Post by: Longy on February 18, 2008, 11:04:37 PM
Right this is far from standard for me, im definitley from the school "I will just play solid and let these idiots give me their money" but maybe cos im running bad. I started experimenting with some non-standard play.

Hand 1 Villain is quite solid and appears to 3 bet alot (16/12/3) . I as usual im attacking the blinds with postion.

i think you are more than likely going to get away with the first one

but the 2nd one your getting called

firing the 3rd bullet is something that i keep trying i have about a 75% success rate with it at present live

you have to pick your oppo though you need someone that is capable of folding

and you dont want to find yourself against someone that will call you down the streets to check raise you on river

whats with the bet sizing? river bet is $25 on hand 1 and $42 on hand 2.... any specific reason for that?

Erm in hand 2 i believe villain only has that back on the river and thought rightly or wrongly that betting anything else would look weird.

ok

in hand 1, u can get away with betting less on the river, your only hope to win the pot is to dislodge a bigger draw from the pot, no made hand better then urs will play the flop/turn like that and then fold the river, but they dont defend their missed draws very often, so u can bet like $12 or $13, and the result will be pretty much the same as if u bet $25.

hand 2.. the texture of the board is a lot different to hand 1, so theoretically u got more chance of getting better hands to fold, but I hate trying to get shortstacks to fold after they put in 1/3 or so of their stack in the middle, so I guess the advice for hand 1 applies to hand 2 as well, bet small, or just check it back, he aint folding a pair... .I'd prolly just check the river here, as your hand still has showdown value, in that if he has Q or K high flush draw, that paired up,  he aint folding, so of all the draws that beat you, the only one u can fold out is A/x spades, and maybe 7/x spades, and most pairs that get to the river like this are likely to make a stubborn call.

Hand 1 works a lot, but you can probably bet less and  get the same result. Busted draws are folding anyway right?

Hand 2 is more complex and if im villains shoes im calling you on that river a lot. You are repping a big hand and unless you have KK/QQ i think ur bet stinks. Less is sometimes more methinks. JJ/1010/99 check here afterall. Big spade draws just hit a Q/K a bunch of the time.

Yep that makes a lot of sense to me, cheers. Problem i have is rarely make my value bets that small, should I? Does it even matter at small stakes?

Again makes alot sense Alex,ta. In hand 2 i think im repping alot more than just kk/qq my open range from the cutoff is quite wide. Im repping any set,2 pair (not that there are many of them), also aa and against this particular villian im value shoving alot of kx hands.

not really.. people play missed draws very straightforward. If they hit, they shovel money in the pot, and if they miss, they give up. Its not like your bet size will typically induce them to make an action that they otherwise wouldn't make. ie, a bluff raise. The whole point of randomisation is to make yourself less exploitable, but if you are playing people that dont/cant exploit you, then the optimal play is defo to play straight up.

as for hand 2, it dont matter what you are representing, short stacks at 50/1 dont care what you might have... they just look for reasons to call, and if they get to the river with a made hand, they have usually figured out a reason to call.
