Title: Always broke set over set?
Post by: Newmanseye on April 08, 2008, 05:11:52 PM
Is it just me or am i making a mistake time after time.  I seem to go broke with set over set a lot, A LOT!!,

Now on boards with no flush or straight draws, and i get my cash in with my set's only to find my bottom or middle set is almost dead to a massive set like queens Kings aces etc.

Now not one to complain, but i can only assume i am making some huge error with these hands.

Any pointers for baby sets?

This answer in 99.9% of situations is yes.

I have seen the odd hand where it was 3 way super deep against nits where the arguement for folding bottom set was well put. If you stack off with a set on non drawy boards, be happy.

i felt there was a good chance i was beat here and i said to my mate on the river that there was a good chance hes got pocket aces here as ive played with this guy a fair bit. but came to the conclusion that if hes got me so be it ive still got push for value. i dont like posting bad beats on here but i think this is a good example why uve just gotta shove
for value on theses boards.

this is another example were this guy in the long run just isnt going to get the maximum out of his hands. checking behind on the river is just really poor imo when theres very few hands that beat him.

There might be some cases where you can fold bottom set.  You would have to have at least 200bbs and have shown stregnth pre-flop, been called and the flop isn't drawy or likely to have hit two pair e.g 3 5 9 rainbow and the opponent is nitty.  However, these situations are very rare.

After a cooling off period, i have to say i was probably venting and whinging a wee bit, today Sets caused me no limit of trouble this week and today in particular, Truth is i probably tilted a bit too.

I usually throw a party when i hit my set.

*Takes note that when Mr Bingo throws a party he has a set and I can fold top 2 :)

Doyle says if your behind to bigger set after the flop, nothing you can do... Thats good enough for me...

In one of his books Phill Gordon says something like : <<When I flop a set, Somebody will have another set 1 time to 100. With that odd, I'm happy to risk all my chips>>...

But me too, I have lost 4 sets in 1 day (all in on the flop - few days ago) : 3 over sets and a backdoor flush...

I only really play heads up, but most of the time I go broke with a set over a set, especially if my opponent is aggressive. If he is an absolute nit and the board is a complete rainbow, then yes, I believe you can get away, but this very seldom occurs.
