem to just type it in directly.

You might want to be careful if you do that though, myspace.co.uk was recently awarded to myspace.com, despite the fact the .co.uik domain was registered before the .com.

The reason was they put targeted ads on there and that was seen as them taking advantage of the myspace.com name.
