Title: US open Golf
Post by: chrisbruce on June 09, 2008, 07:12:53 PM
the scene of Karabina great triumph last year when he backed Angel Cabrera.

The big question this year though is Tiger Woods ...... recent surgery on his knee for the third time in his career and he has only played one round of golf since ( using a cart) ....big question mark there.

Tiger woods price is drifting big style on the exchanges currently at 4.5 which is massive for someone who is normally 2.4 when he turns up.

on the positive side Tiger has a great all round game. A master at putting and chipping.

If Tigers knee does bother him he may ease of a bit on the TEE and find a few more fairways as a result which may improve his score ?

I am going to see what happens over the next few days and what news there before I reach for the wallet

Ive had a bet already on Garcia at 27 , Pod at  26 and Weir at 70 on BF over the weekend. With this being Micklesons local course and with the doubts about Tiger I have had a chunk on him at 9.4 too with the idea of laying it back before the start and having a free bet with the diff.

Two that might be best avoided are Adam Scott(laid at 44) who says on his website that he has been ill over the last couple of weeks but has actually got a broken little finger and Cam Villegas who had a virus last week and lost 12 pounds, he was complaining of feeling washed out over the weekend.

Reading Justin Rose's piece in the Times today he commented that the course  heavily favours a fade off most tee's so Mick(hits the left handers equiv of a fade) and players like Ogilvy and Monty should like that, tho not so good for Garcia who mainly hits it the other way.

One bet i have had but could hardly get a bean on was Leonard to beat Toms in a 72 hole match bet, how anyone could make Leonard the evens outsider  in that match must be mad, they have gone 4/5 Leonard and evens Toms now but as they are trading at 70 and 220 on BF. Leonard should be even shorter than that in my book given Toms is considering taking next year off on a medical exemption coz of his bad back and as a real low ball hitter should be totally unsuited to playing on lightening fast greens where the trajectory of his approaches will mean he has difficulty stopping the ball.

Do you ever bet golf spreads Chris??

I'm with you on Garcia Phil, I managed to get some of the 27 yesterday before the price shrunk. I reckon Chapman must have tipped him up in the RP this week.

I've also gone for Fasth who is a very good player of tough courses imo @ 270+, Karlsson @ 110 who seems to be there or there abouts every week presently, and a hunch bet on Davis Love @ 400+ as I remember him saying pre-season that after shoulder surgery he was now fully fit for the first time in years.

Tiger does not appeal to me even @ the 7/2 which is freely available although I would not be that surprised if he were to win.

Last year's £25 @ 270/1 on Cabrera is a rather fond memory :), but he's one to leave alone this year for me.

Good luck everyone.

quite fancy mickleson has a good record here but that is reflected in the market at 8/1, and as i am a greedy bastard i probably won't back him at that price.

i'll have sabbatini 150/1  bold will make him win imo

leonard 50/1
weekley 66/1
imada 66/1

I can't see Tiger easing off any tee's, though he usually makes more use of his long irons off the tea in US open's anyway doesn't he? I'd be more interested in the amount of time he has had on the practice ground than the number of rounds. I'm guessing he'll play this one twice before Thursday. Having said all this I wouldn't back or lay him!!

I'm going for Furyk, Sabbatini & Ames.

That was a superb pick Ralph, I remember on the 10th tee of the final round I had got a pony ew on Ames at 250/1 in running and  pony ew at 100/1 Stricker in running and they were tied for the lead on +4 and neither of them finished in the places!!!

Is Ernie not well?  He's drifted from around 20 to 60.0 on BF.

Is Ernie not well?  He's drifted from around 20 to 60.0 on BF.

He has been in very poor form for a while Silo and his bad form dip coincided with an anouncement that one of his children has autism.

Cheers Bobby, will leave alone.

So far just Jiminez for me.

I have backed Luke Donald at 42.  He likes this course and has done well there previously.  He is also overdue a decent run in a major.
For a couple of e/w outsiders i have gone for Boo Weekly and Andres Romero.

Ive lumped on the Tiger....had a nice result on Holland last night and its all gone on Tiger.

Heres why

Tiger woods at 4.6!!!!!

Just watched his press interview and he (seems) fit and raring to go.

he has played several rounds this week.

This tournament will all be about mental strength as the course will be stupid tough with horrible greens. He is the best at
 hanldling that sort of toughness.

If Tiger is in the top 10 after round 1 his price will tumble big style - take out stake and free roll..........

Good luck with your bets and enjoy

Anyone in the world top 15 to 20 should be less than 50/1 in my book. Thats why he screamed value.

first tee time should be about lunchtime. Not sure what the coverage will be like, expecting alot better than the masters though!!

Title: Re: US open Golf
Post by: bobby1 on June 11, 2008, 11:45:57 PM
1st tee time 2morrow is 3pm UK time, they will play until about 2-3 am every day as I think the final group go out at 9pm UK time on Sunday and US open rounds are usually very long given the amount of trouble/delays on holes.

There hasnt been a play off in this for ages either and with it being a full 18 hole play off on Monday I have a  sneeky feeling there might be one this year.

Final group out at 2242 first 2 days!! I can see some late night's coming up.

Small bet on Bubba Watson @ 200/1.
Quite like golf but never watch enough to see who is in form and that so just one for a laugh.
Read an article about him in a magzine and came across well.

Go Bubba

My outside pick for this is Anthony Kim had a few quid on  75 - 1 on betfair.

Also liked Kenny Perry but he is not on the players list???? Anyone know why he is not playing????

I am pretty sure the 1st tee off time is 7am USA which equates to 12pm here.

Tiger woods is due off at (8am) 1pm uk time -  I will be avoiding all live updates today though so I enjoy the recorded live coverage.

Coverage starts on Sky sports at 6pm which I am going to record and watch once ths missus has gone out and the kids are in bed..........Ahhhhh bliss..........

Campbell Chad @ 150/1
Jimenez M A @ 100/1
Appleby S @ 66/1
Cink S @ 35/1
Singh V @ 33/1

Geoff Ogilvy @ 34
Stewart Cink @ 46
Boo Weekley @ 75

and my "Karabiner" for 2008

Steve Marino @ 550

Quite please with first round with all bets still in with a squeek, Even Marino who was +5 after his front 9 rallied to finish +2. Weekley +2, Cink +1 and Ogilvy -2 all within 5 shots of the surprise joint leaders from the nationwide tour.

Also got a wee bit on appleby, imelman, Els and a rather shady £2 on Colin(I never win ANYTHING) montgomerie at 300-1 on betfair

I fancy Mickelson too but too skinny IMO so not backing him (obviously going to win now)

No I didnt, TBH I didnt think Tiger would peform like that on the last 5 or 6 holes, he seemed to be in more pain the longer the round went on. I am really annoyed at myself that I didnt lay Appleby. I backed him @ 66/1 and couldve layed @ 11.5. My 2 football bets went down aswell yesterday, all in all not the best of days.

Anyone that backed Tiger at around 9/2 will be feeling pretty pleased with themselves.

Tiger just does the extraordinary unbelievable when he needs to time and time again.....Unreal

I am seriously concerned about that leg though.

might be a good time to take a profit??????????

Lee Westwood has been amazing as well.

Title: Re: US open Golf

Yup taken profit on Woods and stuck a few quid on Westwood so I can cheer him on tonight.

A two legged Woods I would let it run but did you see how far right he was aiming to find the fairway on 18.

Just Amazing how one man can bring that much drama to a golf tournament.

Good luck with your bets

Title: Re: US open Golf
Post by: vegaslover on June 15, 2008, 10:54:40 AM
Well the pressure told on a few during 'moving day'
Woods won't give a hoot about how much pain he's in. He's barely been pain free the last few years, just doesn't crow on about like some other players when they screw up.

The odds that were available at the start of the week were abso awsome value on Woods.

Title: Re: US open Golf
Post by: chrisbruce on June 15, 2008, 11:30:16 AM
Tiger will handle the pain better than anybody, but if it effects his playing ability then thats different.

It also gives other players hope when he is not 100%

Take away 2 glorious putts and a chip in from yesterdays round and he would be well back.

I have gone full circle now and have started to lay Woods. Sure if Tiger hits fairways today it will be no contest but he got some big breaks on Saturday with very wayward drives.

On a slightly different theme will Tiger have recovered enough to play in the Open?

Westwood has earned this right and wont get a better opportunity for a major

Title: Re: US open Golf
Post by: Rooky9 on June 15, 2008, 12:00:29 PM
That last couple of hours will remain Sky+'d for a while.

You can't be against Tiger from here surely. The chip in's and massive putts are part of who he is and I wouldnt at all be suprised to see another couple tonight. Added to that I don't really see anyone making a charge at him. Westwood has played great this week and I'd fancy him to play his way to a round of -1 or level - meaning its all in Woods hands.

Hopefully his knee will be good for the first ten and hold out for the last 8. I'm completely torn by who I want to win between those two though.

Post by: chrisbruce on June 15, 2008, 12:57:32 PM
I was very surprised at Appleby's collapse also I thought he had the game to give himself a chance of winning this.

Bottle merchant is a bit harsh though this course has made greats like Mickelson look very ordinary

Title: Re: US open Golf
Post by: Graham C on June 15, 2008, 02:04:11 PM
I've laid my Woods bet off too.  Not through doubt at Tiger, but I run so bad at sports betting so now I have a profit no matter who wins.   I'll be cheering on Jiminez still as I'll rake it in if he wins, but other than that, I'll be supporting good old Lee Westwood.

Title: Re: US open Golf
Post by: Karabiner on June 15, 2008, 06:53:41 PM
There's already a couple or three players have got off to fast starts, -2 or -3 after six or eight holes.

This certainly is not all over, especially if Tiger makes his usual sloppy start (well this week anyhow).

I still have Garcia, Karlsson, Els, Love and Wilson for decent returns although that is before making any bets today...

PS I just remembered that Cabrera was a 50/1 shot going into the final round last year :)

Does anyone know roughly what time this will finish if tiger tees off at 9ish i was thinkin around 1 30 am i wrong here?? Is there live coverage on bbc yeah

Live coverage is only on Sky TV afaik, and I believe that Tiger tees off around 9.30pm our (UK) time which would probably mean a 1.30am/2am finish.

Heath Slocum (good name btw) is currently -5 through 16 holes.

Now if he could finish 3 3 like Tiger did yesterday he would end up with a rather tidy 63.

He probably can. He probably shouldn't.

It should cost him a couple of shots before the end of the round and that should be enough!!

Lee Westwood is so overdue to hole a putt.

He must of shaved the hole 10 times in 2 days without holing anything over 10ft

This has been a cracking US Open, certainly one of the best I think I've ever seen.    Would be great if Rocco could do it, but Woods has been sensational at times.

Never in doubt on the 18th lol.  Would've felt amazingly bad for Rocco if he missed that par putt.

Tiger ftw now.

Tiger: sensational really, on one leg for most of the week. Just an all time great in any sport, a privilege to be around to watch it

18 hole play-offs are the best test, all the majors used to be them, much fairer than 4 holes at the end of the  final day

spot on Rich, that was one of the best tourneys ive watched and a real joy to trade as it was all over the place at times.
Roll on Birkdale and another Tiger win, if his leg is gonna need rest it could well be his next tourney too and we can go thru it all again.;o)

Why?

Four hole, or sudden death at masters, are so biased to the guy who has come from behind to make the play off. Give them a day off and come back the next day.

Mind you, not sure how I'd feel if it was The Open and I missed it all because it was at work! Best make it a bank holiday weekend!

I thought Rocco was cracking value last night at 13/1 when only one shot behind. I bet there was decent money to be made trading wise.

So, Tiger's $5m 'I bet I can win a Major on one leg' prop bet with Phil Ivey came through.

I presume Phil will challenge him to a double or quits bet now.

Expect to see Tiger rock up on the first tee at Birkdale blindfolded.
