Title: Pokerstars.com EPT San Remo: Day 1B - At A Glance
Post by: JungleCat03 on April 02, 2008, 01:27:50 AM
Hello and ;welcome;  back to the casino Sanremo as we await the start of Day 1B of the San Remo EPT. The EPT organisers excel at finding lavish locations to set the EPT events and the casino SanRemo is up there with the best. The sumptuous surroundings yesterday were lit up by the fiery excitement generated in the cauldron of the playing arena.

Big names came and big names fell until ultimately a mere 99 players remained to come back for day 2. We anticipate more of the same today. More carnage, more shocks, more great poker and please please please more of the absolutely delicious dessert that I eagerly wolfed down yesterday. Mmmmmm.

Play is due to commence at 15:00 local time, that's 14:00 for you guys. Join us as we continue the exciting journey to discover who will become the latest EPT champion...

Super-early bust-out for James Honeybone. The board reads 7-7-9-Q and James gets it all-in with Queens only to find Benjo Antonio Estfandiari sitting with pretty with Quads.

P.S

No knowledge if Antonio jumped on the table and pretended to swim shouting, "Quaaaaaaaaadddddddddddsssssssssss."

Early disaster for Andrew Teng, all-in on a flop of Ks 2h Qs with Qc 2c but up against the crushing Kd Kh, a 7h turn and then a Kc river for Quads left Andrew with just 300 chips, which he did manage to double up with next hand with K-5 vs 4-4.

P.S

No knowledge if the other guy jumped on the table and pretended to swim shouting, "Quaaaaaaaaadddddddddddsssssssssss."

Antonio Esfandiari has built on that early double up/ cooler hand versus James Honeybone by raking in another  decent pot.

I joined his table as he bet the turn of a 2 heart board for 450, receiving a call from mateyboy. The river was a third heart prompting a 2.1k bet from Antonio. Mateyboy again called only to suffer the misery of being shown Ahrt 6h for the nut flush. Antonio quietly collected the chips that move him up to 24k or so and the likely chip lead at this stage...

Marc Goodwin is one of those flying the flag for england today.

He hasn't got too involved yet, on roughly his 10k starting stack. Here he is covering up his mansion-sponsored shirt, accidentally I'm sure, and looking absolutely riveted with the action thusfar.

EPT Dortmund winner, Mike "Timex" Mcdonald is fairly quiet at the moment. Perhaps he's heard the rumours that there are some hoodlums lurking in the tournament and is biding his time before making a move.

Apparently these guys are masters of disguise. In fact there is one at his table, but he's pretty hard to spot. Perhaps the more (http://thumbs.photo.net/photo/2230387-sm.jpg) viewers amongst you might spot the chameleonic ne'er do well?

There are many other players of note in the arena today in a field that looks littered with stars.

John Kabbaj is present, off tha back of his recent good performance in the Irish open.

Ramzi Jellasi, who has run REALLY bad in these EPTS...

(I'm tallking about running as bad as this fella...

)

...is BACK and hungry for success. Can the young Swedish pro put his previous EPT nightmares behind him today?

Also I noted the imposing figure of Tony G entering the arena late, simultaneously increasing the star, noise, table insult and controversy quotients of the tournament.

Tim Blake lost a load of chips early on with A-Q to trip Aces, but then he hit Quad Jacks to get himself back up to 9k.

Johnny Lodden is OUT. He got all his chips in on the turn of a 5-8-6-Q board with 5-5 only to find out his opponent, Mr Cowboy below, had turned a set of Queens and then hit the case Queen on the river for Quads.

The impeccably dressed Gino Alacqua got it all-in by the river of a Kh Qh Ks Ahrt Qc board, his opponent quickly called all-in with Kd Qs only for the Prague EPT runner-up to show Jh Th for a turned Royal Flush!

***********The players are currently on a 10 minute break*****************

I grabbed a quick chat with Roberto Romanello during the break. He's had a torrid start ("Some of the players are REALLY bad!" - he told me) but after going down to 3k or so, he recently doubled up, shoving with Q-Q and getting looked up by A-2.

"I hit a Queen but it was a scary board coming A-Q-3-A and a final effective blank T was safe enough!"

Roberto says if he can get some chips, he can use his world famous table talk to win him some chips. Here he is chirpy chatty and undeniably welsh as always. Good luck Roberto!

Juha Helppi has hit an early double up with 7c 4c on a 7s 4h 6s board vs Aspades Qs after harmless blanks on the turn and river.

William Thorson has lost about 5k after setting a short-stack all-in on a 3d 9h 6h flop with Jc Jh, but his opponent had Ahrt Kh and hit the Qh on the turn to leave the Swedish player drawing dead.

Tim Blake has knocked out Soren Kongsgaard lookalike Johan Berg who held A-Q on a Qh 4s 6h Qd 5s board, but plucky Tim was not the one saying, "Hasta La Vista Blakey," as he was holding 6d 6s for a full house that put him over 20k.

Kevin Shutt was meant to be sitting next to Ramzi Jelassi but Ramzi said that the guy to his right, whom he thought was Italian, was OUT. Ramzi bet a Q-7-5 board with 8-6 and only Italian guy/Kevin? called, the latter c/raising all-in on the 4 turn with 7-5, by which time Ramzi had the nuts and knocked him out.

Stephan Kjerstad -- 7k

Some assorted chip counts from the playing arena.

J Kabbaj - 9k
Mike Mcdonald - 12.5k
Arnaud Mattern 7.5k
Todd Brunson (who incidentally makes it VERY difficult to count his stack as he usually has his chunky bear-like forearms clamped firmly round his stack) - 6.5k
Dan Negreanu - 12k

Stuart Rutter - 7.5k - Stuart has his "lucky" charm with him today. You saw him posing earlier with "REG THE CHICKEN" who has accompanied Stu to San Remo. So far though Reg has not been working his magic. As I approach Stu's table to talk to him, he lifts Reg up and gives him a glum squeeze resulting in a somewhat limp squeaking noise coming out of the chicken. It was a heart rending moment.

"He's not doing it for me at the moment. Down to 7.5k" Stu tells me.

"Start using Reg to push your chips in" I advise him. "That will probably help"

"I need some chips first!!"

Mads Wissing Andersen (best middle name ever imo) raises to 425 from midposition, Danny Ryan calls next to him. Everyone else folds.

Kh Ad Kc

Mads checks, Danny bets 600, Mads calls.

2d

Mads checks again, Danny bets 1,300 and again Mads calls.

9s

Mads checks once more and Danny fires a third 2,500 bullet. Mads calls, Danny taps the table and mucks. Mads shows Ahrt Jc.

Isabelle Mercier is down to 7.5k after one particular hand.

I missed the preflop action but Isabelle bet out 2k on a Qh 9h Tc flop, only to find Pier Fabretti raising in position to 5k.

Isabelle huffed and she puffed, but ultimately it was her house of cards that blew down as she threw her hand into the muck in disgust. She instantly leapt to her feet and walked away from the table, steam pouring out of her ears, looking as though she wanted to kick some serious butt. A channel cleared in the dense throng of watching press to let her pass as she sliced through them like a little Canadian firebrand through some eurodonk butter.

Here she is mid decision, seconds away from combustion.

Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier, winner of the Caribbean leg of the EPT , is now very short. Climbing to the heights of 17k earlier on, he has since had several bluffs picked off and finds himself very short on 3.1k.

One of the casualties of today is Brian Flood. He will no doubt be an unknown to most people but I spent sometime talking to the Canadian player at the opening of the EPT. He told me he plays thousands of online comps every year as well as being involved in the running of a big chain of pool halls.

I promised him if he did well then I would get a few pictures of him and some good puns on his name, but as he busted out before I got the chance, all i can say is that "Flood is all washed up." Good game sir!

Roberto Romanello has just doubled up to 26k getting it all-in on a Jh 6h Jd flop with pocket Sixes against Ahrt Qh which was drawing much thinner than it could possibly imagine.

Elky is OUT. 8-8 vs J-J on an A-J-8 board.

Soren Kongsgaard has 15k having disposed of Marco Traniello on a K-high two heart board vs Ahrt 5h.

Mike McDonald makes a nice little value bet on a 2d Ts 9c 2h 4c with Td 6s against Juha Helppi for 1,100. But soon after he loses 4k to a short-stack calling a limp/re-raise all-in with A-J and finding himself dominated by A-K. He has about 7k remaining.

Arnaud Mattern, winner of the EPT Prague and owner of the most celebrated eyebrow in poker, is looking a bit short, holding a mere 6.5k at the moment.

Danny Negreanu is busy raising almost every pot in late position as he is prone to do and so far his strategy is paying dividends as he is up to 20k or so.

Here he is, receiving a massage from an invisible Suki and loving it maybe a bit too much.

I travel over to EPT Dortmund final tablist Johannes Strassman's table only to find the ex-army man has gone AWOL. I send out a team of commandos to locate him but manage to catch a shot of his impressive stack, up to 23k+ at the moment.

Also notice the worst attempt in history to appear surreptitious whilst sneaking into a photo by the dealer...

Aha, my commandos report back successfully and have tracked down Strassmann to a location near to Danny Ryan. I move in with my reconnaissance team and we discover him chatting away to the currently less successful but equally cheerful Danny Ryan, down to 7k after that unsuccessful bluff earlier.

Trond Eidsvig bets 1,975 on the turn of a Ac Td 3c Qd board, having also bet decently on the flop. He's called but then forced to face a 3,500 bet on the river 2s. He counts out his stack and eventually calls, only to be shown a turned gutshot Kh Js, sickened, he flings his cards in the muck and says, "Nice hand sir." At least he has now a 1 hour dinner break to stave off the tilt.

Mike McDonald is OUT. He moved in on the turn of a Qh Th 4d Ac board with 5h 4h and was looked up by Juha Helppi's Kh 8h for the "everything draw". Juha hit the Kd on the river and we're down an EPT champion.

Hows Roberto's stack looking?

thanks for the updates

I don't know how he does it sometimes but from a low point of 3k, Roberto, the Welsh Wizard, has conjured his stack up to a whopping 22k or so.  He had a big beaming smile on his face as I spoke to him and I fully expect Radio Romanello to be broadcasting full volume on all frequencies very shortly.

Great work Roberto!

Todd Brunson - short 7k or so.

On a 9c 8s 9h 7s board, Antonio Estfandiari bets 2,400 and is check/raised to 5,500. After a serious think, he says, "I'm folding a straight to you sir..." he flashes the 6d 5d. His opponent shows him 9d 9s for more quads and then jumps on the tables and pretends to swim in the chips shouting, "Quaaaaadddddddddddssss!"*

Odd situation for Josh Gould just now. There was a mid position raise to 1,200, flat-called from the button and Josh pumped it up to 4,800 from the big blind. At this point, the dealer raked in all the chips and dealt an 8s 5c 3c flop before the two other players had even thought about calling the re-raise. With the burn card already taken out, the flop was re-shuffled into the pack and action went back on to the original raiser who ended up quickly folding, as did the button. Josh up to 28k.

Stuart Rutter is surviving at the moment - up to 8.5k which is actually an improvement from earlier...

"I've had lots of interesting hands - had to bluff about 8 times and got away with half of them so I can't tell how well I'm playing."

He tells me he's been taking strategy advice from Reg, his LUCKY CHICKEN.

Here is Reg, available for poker tutoring up to 10/20NL.

You think Lloyd is tough with his advice though, wait till you meet Reg. Looks are deceptive. He takes NO prisoners...

Barking mad lunatic Soren Jensen is thinking for ages, shaking his head continually as he systematically flicks one card over another whilst eye-ing up the 5k bet his opponent has put into the pot whilst the board reads Aspades 5d Jc Kc 7s. He does this for about a minute, before taking out the 5k and putting into the pot and quickly turning over Ad Qd. His opponent mucks, the fire in Soren's eyes lights up. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a Soren eruption!!

"SOOOOOOOOOOREEEEEEEEEEEN, SOREN KUN SUE ME!!! AYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEE SOREN SOREN SOREN!" and temporarily Soren the poker player has been replaced by Soren, the 9th century Viking Beserker, drunk with rage and out to rape and pillage...

Or at least dance around like a kid with his arms aloft, screaming for a minute.

He has over 30k. We have burst eardrums.

John Kabbaj is going along well on 20k or so.

As I join his table he raises to 1200 from EP and is called in 2 spots.

FLOP 2d 8h 7d

Check from Kabbaj, Mateyboy 1 bets 700, raised to 2,100 by mateyboy 2, JK gets out of the way, Mateyboy 1 calls...

TURN: 8c

CHECK, CHECK

RIVER: 4h

CHECK, Bet of 3.5k, called by Matey 1.

Matey 1 shows T-T which is good versus the busted mighty flush draw of matey 2 Jd 4d.

Here is John, pre-surgery to have a Katja Thatur growth removed from his head, sandwiched between two zombies...

Tony G!

One of my favourite players and he's barely had a mention.

To be fair he is secreted discreetly away in a far flung corner of the poker room. Nontheless I travelled far and wide, traversing dangerous lands, braving wave after wave of belligerent media trying to halt and hinder my progress but ultimately, bruised and bloodied, I emerged and found shining in my path, the holy grail and purpose of my adventure.

TONY G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the man. He was a bit miffed actually as he'd jsut had a bad beat KK v JJ. Thank god it wasn't a Russian who did it!

He currently has 10k or so and looks a bit tired. Don't worry though...I gee'd him up!

Big pot for Jan Heitmann.

UTG limps, Jan limps in mid-position, the button limps, the small blind folds and the big blind checks.

Qs 4d Td

With 1.4k in the pot, the big blind open shoves for 6k, UTG calls, now Jan thinks and then pushes for around 24k total. UTG snap calls!

BB: Jd 9h

UTG: Ahrt Aspades

Jan: Qh Th

Turn:

5c

So, Jan has to dodge any Ace, King, Four, Five or Eight...

River:

9c

No luck and Heitmann is the chip leader with 60k.

Roberto has been SHOOTING up, now on a massive 37k or so. Wowzer.

As I predicted the augmentation of his stack has been matched by a proportionate increase in the noise levels at his table. It's interesting because he is sharing the felt with Johannes Strassmann. I witnessed Johannes first hand on the final table in Dortmund and he was by far the most vocal of all the players there.

He hadn't met Roberto at that stage though.

As Roberto raises another pot and wins the blinds, Johannes tries to make him put the brakes on.

"You're raising too much, I'll have to get involved soon!"

"I'm raising too much??? Every time I've riased I've shown a hand. Not like you. You keep raising and showing me T-8 rubbish like that. Isn't that right?"

[Roberto gestures to his tablemates looking for support. There is just some quiet Italian giggling.]

"I've always got a hand me." - Surprisingly the table doesn't burst into laughter at this point. Whatever, it's working well for Roberto and he now holds a powerful stack.

Here is mid lecture on his tight raising requirements with the fellow to the left of the dealer trying desperately to get a word in!

"I raised to 1,200 with A-7. I get one caller, the flop comes 4-4-7 with two diamonds, we both check, the turn is the Ad, he bets 1,000, I make it 3,000, he makes it 8,000 so I go all-in for 25,000. He calls with Ac Qd and rivers the Td."

George down to around 5k.

I bumped into Martin Wendt as he popped out for a quick cigarette.

"How's it going Martin"

"Ahh, not great. Only got 10k"

We chat a bit about a couple of things and he mentions several times how he thinks Julian is a great player and even has a quick chirp about how he had a % of him in Baden.

"I knew he would win a tournament soon at that point" - pretty spot on judgement then!

Here's Martin, hoping to work his 10k into a worthwhile stack...

Just after this, Soren came marauding into the area, clenching his forearms repeatedly, waving them about like he was carving apart foes on one of his viking expeditions.

I tried to photograph him but he called on the spirits of Valhalla before I could snap him and disappeared with a roar into the ether. He's an amusing chap i must say!

Artist's impression.

Thanks for the great updates guys.

Any news of Paul Gourlay please.

15k at the moment, with 'Rocket Man' by Elton John on the iPod. :D

Tim Blake is also around this amount with about 17k.

Best dressed man in the room, Gino Alacqua is OUT.

Pretty dealer picture to keep you perked up. Sorry to the guy on her right who thought I was snapping him. Hey I was! Kind of.

Stu Rutter - 9k now. Can't seem to build his stack into something worthwhile but he's not sinking yet. Here he is with his poker tutor. The guy on his right really needs to sort out his dreads though - I hesitate to say they're dreadful but.........they're dreadful!

Tim Blake aka the Timinator...( Ah go on then....just one more time!

)

is down to 11k and suffering. He'll be needing to make a move to double up soon.

Danny Negreanu - 22k. Good work from the canadian superstar!

Dennis Kobbero Plejdrup is OUT, victim of a canadian player i THINK is called Jordan Lande.

Lande flopped a set of 8s with 8-8 whilst Dennis 8-9 top pair was virtually drawing dead on the flop and by the turn, it actually was. He'll probably be telling his mates about his one out bad beat later...

Lande up to 35k or so...

Stuart Rutter is OUT. Kh 4h against Jh Jd with a Jack on the flop for good measure.

Soren Kongsgaard is out too, he ended up all-in on the river of a A-7-4-9-6 board only to run into a river 8-5 straight from the big blind.

Daniel Negreanu is complaining about the lack of hands per hour, we've had three in twelve minutes, and to be honest, there does seem to be a lot of unnecessary dwelling, guys waiting to the last second before calling all-in after a clock has been called. It would annoy me too.

George Danzer is OUT.

After a load of limpers, 'Tiny Dancer' Paul Gourlay pushed for 5,250 and managed to get all of them out, he then showed Jc 7h

Mark Teltscher has snuck into the tournament area using a media pass. He multi-jobs you know... ;)

Todd Brunson has lived in the shadow of his fellow overseas superstar players today but he is starting to come into his own now, moving his stack up to 27k...

...Meanwhile early riser Daniel Negreanu has not capitalised on his earlier success, holding a mere 20k, which puts him under a little more pressure now.

Tim Blake has nursed a short stack for some time now, although he will be forced to get his chips in very soon, with less than 10k at the moment.

Can I get an update on Mark 'Randal' Flowers?

He's on the left.

Ok, I THINK he has 20k. I saw a guy who looked a bit like him with that stack so hopefully that is him, although I didn't have the camera so couldn't snap him to confirm at the time.

Marc Goodwin has jsut doubled through.

He made a good call with Kings on an A-A-x board, only to be shown 9-9.

And as they go into last four hands for the day.

Anthony Lellouche bets 10k into a 11k pot on a Ahrt 2s Ks Qs Ad board. Benjo Antonio Estfandiari calls after a good old think.

The frenchman flips over Aspades Kc and Antonio mucks quickly. Lellouche must have close to 100k now.

Ludovic Lacay, on the other hand is OUT. 8-7 on a K-8-7 board, up against K-K...

Play has now finished for the day.

Chip counts to follow when we get them, most likely tomorrow due to the lack of net access outside the Casino.

;stickaforkinme;

See you tomorrow at 3pm (2pm UK)
