Title: Mars Phoenix
Post by: technolog on May 25, 2008, 10:30:18 PM
NASA's Phoenix lander should complete its 10 month, 400 million mile journey tonight at around 0:52 BST. It's looking for organic molecules in the frozen soil near the northern pole, the presence of which would signal the possibility that Mars was or perhaps is habitable by primitive organisms.  If interested you can watch here http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/ (http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/) from 11:30pm. There won't be much to see, but you might catch the first pictures if you stay up for a couple of hours. Mission is scheduled to last just 3 months at which point the Martian winter will freeze the crafts electronics.

altogether now

god bless america

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

According to the landing schedule, first images are expected sometime between 2:43 and 3:02 BST. Will be of Phoenix's solar arrays to check proper deployment. Hopefully something just a little more interesting shortly after.

Thanks for posting, I'm bummed out at missing this but I'm sure NASA will repeat at some point. Cheers :)
