Title: Computer/i pod help
Post by: Pelham Boy on April 08, 2008, 07:28:42 PM
I bought an i pod touch yesterday and it's not being picked up by i tunes. I tried all the steps recommended including uninstalling and re installing i tunes, but still no good. I took it back to the shop and swapped it,while i was there i got them to try it on one of their pc's to check it worked. I get it home and it's exactly the same.
I spoke to someone in the shop this afternoon and he went through a few more things including firewall settings etc. Then he said my computer may not have usb 2.
I have no idea if it has or not or how to check.
Would this make a difference?

Go to your control panel, select system, and click the "hardware" tab (assuming windows XP). Click device manager and scroll to the bottom. Click the plus sign by Universal Serial Bus Controllers. You should see at least one Host Controller. If you see the word "enhanced" in its name, you have USB 2. If you don't, it is just plain 'ol USB.

You don't need to have USB2 to use an iPod through iTunes.

Check out their knowledge base/forums, there will be an answer on there somewhere.

Well how daft is that?!

Anyway, it's easy peasy to install usb2 on your pc (wouldn't have a clue how to do it on a lappy though) it would only be a 5 minute job and cost under £20 to do it yourself, problem solved :D

You can get them cheap enough,

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=566458

only a fiver and they're easy to install.   If you have a local PC World, you may just as easy get one there

I have been on a i pod forum and i was told i could get a cable. Sounds easier if i can.

To install, Open Case, unscrew one of the slots at the back of the comp, take the usb card out and plug it in.  It literally will take less than two minutes to do, certainly don't pay anyone to do it.

You make it sound ridiculously easy! I'll give it a go.

It really is that simple, the one I did myself also had front ports, and literally took minutes to install.

DON'T be fooled into thinking you can't do it yourself.

Be careful when removing a cover from the slots though, some of them can be hard to remove and a friend of mine managed to slice his finger quite badly.
