Title: Basic AA question
Post by: bhoywonder on March 22, 2008, 12:37:54 AM
ok,feeling a little sick right now

after having got my third AA bust in mtt's while cruising along ok

Is the correct strategy to get em all in preflop if u can? even if ur V deep stacked?

all 3 times ive lost to underpairs ( all 3 got em in preflop ) and i think my poker brain has reached meltdown

lol..not a fair question mate..it was more of a bad beat moan than anything else, no? If you don't want to get all your chips in pre-flop with Aces anymore I would suggest taking a break from poker for a few weeks as you're not thinking clearly.

Game of luck? Perhaps - some people just seem to be born with luck and the rest of us have to work at it.

I have a mate who just can't win with AA, he doesn't play often as he's generally skint but hey he likes to have a go every now and then.

First time he hits in one of my tourneys he slow plays, hits  Aspades  Qd Tc on the flop, the player to his right makes a reasonable raise so he throws his chips in only to find he's playing  Kc Th. Doesn't hit anything and out he goes.

Asking what he did wrong we suggested that maybe if he had gone all in the guy would have folded.

Anyway, next time he hits AA he immediately goes all in and gets called by  Tc Td, yes you guessed it - a  Ts hits and out he goes again.

Third time he plays half his chips and gets called by an open ended straight draw which of course hits leaving him well confused and not knowing if he should ever play AA again.

What do I tell him?

you know you will win 80 times out of 100, so now you only have 16 more beats to take then you will have 80 consecutive wins to look forward to. ;)

If it makes you feel better, the last time I had AA I lost to trip 2's and the last 3 times I have had KK in cash games I've lost to AA.  I don't think that I;ve played them wrong, but it hurts at the time.

Socks up, reload, new hand and start again.  Shit happens but it's how you deal with it that defines you.

totally agree

and actually i dont know why i posted

boldie was spot on

part of the learning process
-
I'ved served my apprenticeship

..I cant grumble about bad beats, varaince,or any outdraw ( i really cant ).. I think i know my percentages ( been playing this game for over 4 years )..

I'm really beginning to know when to fold a losing hand....the next step is to push a losing hand into a winning position..which is easy online..not so easy live ( i find ) ask Boba fett ( i bet he has pushed me off a winner many a time )

anyway its all good and i think after all this emotion and vodka im still + ev which cant be that bad

and my point is??!!

more smirnoff

cheers

Funny thing is, I know exactly why you posted.  I've been through it, I'm going through it and it sucks balls.   I doubt my own abilty but  deep down know I'm right, but there's the burning question deep down am I doing it right.

We'll overcome it, good poker will prevail :D

indeed sir!!

playing live the other day

some monkey to my left ,some monkey to my right and im folding winner after winner after winner

but the thing is

i was ahead preflop

but behind after the flop.then catching up after all 5 are dealt

and i KNOW

i cant get em off ..so + ev..minus the fact that i didnt cash

so there it is in a nutshell ( gamble to cash or fold preflop when u know ur behind)

it's a tough one

and i don't have any easy answer as yet

but when i do

i think i'll do ok

I have left this thread alone as im not sure I could think of a constructive reply. What I would say is I think some posters on here are looking at poker from the wrong perspective.

Varience is a sod in poker and it can make us feel like we are never going to do anything right. In response to this we look for things to change in our game and there is nothing wrong with that. The problem is we are often looking in the wrong place, looking to get fancy and play non standard poker is not the way forward. We have aa lets look to get it in,end of.

We look at the big pots that we lose and look for ways to play them better, when they are coolers and bad beats. Alot of people think making big laydowns and big bluffs is the way forward in poker it often isn't. Try looking at the smaller pots, what could you have done in them, did you miss a value bet on the river when you obviously had the best hand. Are you making bad calls preflop which are leading to bad decisions post flop etc. The small pots are often where the best players make their profit.
