Title: Re: Daylight Robbery! Post by: suzanne on February 12, 2008, 02:24:33 AM £65 per half hour plus vat plus parts i was told today :-(
Is that reasonable? Im talking about in a wee village in Scotland btw Title: Re: Daylight Robbery! Post by: cia260895 on February 12, 2008, 09:23:37 AM ....and a plumber charges how much per hour ;whistle; ;) My day rate for site management is £220 a day But if people want me to get my tools out in the evenings or weekends then i'll charge £400 per day or £200 for a evenings work obviously if its just a tap washer or similar i prob wouldnt charge unless they were filthy rich.Extorniate you may say but my free time is precious and and ill always let people know in advance how much i charge and tell them i'm not cheap. I once had an old bloke who wanted a tap washer changed and he tried to give me £300 for doing it<he really wasnt with it and there is no way i could take it, Friend and family get it done for free though Title: Re: Daylight Robbery! No not at all being self employed i charge what i want to, as I dont have anybody to answer to,and if i decide to do something for e.g an old lady on a pension for nothing then that is my right. Title: Re: Daylight Robbery! Post by: cia260895 on February 12, 2008, 10:59:12 PM I suppose its more economical to employ people from outside of london,so with hindsight sems like a good idea.

Title: Re: Daylight Robbery! Post by: suzanne on February 13, 2008, 02:25:20 AM What a nightmare 2 days I have had trying to find a bloody plumber for my sister.
She phoned me up over the weekend in tears...water had been gushing out from the stopcock in the bathroom so she had shut it off but had no water in the house and even filling the cistern meant flooding the floor. Her boiler had also packed up but since she had no water it didnt matter. She finally confessed that she had been living like this for over a month but didnt have the money to get it fixed. Monday morning first thing im on the phone..24hr no callout charge responce in 1 hour PERFECT!! I am told someone will be there within the hour but its £65 callout charge (the ad said free quote) but ok..whatever..just fix it. So sis has taken the day off work...she waits and waits...I phone again at mid day...he will be there between 1 and 3pm. I get a phone call from sis at 4pm hes still not there. I phone again and lady says I will ring the plumber and phone you back...she didnt...I ring again just before 5pm...OHHH there was a mix up and he cant come today but he will be there 9am and sooooooo sorry we will give you a 10% discount. Next morning..im sorry he cant make it early it will be between 1 - 3 pm...OK.. I tell sis who is well worked up by now...nearly 2pm I get a call saying very sorry but plumber has just faxed us saying he has cancelled all jobs!!!! Ok so what time tomorrow I say? Sorry but we have to cancel the job as he is the only plumber on our books in that area. So my poor sister took 2 days off work waiting for these plonkers...can she claim her wages back? Any advise coz im bloody fuming. Title: Re: Daylight Robbery! Post by: cia260895 on February 13, 2008, 11:18:58 AM Unfortunatley i am afraid there is nothing you can do,You might have stood some sort of chance if you had signed a contract specifiying Cost and times but they aren't normally done in domestic situations,This is what gives Plumbers a bad name and just adds to the frustration and cost of everything, especially hard on single mums who have to take time off to be there.
I wouldnt advise any one to get a call out plumber at any point,The hourly charges are extorniatea nd normally shoddy workmanship,What i'd advise all to do is take the time to look at your system and identify all the valves on the system and there functions especially the incoming mains stopcock,in the event of any major leaks then turn the Main stopcock off and open all taps, if it's on the heating it will stop draining eventually if you have turned the stopcock off (also regulary shut off the valves and back on again so that if you do need to turn them off in a hurry you know that they work) Try to get a local plumber to give you a quote for a new bathroom or heating system (even if your not going to get 1 done) then ask him if you needed him in an emergency could you call him. P.S allways offer tea or coffee Title: Re: Daylight Robbery!
