"Congratulations to Richard Prew of London, the winner of the first annual Football Outsiders Draft Contest. Richard, who correctly predicted 26 of the 32 players selected in the first round and nine players in their exact slot, informs us that it’s possible to watch the draft live on ESPN even in the UK. What a wonderful world we live in"

two years ago that was

Huge day Saturday, Ryan playing at Oxford United, Leicester against Sheff Wed in a relegation six pointer and then rush home for NASN and the draft.

the Bears.....get a franchise left tackle such as Chris Williams to protect the QB and open up running lanes.

I hear they are looking for a RB. Benson is still recovering from his broken leg and the team suffered last year after releasing T. Jones.

I forget the name of the guy they are looking at i think he is at Michagan.

Gonna be interesting to see what the Dolphins do. The rest of the draft can change depending on that.

Rashard Mendenhall from Illinois?

I think they will definitely go left tackle, as the running back class is very deep, will get a very good rb in the second round.

'Tis true, Tighty has had one hell of a fortnight, & he's never wilted once. Top bloke him, & I hope he relaxes for once on Saturday. He deserves it. Mind you, as you say, on Sunday......

Is there a big correlation between top draft picks and the players who go on to be really good in their careers or are there lots of top college kids who were first drafts and then went on to be rubbish?

Its pretty mixed. Whilst there are some sure things, there are a number of "busts" who never live up to the position they are drafted

The teams throw huge resources at scouting networks, with varying results. Often a superstar is only drafted late or not at all.

Part of the fun for the idle fan is predicting the winners/losers and the bargains.

With the Dolphins and the Rams making their picks already what trades are going to be made by teams such as the Falcons to move up the draft.

Do you think the Dolphins will try to get back into the 1st round by trading to continue the Bill Parcels rebuilding process.

So many DE and tackles in the draft and not so many good QBs and RBs will be interesting to see what happens next

Can the 49ers get anyone decent?! sigh my teams are doing so bad.

The 49ers traded their pick with the Patriots so they dont get to pick until number 29. So it depends on what is left from the 1st round when it gets to them they will prob look for a LB to help the defensive line. By interesting to see who the Patriots get with the no.7 pick.

lol i love it, that sounds like the same 'family commtments' I have too.

Rich , it would be great if you could give us a run down of how you think the draft went if you get a chance.

Will do Phil. Its high time blonde had an NFL Child board

the Dolphins? Parcells will stock up in the trenches, expect more OL, DL and LBs.

Then when he has steadied the ship with say an 8-8 season he'll draft skill players next year

tried and tested formula he uses for turning round franchises.

I expect the Falcons to trade 2 of their rd 2 picks to get back to say Number 28 to draft Brian Brohm the QB

I also expect Baltimore to get to the back end of Rd 1 to draft Chad Henne the QB assuming Ryan is gone when they pick at 8

Is that the QB from Hawaii? Heismann nominated no? On that note is Tebo (sp?) in the draft? If so where do you think he'll go and is he as good a prospect as Eli Manning and Carson Palmar were?

Colt Brennan from Hawaii

Too early for Tebow, next year.

Dont think the bears drafted that well. Address a few problem positions but i think they could of got other players to fit the same spots.

The raiders have made a mistake imo drafting Mcfadden at 4. he is No.1 in fumbles in the college game over the last 2 years and they have plenty of RBs on the books that they havent given a chance to. Dorsey should of been their pick.

Suprised the Ravens gave up so much to jump up to 18 to get Joe Falco. With Henne and Brohme dropping so low they could of got a good QB without giving up so much.

Dallas drafted well and with Pacman now on board just needing to have his ban lifted the cowboys could be in good shape if they can keep the locker room happy. Saying that they are in the toughtest position and i can see them finishing either 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th this year.

I think the steelers also drafted well

The rebuild has started at the Dolphins but Parcells has a long way to go yet. We do know that he will be ruthless.

I got the Bears pick right, above. Overall their draft was underwhelming.

Kansas City had a draft for the ages

Dallas did ok, happy enough. Tough division as you say, but a lot of talent and now far more speed on that team. I think they will win the division again.

As for my football club, we're stuffed. Deservedly so.

So which of the draftees do you think will be contenders for rookie of the year. i know position makes a big difference as some players are more likely to get chances are some positions over others.

The good think for the bears is the weakness in their division. No strong QB in the division the Vikings should be the team to beat but any of the 4 could win it.

Title: Re: Please behave on Saturday

The Vikings will really challenge this year

Adding Jared Allen to two great DTs will make them a force, especially when the Bears are so suspect at QB. With Adrian Peterson there, I think they are a team on the rise and a good bet to win that division ahead of the favourites, the Packers

ROTY wise...a lot depends on situations and teams they are on..offense candidates are Felix Jones (going to be playing on a potent offense), McFadden (though the starting position is a lot worse)

defense....Mayo at the Patriots (pretty good team to get drafted too), Gholston at the Jets and possibly Dorsey if the Chiefs make a quick turnround

Do you think the bears should of considered going for Jeff Otah.

it seems to me they didnt look for a superstar to save on wages

picking benson at 5 a couple of years ago its time he delivered for his contract. i wish we had kept Jones

Williams or Otah...not a huge difference really

3 fundamental problems

a) No quarterback

b) Defections from the OL, now being addressed

c) Anaemic receving team

the Bears will stay competitive due to a fine defense and stellar special teams but won't compete at the top of the division until the offense comes around..these draft picks are only the first of about three necessary years worth to do that

Benson was a bust, and the decision to release Jones always seemed odd.

Title: Re: Please behave on Saturday

Jones and Benson hated each other and were causing problems in the dressing room. They had no choice but to trade 1 of them. Benson was the one who they had invested most in but Jones was the 1 putting up the best numbers.  So Jones was on his way.

Not a great QB and with no strong QB in next years draft im sure theBears will be in the same position next year.
Losing the 2 best WR on the team will hurt but a couple of trades and draft picks in that position means it will be a wait and see. Hestler playing WR for the offense this year will be interesting to watch, hopefully it wont hurt his special teams performances though.

Urlacher wants a new contract even though he only a couple of years into his 7 year deal. Resigning Briggs will be good news but Tank Johnson not replaced and losing Agybeny will hurt.
