Title: What do song lyrics really mean?
Post by: Dingdell on April 20, 2008, 11:51:12 AM
Having a chat today with a friend of mine who invariable (and annoyingly) proves themselves right in any discussion we have. Today I would like to turn that around if possible.  The Eagles song 'Take it Easy' has the following lyrics;

Well, I'm running down the road
Tryin' to loosen my load

I've got seven women on my mind,
Four that wanna own me,
Two that wanna stone me,
One says she's a friend of mine.

Does this or does this not mean he is trying to (difficult to phrase on a family forum) get rid of the white stuff? I think it does, my pal thinks it means he is trying to relax and just unwind, think through the day and relax that type of thing but no sex involved.

Thoughts please?

Oi!!  He would like to think so yes but normal is such a difficult thing to define....

So you think it's nothing to do with 'you know what'?

never understood what, youve been out riding fences ,  really means

"Riding fences"

In the old west, cowboys used to ride along endless miles of cattle fencing to check for breakage, do repairs and round up strays.

Sometimes they could be away from home for weeks.

've got seven women on my mind,

One says she's a friend of mine

The suggestion was that these were the days of the week. Mon-Thur with hard work, Fri and Sat with partying, and Sunday with church.

Google doesn't know about Billy Hardy. He used to work with me sometimes when I was nobbut a stripling.

He had a very vivid imagination. Most of the things he imagined involved sex or violence.

One on his most famous quotes (after me and another friend had wound him up) was, "If I had two knives, I'd stab both of you!"

Well, I'm running down the road
tryin' to loosen my load

I've got seven women on
my mind,
Four that wanna own me,
Two that wanna stone me,
One says she's a friend of mine
Take It easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels
drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
and take it easy
Well, I'm a standing on a corner
in Winslow, Arizona
and such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed
Ford slowin' down to take a look at me

Come on, baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is
gonna save me
We may lose and we may win though
we will never be here again
so open up, I'm climbin' in,
so take it easy
Well I'm running down the road trying to loosen
my load, got a world of trouble on my mind
lookin' for a lover who won't blow my
cover, she's so hard to find
Take it easy, take it easy
don't let the sound of your own
wheels make you crazy
come on baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is
gonna save me, oh oh oh
Oh we got it easy
We oughta take it easy

Billy Hard syndrome - maybe - but all of the above makes me think he's looking for a bit of rumpy?

Thoughts please?
 ;carlocitrone;

FWIW, I always thought "loosen my load", in the contect of that wondeful song - I still play it regularly, it's not dated at all, ditto Hotel California - was a euphanism for casting off the cares of life. We carry heavy baggage, & it's nice to get rid of it. Which I suppose, in itself, lends itself to mis-interpretation, but I mean it in the innocent sense.

Had it been, say, an Eminem lyric, I would have read it different, of course. The Eagles lived in more innocent times. I think.

I loathed "Desperado" for some reason, always skipped that track, but I took "riding fences" to mean taking care of life's bits & bobs.

Well obviously at this time of day it's only a small poll. The people who understand and know what I'm talking abut aren't up yet. Just the old people and clean living ones who are awake at this time of day on a Sunday.

On that basis there is still a chance I'm correct.  ;D

As the Eagles spent most of the 1980s and 1990s out of their collective trees (with only a brief respite for Don Henley to pay for his 8th divorce with "boys of summer" ) only to reform for a lucrative reunion tour, I would say its easiest to say they wouldn't have a clue what the lyrics meant

On that basis Dingdell is right. and completely wrong. and utterly clueless as to why. and has been whooshed

rotflmfao oldmanaments

Eminem would have just come out and said it and doesn't have to use euphemisms like the stoners of the Eagles did. Almost all old music is about the same stuff modern music is about..it's only the wrods that have changed.

just wondering what dindgell thinks ken dodds old song is about,i think its just having fun

A pe-nis
A pe-nis
The greatest gift that I possess
I thank the Lord that I've been blessed
With more than my share of a pe-nis.

I presume it was about the bloke he had in to play the piano for him?

yes, reminds me of the guy that was granted one wish and spent the rest of his life as a twelve inch pianist.
