Someone logged into my friends poker account whilst he was playing, he contacted the site in question and they gave him the I.P address of the computer where the login happened and told him to got the Police.

What my friend would like to know is can he identify the person in question with a I.P address? i.e can he get his address, name, which country etc...

Be prepared to be patient when you go to the police - you may have to explain the situation very carefully numerous times before they get the idea to put you through the online fraud department. There are currently only a few officers in the whole country that deal with this sort of stuff, but once you get through to them, they are very helpful, and know their stuff.

Are you sure about that ironside? when the music companys wanted to nick people for downloading songs they had to get a court order to get access to the ISP customer files, many ISP will not give out the info even to the police without such an order. I guess if it's theft we are talking about then maybe the police will get the court order to catch the guy. Im just not sure

you could run an ip trace, but the very most you will get is the city the computer is in

It depends what country it's from I guess, I doubt you'll have much with somewhere like Guatemala, somewhere in the EU/US should be possible.

but ISPs even in usa will give the IP details out for fraud

They don't always need such orders, ISPs are very hot on not being seens to be allowing illegal activity to take place on their servers.

If this is a straightforward case of fraud (and this sounds like it is) then the police will have no problem getting the info, as long as it is UK based.

ps in a previous life i helped admin as an irc chat server of an ISP it takes 3 seconds to check who is conected to a certain ip number maybe 20 seconds if they are using a proxy and maybe a little longer if they are an expert in hacking but only the brightest can keep the police off there tracks for more than 6 hours

nemisis it wont tell you much apart from the ISP in the UK as 95% of ISPs in the UK are nationwide which is why tikay thought we had such a huge following in london (base of the largest ISPs in the uk)

in the USA it will tell more as ISP's are linked to there telcoms and are normally city or state wide

but you can download a tracert program off any major download site

Windows comes with a tracert tool. its called tracert
