Title: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen Day 1b - Interactive
Post by: danafish on February 20, 2008, 11:53:13 AM
Welcome back for Day 1b at the Copenhagen Casino! I have a head cold and am currently situated under a duvet at the Comfort Hotel, drinking one of those funny water-soluble orange-flavoured vitamin cocktails and waiting for Jen to bring me coffee from the lobby, but come 2pm we will be all bright and chirpy down at the Radisson, ready to update levels 1 through 8 in a weird Groundhog Day kind of way.

Familiar faces expected today include the Rutter, Andy Black, Roy Brindley, Liam Flood, Marc Goodwin, Tony G, Jeff The Jaffacake Kimber, Steve Jelinek; in fact, all of the people in this here list which Taximan alphabetized for us, thanks very much.

Work?..They don't pay me enough to work..or maybe they don't pay me much because I don't do any work?...hmm...bit of a vicious circle there, me thinks.

The melodious voice of big T.K. rings out... "Tournament players, the doors are now open."  This is not some kind of metaphor - they're slowly moving from the ever-popular corridor into the tournament area where soon some cards are going to be in the air.  Any minute.

And the cards have indeed made it into the air and probably back down to the felt already by now. We're off to find some entertaining stories...

How about another selection of some interesting looking tables?

Katja Thater
Peter Hendriks
Søren Kongsgaard
Cristiano Blanco
Almira Skripchenko
Johannes Korsar
Joris Jaspers
Haward Speer
Stuart Rutter

Bjørn Agertved
Jens Laurbjerg Nielsen
Jonathan Cirilli
William Thorson
Nicolas Levi
Micke Norinder
Paul Testud
Miikka Samuli Mustonen
Rifat Palevic
Tony G Gouga

Plus all the excitement of a combined Andy Black, Roland de Wolfe, Marc Goodwin, Jeff Kimber and Liam Flood, making today nearly 65% more UK-tastic.

I could waste virtual ink ranting about how much internet connection error messages make me want to hit the journalist who happens to be sitting next to me (who happens to be Mike Lacey) but I won't.  I've simply stretched a cable from a box and am now sitting between two rows of tables fuming like petrol.

*****************whine over*****************

Back to the tournament, and I snapped these guys - all Dana's picks:

Kristian Pedersen (next to Liam Flood who looks surprised about it)

Frederik Hostrup-Pedersen (too cool to sit down)

Dan Pedersen - Fashionably late i.e. not here yet

SO I have substituted Rehne Pedersen for her - a formidable Pedersen indeed.

Any updates on Stephen Devlin (aka allinstevie) would be appreciated :)

I think this is your man - left the redeye on this photo as it makes him look more intimidating and less sleepy.  He is also a very very longshot to win Hoody of the Day.  In fact, he doesn't have a chance.  Dana has your winner coming right up.

Yes indeedy, hoodie of the day is very special and will be with you shortly, it's just a-loading right now.

In the meantime, BRITWATCH and we're down a man already.

Somehow finding himself down to 1200, Marc Goodwin shoved to a raise from the below gentleman, one Uffe Holm of Denmark. Mr Holm apparently lost some sort of wager, and as a result will be known for the rest of this EPT as Elephant Man. Hard luck, Mr Holm. But also hard luck Mr Goodwin - racing his pocket Sixes against Elephant Man's K-J, a King on the flop meant that raising with K-J offsuit and subsequently calling the shove paid off for Elephant Man. Tusk, tusk.

Sorry, ivory'll bad headache now.

How very curious. You are not alone though, Roland De Wolfe is also apparently not playing in spite of all the available paperwork claiming to the contrary. We will hopefully have the final, truthful player list soon.

Maybe they would...

Just a few, mind.

Steve Jelinek - 7,300
Josh Gould - 10,000 on the nose
Elephant Man - just 2,875 somehow, in spite of knocking out Marc Goodwin
Jan Sjavik - 10,400
Arnaud Mattern - 5,125
Jeff Kimber - 17,200
Roy Brindley - 3,050
Tony G - apparently OUT

This gent, awesomely named Charles Furey like out of a 70's punk band (Dana thought Porn Star/Action Hero) is your early chip leader with almost 30,000.  That's pretty good going.  Honestly this photo represents the largest proportion of his face I could snap as he seems to spend most of his time looking downwards intensely.  Pretty cool Escher-y hoody too - but you can't win more than one blonde title per day, it just wouldn't be fair.

OK how about a hand?

None other than Tom McEvoy is involved here - for those that don't recognise him he's the distinguished-looking white haired gentleman on the leftish of this picture, sporting Team Pokerstars gear today.

He re-raised preflop on the button to 1,000 after Nedin Musa had initially shown interest... but when it got back to Musa he upped it to 3,000.  A pretty swift call from McEvoy later and they were looking at a flop of 3h 5c 4s.  Musa bet out 5k and McEvoy passed sharpish.  Then Peter Hedlund - the blurry guy in blue - resumed talking (he'd briefly paused during the hand and to drink some beer) saying, "I should have pushed!  Flopped a set!"  before continuing to drink beer and talk a lot.

Arnaud Mattern is also on that table in seat 5 (you can just make out an ear and a bit of brown T-shirt) so I've added a pic of him for no particular reason.  Musa is the guy on the left, here though.

I have to say, it's a bit slooooow and a bit not much fuuuuuunnn out there. By which I don't mean everyone's in a terrible mood and there's a bad atmosphere. Everybody seems fairly content. It's just, nobody seems to be talking, or otherwise interacting, or having a good time. Take this hand from Table Rutter, for example.

There's a flop - 5d 5s 7c

Joris Jaspers doesn't do anything for a little while. Nobody speaks. Then he bets 1000.

There's a pause. Not a pregnant pause, more a pause of polite contemplation. Then Cristiano (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=512) Blanco (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=512) raises to 2200.

Everyone looks at the felt. Then, after a decent interval, Johannes Korsar calls. Eventually Joris Jaspers passes.

The dealer waits until he's absolutely certain that everyone has acted, and then deals the 8s turn. Both remaining players ponder this for a moment, and then check.

Now the dealer carefully places the 2h river in its proper place next to the turn card. Blanco thinks about it. He checks. Korsar is now not sure what to do. He considers his next move, in silence. Everyone waits patiently. Finally, he decides his move. He bets 2500.

Now the action is on Blanco again. He doesn't know what to do. He looks down at the felt. He licks his lips, and apparently counts to somewhere in the region of 40 or 50 before he acts. He silently passes.

GAHHHHH!

By the way, the Rutter has a dirty stack, like so:

But he assures me that he has 11.5k, and is happy, like so:

French Counts:

Arnaud Mattern - 4,525
Renaud of Dammartin (aka Raynald I)- no show
Paul Testud - 8,600
Nicolas Levi - 27,000 He seems to have taken all of France's luck today and spun it into some nice chip towers (I especially like his hoard of green 25 chips).

Here pictured are the four middle seats on what looks to be a pretty tough table: William Thorson, Nicolas, Mikke Norinder and Paul Testud.

Renaud of Dammartin (aka Raynald I)- no show
Paul (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=863) Testud (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=863) - 8,600
Nicolas (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=675) Levi (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=675) - 27,000 He seems to have taken all of France's luck today and spun it into some nice chip towers (I especially like his hoard of green 25 chips).

Thank you...

But you can say that Nicolas (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=675) Levi (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=675) has taken all the French luck for that tourney... If I'm not wrong no french player survived yesterday...

Of course, there is the exception that proves every rule, and that exception is Table Levi/Norinder/Testud.

Nicolas Levi raises in early position, and Micke Norinder calls. Levi eyes him up. "I have the distinct feeling that you like me," he says. "I do like you, man," says Micke, but neither of them seem to want to get more involved than that at this stage. Paul Testud also calls, and so does Bjorn Agertved.

Flop - 9c 7c 4c

Nicolas bets 1200. Micke, probably because he likes him, calls. Paul Testud gets out of the way. Now Agertved dwells, boringly. Oh no, think I, it's going to be like every other hand I've watched, where everyone dwells for ages and nothing at all happens at the end of it. Then Agertved goes all in for 6325 total. Oh ok, think I, everyone's going to fold now. Now Nicolas Levi goes all in too, for loads!

Now Nicolas' new friend Micke lets out this kind of weird guttural groany scream like probably the sound that Vikings used to make when they were just about to rape or pillage. "WUUEEOOOOOEEUUUUUURRRRRR! That was my move!" says he. He thinks about it quite seriously for a moment, but gets out of the way.

Levi - 5c 6c obviously, what with that early position raise and everything
Agertved - Kc Jd

Turn - 2d
River - 5s

Agertved is OUT. So there you go. Who'd've thunk it.

It's just like Dana described today.  It's not that nothing is happening, because things are happening, but they're happening slowly and calmly with the minimum of fuss.  I must admit that from a playing perspective this collection of players here today is a wonder of quietly confident aggression, a tough and gentlemanly-behaved field which is producing some interesting hands and big stacks.  But from a blogging perspective, the total lack of loud Americans/drunk people/Tony G (busted) kind of leaves our early blind levels a bit thin for reporting.  I mean, we don't really want people to stand up and shout and call each other donkeys and provide a running megalomaniacal commentary a la Hellmuth, but maybe just for levels 1 through 3, during patches of slowness.  And not to imply that all North Americans have that kind of streak - playing today are Mike McDonald, Dustin Mele (apparently both in some kind of Team Pokerstars Sponsored Guest type thing) and Sasha Rosewood (pictured) all from the other side of the sea, and all just as delightfully low-key as their Scandie brethren.

I am aware that this would have been a better photo with some judicious cropping, but the expression of shock-horror on the face of the guy on the right was too amusing to waste.

Roy Brindley, pictured here somewhat depressed after sinking to just 4k at the break, might be in a better mood now having doubled up with Qc Jc on a Q-J-xxx board against Pascal Perrault's A-Q.  As it was he said it was a good thing I was taking his picture as he might be out any minute etc. etc. before describing the last fifteen minutes of play before the break as 'torture.'

OK it's Sorel Mizzi who is joining Annette on the road.  They are good friends and now each have a travel buddy, plus we learned that they've both bought houses from all their poker money.  They are really very sensible and articulate, which you might not guess from their LAG online personae.  Anyway, we found that there was both food AND beer in the conference room which made the whole thing much more interesting.  Now they get to play heads up and generally practise taunting one another, it looks like.

Oh, and zangbezan means 'call me' like on the phone, and he picked it as one alias because it sounds cool and is also relevant, sort of.

By the way, a few bits and pieces we established before the Betfair conference...

Andy Black was up to 13k, but ran his pocket Kings into a neighbour's Mighty 6-7 Offsuit and is long gone. Here he is expressing his feelings about me and my camera flash:

I was just snapping Dario Nittolo's proudly embossed nick-name and comedy-hand hoody (each card one off the half-Wilson, I note) when he promptly shoved his microstack all in preflop... resignedly showing down Ks 3s which failed to improve against his caller's Ad Jd.

But what I was taking his picture for was to compare with Stuart Rutter's The Nutter hoody which he appears to have made himself with poster paint.  Bless.  Also good for reinforcing that very image.

Big stacks include this gentleman, I think one Roger Johannessen:

I'm not sure, but I think it's not Roger Johannessen but Markus (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=644) Golser (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=644) ;carlocitrone;

And the lovely Freda, Peter Jepsen's girlfriend.

Mr Rutter would like it to be known that his phone is dead, so if he's not answering your calls, that is the reason. Or possibly he doesn't like you.

Anyway, he's back down to 15k or so - he lost a 14k pot with Aces, one of them a club, calling a guy all in on a two-club flop. The dude was holding Jc Tc and hit on the river.

His stack is still around averagey and perfectly manageable, but he says: "It feels like Groundhog Day, I just can't win a single all in."

The Rutter, incidentally, has moved table.

On New Table Rutter, Arild Moldoy has just doubled up with Tc Ts against Rigo Nyfjeld's  Aspades Kc. Board - a very firm Th Ad 5s 5h 9h.

Scandie Shows Emotion At Yucky Outdraw Shocker!

Young Toke Nielsen makes it 950 to go, and directly to his left, Olli Kurvinen makes it 2400. Nielsen calls.

Flop - Jh Jc 3h

Nielsen bets 3k, and Kurvinen dwells boringly for a while. I must say, I always assumed that a boring lengthy dwell usually resulted in a fold, but I am beginning to realise that for the young Scandies the boring lengthy dwell usually means they're going to go all in. Go all in he does. Now Nielsen checks his cards, looks a little irked, and dwells boringly for a little while. He duly calls.

Nielsen - 4d 4c
Kurvinen - Ac Kd

Turn - Qc
River - Qs

Suddenly not boring any more, Nielsen is outraged. He shouts something which sounds like "Knife, knife, knife, squirly thing!" and hits himself in the face with a magazine. He stalks off. Kurvinen shows no emotion.

Problems for Prague-Winner Arnaud Mattern… The cutoff whose name tag has him as Roland de Wolfe but who definitely isn’t and is in fact Omar Adel re-raised preflop to 3,100 after early position Peter Hedlund had opened.  Arnaud thought for a while before making it 6,200 – the kind of bet which pretty much would commit both of them if it was taken up… Hedlund got out of the way and Adel made a token dwell before moving all in with a weird slidey-round motion with his stack as if to say, “Are they going all in?  Aren’t they going all in?”  which must have been a bit annoying to Arnaud, who showed Ac Kh and had to wait for a pseudosqueeze and therefore slight slowroll from Adel with his Ahrt Ad.  Down to around 6k now.

Matthias Neu takes a hit to his not-so-comfy stack now courtesy of Luca Pagano.  He'd raised to 850 preflop and picked up one other caller as well as big blind Pagano.
Flop:  2d 6s 8d  Check to the raiser, who bets 2050.  Only the snappily dressed Italian calls...
Turn:  Ahrt  Now a considered check-check for a free
River: 9c  Luca Pagano throws out four blue 1k chips and whatever the opposite of a dwell and slowroll is happened almost too fast to be seen with the naked eye... Instacall and instaflip of 5c 7c for the second nuts for Pagano and a quiet muck from Neu.

Steve Jelinek is OUT - not sure what happened but he was under 4k at last count so I think they all went in and didn't come back out.

PRETTY LADY WATCH

Ms Pernille (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=699) Ravn (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=699) of Denmark, on around 15k:

Photo doesn't do her justice.  Had the pleasure of sharing a table with her last year in Copenhagen.  Nick (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=309) Slade (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=309) had her on Day 1 (in the being at the same poker table sort of way), and she was drawn on my table on Day 2.

Good player as well.

First I noticed this gentleman, Aron Wallden, because of his curious hoodie be-logoed in Soprano-esque fashion and featuring the names of those well-known Sopranos, um, Ingrid, Marthe, Jeanette.

The guy who looks really surprised to be raking in the pot next to Thinker Johan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=604) Storakers (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=604) here knocked out Henrik Gwinner who pushed with a not-really-foldable-to stack after he'd raised on the button.  He held Jh Qh and Gwinner 7d 7h.
The flop came Th Ks 6c but the tension of the race was firmly squashed with the Ad turn.  Drawing dead, a feeling which ranks somewhere above tooth pain and below locking your car keys in the car.

Over on table Slotboom super short stacked Trond Sundby looked ready to push when it folded to him on the button.  "Please take it easy on me," pleaded small blind Rolf, "I need the money!"  I have never seen anyone so protective of their small blind... anyway when Sundby's last 2,500 hit the middle it wasn't Rolf but big blind Roland Olsson who made the call showing 6h 6c to Sundby's Ts Js.  A 6d on the flop sealed the deal and we're down another player.

Arnaud didn't self destruct after his AK problem, but has been grinding with around 6k... but he did come to tell me during a particularly weird hand other people were involved in on his table, "I am going INSANE!"  Whether this is to do with the play or some of the players or the dealer, I am not sure, but one worries.  He said that the floor had just been called due to a pretty remarkable series of dealer errors - like so:

1) On the flop with two players in the pot, a guy not in the hand made the sign of the check (you know, tapped the table) and the dealer dealt the turn.  It was then pointed out that the checker had no cards.
2) The players (who hadn't acted) then sort of accepted that they wouldn't make a fuss and play the turn.  While action was still on player 1, who was doing some thinking, the dealer dealt the river.
3) Now player 2 wants to bet.
4) The floorman rules that the river is to be reshuffled into the deck and a round of betting completed for the turn (fair enough).  Player 2 now doesn't look so delighted about betting, but does anyway and somehow wins the pot right there.

Stuart Rutter, yo-yoing about all over the place, is in a much better mood now that he has doubled up to 29k, not least because he had Aces and it could so easily have gone terribly wrong.

He flat-called a raise to 1200, but there was another caller, and he was a-feared come the K-J-6, two-hearts flop. The original raiser bet 1800 and The Rutter raised to 3800, and then called the all-in. Original Raiser had Kd 3d.

"It's the first all in I've won in donkeys' years!" he enthuses.

Here is the happy couple, just before Micke yawned and put his arm around Nicolas:

Ramzi Jelassi has just been moved two to the left of Markus Golser (does Mr. Golser ever not build a good stack in these events?) who has 55k which makes his 30k look less good.  He sat down and received his first hand utg+1.  He raised (here we go, the table may sigh) to 1,025, called by Livio Foianesi and big blind Golser.
Flop:  7s 2c Kd  Check to Ramzi who makes it 2,500.  Pass back but not further than Markus who promptly makes it 6,500.  "Are you sure?" asks Ramzi, "It's my first hand..." then says, "It's winning," and folds what looked like a raggy suited Ace face-up.  "You wouldn't like it if I made it 15k..." he tries, but Markus is giving away absolutely nothing.

Nicolaj Linneballe, in the suit in the photo, has doubled up his 3.8k microstack. He shoved with Qh Qc utg and big blind Christian Grundtvig, not in the suit in the photo, called with Js Jd.

Board - a decidedly un-Jack-filled 3c Kh 3h 4s Ts

Steven "all in stevie" Devlin has doubled up, moving in on the turn of a 5d 7s Qs Jd board and finding a caller in Kenneth Gregersen.

I know Devlin has a monster, because he does not give me the evil eye as I take a photo of him while he is all in (a kind of blogger's tell). He flips over Qd Qh. Gregersen makes a sad noise, and flips over the Qc; he is informed that he must show his other card too, and it is the inconsequential seeing as he's drawing dead Ks.

UPDATE
- actually he's OUT now, apparently hurling himself into Ramzi Jelassi's Aces. Oops.

Arnaud Mattern appears to be wearing earplugs.  Perhaps they are some defence against Peter Hedlund, who has attracted some camera guys like large flies to, er, an unexpectedly garrulous Swede.  "Now it's the feature table!" announced Hedlund, before proclaiming: "The Dutch are really good at making beers.  And football."

Here pictured is Stu rutter, next to online qualifier, and...wait for it... UK player Nick Mazur!  I don't know if Mr. Mazur is still in but if his form has gone the way of Stuart's he will have built an OK stack, lost a race, played some risky Aces and built up to 30k.

Um, yes, obviously as soon as we find a UK player he promptly exits. One day someone's going to sue us for cursing them or something.

Anyway, I believe what happened was that Nick Mazur raised some preflop and then Stig Farholt re-raised to 5k or so (missed the very early stages of the hand, so I sort of pieced that back together with my Awesome Powers Of Deduction). Nick called.

Flop - Jh 3h Td and Farholt says, "How much you have?" They end up with Nick all in. He has Qd Qc. Stig Farholt has Ac Ad. No Queen, and he's OUT. I take a heartless photo of him as it's sinking in, before he's even stood up to leave. Sorry, Mr Mazur.

Um, yes, the Rutter Rollercoaster also continues. He's down to 12k again, after finding himself on the losing end of a QQ v AK race, an Ace on the turn. He is becoming hysterical.

The clock has been stopped, and they're playing the last apparently-randomly-generated-number-of-hands of the day. Today that number is seven. I shall continue to report stuff that happened before that while Jen watches those last seven hands.

Martin Skovgaard Anersen doubled up with Ad 3d on an  Ahrt 3s Aspades 5s 4d board, somehow convincing Frei Kjaer that he wanted to call on the flop with K-Q.

Tom de Groot is OUT, to the dude below who is not Tom de Groot (anyone?). All in preflop, his 3d 3h didn't stand a chance against his opponent's Ad Aspades, particularly when the first card out of the deck was another Ace.

Board -  Ahrt 5h Td 9c 2d (some very optimistic soul cried "hearts!" on the flop, but it was not to be.)

A couple of end of day counts as they prepare to wrap things up for Day 1B:

Rolf Slotboom - 12,000
Nicolas Levi - 22,000
Micke Norinder - 14,000
Stuart Rutter - 12,000
Ilari Sahamies - 47,000
Paul Testud - 20,000
Ramzi Jelassi - 45,000
Markus Golser - 50,000
Frederik Hostrup-Pedersen - 14,500
Charles Furey - 29,000
Arnaud Mattern - 6,500

Steve Frezer - 23,700

He gets his own line because he has the best attitude I've seen - cheerful, enjoying the game, not afraid to wear a sunhat indoors.  Plus he's wearing a shirt that says something nice and optimistic like "Yesterday is history, tomorrow never comes. Today's the day."  Or similar.

Yes, he always smiles at updaters, too. Even when they don't smile back. We are totally finished for the day, chipcounts to follow when Mad Harper (definitely a lady, to clear up the confusion) and those fine Pokerstars people send them over. Thomas Kremser: "Everybody please now LEAVE the tournament area. See you tomorrow at 2pm. Goodnight."

Daily report also to follow at the William Hill site, soon as we've written it.

Bar beckons.
