Title: pro poker players as a %age of players
Post by: alexross on March 12, 2008, 12:29:32 PM
i need some general info on how many poker players are making a living out of it (as a %age of poker players in general) ... anyone know of any stats in this area? I know it will be a small %age but i need figures. http://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/Client/index.asp has some more general info on gambling statistics in the UK but nowt too useful.

any pointers/links appreciated

Persdonally I feel that it is so difficult to define a "pro" poker player (see many pages of threads about APAT eligibility)  that it will be almost impossible to come up with any sort of definitive figure or %age.

I would say it is below 1%.

I would say it is below 1%.

The true definition of a pro being making their sole living out of poker. I think it is safe to say that it is below 1%.

Id like to know how many circuit pros actually made a profit last year after taking out entrance fees and travel expenses

i'd imagine a lot of people would say that not having to work for anyone else and play a game you love playing and basically break even after all your life expenses have been paid would be pretty reasonable.

work full time earn your money and spend it all by the end of the year. play poker all year and be in the same situation sounds ok to me.

I agree it must be great, but I think there s a lot less players who basically broke even than what people think.
Its just something I often wonder how many actually do get to break even. Im not knocking anyone good luck to them I say.

We have to remember, the operative word here is "Pro" poker players, not poker players in general.

If you take a figure of about 10% of players being profitable, I can only imagine about 1% at most being Pro, not including people who have retired or work at Pizza Hut for fun.

You also couldn't include people who have had a big win and are surviving of that money, such as Jaime Gold or Chris Moneymaker. In the same way as you wouldn't say that someone who won the National Lotery is a professional gambler.

yeah it was always gonna be a bugger to quantify something like this.. you can't even tell using opr who might be profitable as they can obv be a cash winner or loser...
i guess only the poker rooms know how many players they have that are making enough to make a living in a given country  relative to the cost of living.
