Title: greatest greyhounds ever
Post by: turny on February 27, 2008, 05:39:11 PM
there have been some great greyhounds over the years but the greatest ever is "cassies" dad "westmead hawk"

here he is in the best performance ive ever seen in a greyhound

bare in mind this aint no graded race, this is the semi final of the greyhound derby and the others are all good animals.

keep your eyes on trap 4 guys

"Oh my God, he got up" says it all really.

They say that Mick The Miller was pretty good, but i never saw him run, I must ask Tikay......

the guy who said that "errol blyth" is one of the greatest judges of all time and the disbelief and emotion in his voice tells you this run was special.

a dual derby winner there have been no better 10 years ago 20 years ago 50 years ago

better than Ballyregan Bob?

Title: Re: greatest greyhounds ever
Post by: turny on February 27, 2008, 05:58:57 PM
without doubt.

bellyregan bob was a very good dog but was predonintly a 6 bend animal. westmead hawk could win at 4 or 6 bends but to show that sort of finishing kick over 4 bends is phenominal.

hawk would have beat ballyregan bob easily over 4 bends and would have beat bob over 6 bends at most tracks in the country.

I don't go back quite that far Ralph, my sextegenarian friend.

I must have been to a dozen or more Greyhound Derby's - all bar one at White City, but I lost interest after it moved to Wimbledon.

The best two Derby winners I ever saw were Dolores Rocket, & Patricias Hope, the latter a dual winner, & good times in both cases.

Certainly, this Hawk machine looks the goods, but it's hard to compare these things from decade to decade. Very impressive, most certainly.

the two you mentioned were good animals tony, patricias hope was the last bitch to win the derby in 1972 and 1973.

white city was a much better track for the greyhound derby much better suited to fast dogs, "hawk" would have flown there.

there have been some great derby winners over the years and also some great dogs that never won the derby but luckily the greatest ever was still good enough to win it twice at a track that didnt suit his racing style at all!

most "judges" would class "hawk" to be the greatest and that is no mean feet for a greyhound who only retired last year. normally like in most sports you have to be retired for many years to get the recognition you deserve.

tony did by chance see "ballinska band" win the derby at white city in 1977?

judged by many to be the one of the greatest later years white city derby winners, the time certainly seems to suggest so.

rodneys (rookies fantasy) dad "Premier Fantasy"was certainly one of the greatest greyhounds never to win a derby in recent years.

he reached the quarter finals and was hot favourite to win the event but after blasting out went lame at the first bend breaking a hock in the process and ending his career.

here is his greatest performance to date at shelbourne park in ireland where he sets the track record, a time that still stands today.sheer pace from trap to line.

I sure did. Was a wide-runner, did a poor time as I recall, but the inside dogs had the best of it that night, so it was a good effort from the orange box.

The famous "Derby roar" that night was one of the loudest I ever heard.

yep ran from five but the time was exceptionally good at 29.16 which compared with the years around it exceptional. it was only the 1st or 2nd time the race was run over the metric 500m rather than the previous 525yards

Ahh, I'd quite forgotten that it had switched to metres then. I believe Patricias Hope ran 28.5? on her second Derby win.

she ran 28.68 in her second win in what was a tight race 1/2length, neck, neck between the first 4. her 28.55 run was a year earlier in 1972 and her first win when a 7/1 shot she won more comfortably by 3 1/2lengths the best time for 10 years

scurlogue champ was a freak, fantastic to watch he used to tail himself off at the back and then murder the field most of the time. on a few occasions he lost site of the hare and gave up.

he was open race class but not top top class, most of his wins were lower class opens or extreme distances. he was no match for bellyregan bob

heres one of his races, it needs to be seen to be believed and he ran all his races like this.

To be the best at anything, you need to have brains .... and when things dont go to plan you have to make the best of it ..

watch this dog get knocked over AND STILL WIN THE RACE !!

I have to say the fastest dog i ever saw was definatly Premier Fantasy in his very short career he just destroyed everything in sight his early pace was unforgettable he also still has the 525 TR in Shelbourne 28.08 amazing run.

The greyhound public were robbed when he smashed his hock in the English Derby as he was still a very young dog.

Spiral nikitas back straight pace at shelbourne had to be seen to be believed absolute aeroplane.
Him and his litter sister reached the Irish Derby final and she won it as a 14-1 outsider superb litter that was.

The breeders in Ireland have been a little dissapointted with Premiers start to stud but hopefully Final Zafonic can show his true potential.

That pup looks very well bred we have pups at 12 months old at the minute great lookers too and that is the time when we can dream...
