HI, I just got a new Sony Ericsson W960i Mobile phone and love it to bits, the only problem I'm having is connecting to a wifi network for the internet if anyone knows how to help, 1st i'll give you the lowdown:

My WAP is set up through O2 and works perfectly, but I am on a PAYG tariff(better for me as dont like running up monster bills) so going on WAP costs too much to go on too often.

BUT it does have the capabilty to logging onto WLAN (wi-fi)- I can log onto my home router no bother and use the internet for free on my phone(pointless coz I've got the laptop) but when I'm out and about if a free public wifi network is available it is not letting me log onto the inetrnet(even although it does appear that I am logged onto the internet with the little globe at the top of the phone highlighted) Whenever I try to type in a web address when I am connected to the Wifi public network I get the message: "could not locate remote server"

I think it must be something to do with the settings but dont know how to tackle it- I have put the settings I currently have on the phone below:

I have tried it with various different networks but the one in my work is below:

Account Name: Free Public Wi-fi
Network Name(SSID): Free Public Network
security: None (in my home one I enter the password and it works fine but no security should be needed as this is not a secure network)
Network Mode: ad hoc (this can be changed to infrastructure???)
A d Hoc Hannel: 11 (can be from 1 to 11)

if I go further into the settings I get:

TCPIP >> IP Config : automatically (can be changed to IPV4)
               IP DNS   : Automatically

If I go into proxy settings I can tick: Use proxy server????

if I choose this it asks: proxy server address
                               Proxy server port
                               Proxy Exceptions

I have no idea what any of this is or if its needed as I dont need to do this when I connect through my home router

there is also an advanced part that lets me select power save on/off, and says RTS threshold(256-2347) no idea what this means

This is all complete Jargon to me but i'd like to get it up and working(all gambling and forum sites are banned in my work hence the advantages of having this work)

I have also read the manual- chocolate kettle springs to mind!!! only tells me how to access WAP


Oh and when I have connected to any of these networks I can go into my connection manager and it tells me i'm connected to the network and how many KB have been sent(1.7) and received(14.5) but still the pages wont load- it does say the status is inactive however(i'm guessing because the wepages arent loading)

any techy guys help out there would be much appreciated

Have you turned the handset off and on again, thats what they usually say o0n the helpdesk lol!

Should be set to infrastructure if there is an access point, ad hoc is a network where devices connect directly to each other.

ok I'll try this tomorrow-I'm sure I tried it today and there were some other things that came up which didnt allow it but i'll investigate tomorrow and get back to you...

Yes, exactly my thoughts.

Another thought - it could be the access point has some other form of protection to stop random people from logging in.

Are these access points in coffee shops hotels etc?

Eg the cloud or T-mobile. You usually have to sign up and pay for those.

When using a laptop the browser is 'hijacked' and it takes you to the sign up / log in page. They probably aren't compatible with phone browsers. Contact the hotspot operator, or take your laptop and try connecting / entering the same address that comes up.

This free public Wi-fi spot is next to my work in an industrial estate so no idea where its coming from, but although its free your probably right-a registeration page would probably come up which wont on my phone- damn thought i was being clever in using my mobile for free wifi. I've got a WAP bolt on now on O2(£7.50 pm) but the connection is SOOOO Slow. There probably is a way around getting connected via wifi but just dont know how.

Also the 2 other networks that come up in my work are: livebox-14C0 and printer server and I get the same problem connecting to these
