I have heard great things about this show and am considering spending my hard earned cash on Season 1. However, before I make that purchase, I thought I'd pick the brains of the blonde community to see if I am making the correct decision.

What is the premise of The Wire? Are you a fan? What's so great about the show? If you don't like the show, why?

I am not just saying this in the hope that Dana will give me a discount on her CD :)

   The wire is brilliant,i cant recommend highly enough.I've only got the last ever episode to watch next week and i will be gutted that it will be finished forever.If you like the sopranos,deadwood or the west wing with multi character,multi storyline themes i'am sure you will love it.(by the way the first few episodes are a little slow but stick with it).
   The basic outline of the show is the battle between the drug dealers of Baltimore and the local police force,but neither side is shown in any heroic light,there is no real black and white.The first series deals with the police trying to WIREtap the cornerboys and get to their heiracy,some of the characters are so well done i ended up hooked and followed them through all five seasons.From the homeless Bubbles to the boys that work the corners and their ruthless gangleaders then on to the drunken wisecracking cops Bunk and Mc nulty and their corrupt leaders it's just great drama.
    The five "seasons"(yeah i know should be called series i hate it as well)show the desperate affect that drugs have on the city,the way the drugs are brought into the country,the corrupt politcians,the failing school system and finally the way the media portrays the whole thing.I know it doesn't sound a barrel of laughs but it really is just great tv.
     Watch out for Omar,"i robz drug dealers" he quotes as his profession,hes openly gay and this seriously pisses them off,the character is really up their with tony soprano and al swearagen as the best ever on tv.

Thanks for that, just what I wanted. What I might do is catch the pilot on the net to see if it's my cup of tea. Everywhere I look though they're giving it five stars, so it must be pretty decent.

give it a few episodes,it really is a bit of a slow burner at the beginning.

all 5 seasons up on ninja, season 1 I thought started a bit slow and got good at the end, but season 2 was amazing from ep 2 onwards.

just about to start watching 3 now.

Omar is probably the best character.

The Aussie series Underbelly is as good if not better on a similar theme (gangs, violence, drugs, sex, police)

The wire is superb, watched the first season on catch up (virgin) and have bought 2 and 3, it is gritty with a great story line. If you want to buy it amazon is the cheapest place at 15 quid. Each season is 30 on play.com.

have just started season 4, i love it, bunk might just be my favourite all time character.

I watched series 1 and it was not bad.  A few weeks back, series 3 was going for £6 in my local woolworths when the final sale was on.  It is one of those series that I always forget about when telling people to watch things, the other is sleeper cell.

Yeah you gotta stick with it.  When I started, for the first episode I couldn't understand a word anyone was saying.  The missus gave up with it straight away but I was determined to carry on.  Didn't take me long to get into it after that.  I like it because you dont' have to concentrate on it that much.  I can quite easily have a tourney on the go on the lappy and watch it at the same time.

I watched it on ninja while 4 tabling the first time and watching it again now on bbc 2 I realise I missed so much, Rawls in the background in the gay bar for example and the next scene that he's in he's calling everyone a cocksucker

this is the one show i'd refuse to be doing anything else while watching. everything about this show is incredible, the characters, casting, shooting etc is the bollocks - theres just so much happening that i dont need anything else to entertain me and id rather not be distracted. that and id struggle to understand a word if i was doing anything else


watch series one front to back and see if you feel the same. its not quite like other shows where each episode builds up to an ending, its more of a long-running saga, its not the simpsons!

The show is fantastic, but like the sopranos (which i love) at the end of each episode you look back and think not much happened.

The missus doesn't get it at all, but I liken it to reading a book when characters and stories develop much slower than say a movie.

it's storylines and characters are perfection, there a few bits i don't like as much as others but for me it's the best series i've ever watched by some distance.

I watched the last couple(i think 3 episodes) and it was like a sort of weak 80's nypd blue or ER/ chigago hope sort of thing

i reckon if i saw the last 15 minutes of good will hunting it would seem like it wasnt worth watching either

After having this recommended to me (thanks Ad ), i have watched series one the past couple of days and i have to say that it is absolutely awesome.......so glad i have 4 series still to watch plus all of heroes,gonna enjoy the  next few days.

take your time, everyone i've introduced it to is totally gutted when they get to the end and there is no prospect of more.
