Villa unveil charity sponsorship

Aston Villa have announced a shirt partnership with West Midlands-based charity Acorns Children's Hospice.

The deal will see the charity's logo being carried on the club's shirts for free throughout the 2008/9 season.

"They look after people of Birmingham and the West Midlands and our fanbase covers that area," Villa's head of community Duncan Biddle told BBC WM.

"They have to compete against national charities for funds and hopefully this will elevate them to that level."

Acorns, which was established in 1983, cares for life-limited children and their families in the Midlands.

The charity has three hospices across the region, in Birmingham, Walsall and Worcester.

Similar to Barca's UNICEF sponsorship on their shirts.

I guess they're financially secure enough not to require a sponsorship deal to generate them revenue.

Would it not have been more beneficial to accept a sponsorship deal from any company then ship the monies across to the charity?

Randy Lerner is worth gazillions, they can do it for as long as he's willing to bankroll it

Free name recognistion is priceless for a charity. Mansion pays Spurs around 8 mill for the Spurs sponsorship (not sure about the exact figure) but say a Villa shirt sponsor would pay 6mill..this could be worth much more than that if the charity handles it correctly.

It goes to show how relatively little the Villa shirt sponsorship deal is worth. This stunt will probably be worth more to them.

Barca PAY €1.5million to be sponsored by Unicef...

So it is nothing like the Barcelona deal.

Except that it's similar in terms of both clubs having a charity on their shirts.
