Title: Push or folds?
Post by: TightEnd on March 01, 2008, 10:48:28 AM
1.  25 left in Live MTT freezeout

Button with 21k has just doubled up raises to 4,500 blinds 600-1200/50. Seems solid but uninspired.

You are on BB with  5c 5d and 13k, way below average

push or fold?

2 16 left in same freezeout (different player!)

UTG 25k blinds 800-1600/75 raises to 5,500. Player just moved to table. Unknown

You look down with 19k at  Aspades Qs in late position

push? fold?

solid but uninspired lol

push no 1 - think you have a tiny little weeny bit of fold equity and should be ok against his calling range, but obv racing a lot.

Not sure about no 2 if he had a bigger stack I might push concluding that he was perhaps trying to be table captain but I think I might fold here vs utg at almost full table.

I would shove both, im less keen on number 1 to be truthful as we have little fold equity but its button raise so get it in.

I think i am folding both.

Players who have just doubled up are usually pretty tight for a round and you are faced with a big raise here.

Second hand he has made such a big raise again, i really don't like either spot.

Wow really I bow to your superior mtt knowledge/ record. You have to be putting them a pretty tight ranges to want to fold both, right?

It's a live comp....people are mostly nits. Throw into this that you can steal blinds a lot easier in live MTT's especially with Mr End's image and they become passes, i think.

The second spot i might still push i am not sure, its pretty marginal.

thanks James

we're talking two different players here (original raises) and two different players facing the push decision

on the first, against a just doubled up player....would we have more fold equity ("i've just got these chips" the solid but uninspired raiser may think) than against a normal button raise do you think?

second hand, facing an unknown UTG I am a folder. First one I thought was a close one

The "i've just got these chips" is a good understanding of his mentality. But better to attach that to his original raise and thus the quality of the hand rather than whether this gives you fold equity. Unless he is a particularly aggressive player I agree that a recent double-up will tighten a player up. He was in the danger zone and now he wants to bask in a little bit of security for a bit. If he jumps straight back into the mix by putting a quarter of his newly won stack back into the mix you would imagine he has a genuine hand.

You don't have more FE that's the problem, you would if you had moved in on his blinds but if he is opening he ain't passing. This assumes he is usual tight-bad live player.

Spot 1 i think folding is too tight and pushing is just terrible you have precisely zero fold equity against any sane reasonable player, i'm calling off the extra 8500 with 23 here once i've put 4500 in. Hence my play with the 55 from the BB would be a stop and go on ANY flop that doesn't contain a 5. That way you hopefully get him to fold ace rags/2 face cards etc that miss the flop without having to survive all 5 cards.
Spot 2 is very player dependent i'd fold to some and tank on others.

Disagree with Flushy.

We shouldn't have any FE in 1 against a player who is anyway decent. But it's live, so who knows what he might raise fold here. In any case, our hand is far too good to pass given our stack size.

In two our hand is again too good to pass given our stack sizes.

lol donkaments etc, but we just have to get chips over the line.
