Title: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Tuffster on June 19, 2008, 05:36:13 PM This is a question to all the other non-pros on Blonde. What is your main reason for playing Poker, is it because it's profitable, or because you enjoy it?
I was thinking about my game today as I find MTT's more enjoyable but STT's more profitable. The money I make playing STT's tends to either go to my Beer fund or to my live play fund. I much prefer live MTT's as they are the most fun for me, but normally well outside my Bankroll, so my on-line profits pay for that. So what's the reason for the other non-pros out there? Is it; Enjoyment, Profit, Beer Fund or something else? Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: DUNK619 on June 19, 2008, 05:45:53 PM im a losing player and i do it cos im a sicko

Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Grier78 on June 19, 2008, 06:16:36 PM I do it for fun and would put winning a small stakes tournament ahead of a bigger cash where I only came 4th.
I don't play STT's because the optimal strategy is too dull. My main reason for building a bankroll is to play bigger (more fun) games rather than draw money out. Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Graham C on June 19, 2008, 06:31:56 PM I love it, I like making money and like Grier, winning tourneys is something else (especially as I don't win that many) It's more than the money, although it does help to make some now and again.
I'm not sure why I build my bankroll. I managed to get a fair bit (for me) but never moved up in game stakes, I guess I should, but I've just taken most of it out to go towards our South Africa trip in October (semi brag) so I'd have to move back to my current level anyway. I'm going to build again to play bigger tourneys though. I'd like to play some of the large live events (EPT/GUKPT) and hopefully will build towards that. Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: mondatoo on June 19, 2008, 09:53:43 PM I am not a pro and i don't want to sound like a twat here but i honestly believe i am a good player who is better than about 70% of poker players online my results just don't back that up i probably get my chips all in with the best hand above 80% of the time probably closer to 90 tbh.I was speaking to my cousin the other day he's a good player who has won $50,000 by winning 6 sngs in a row he's in double figures on how many live tourneys he's won and i would defo class him as a good poker player, me on the other my biggest cash is £750 in an apat event when my AQ was no good for A10 (tighty do u remember me from this event it was the newcaslte aspers event i remember looking at your note pad as i'd turned away from the table and heard u go aghhhhh and knew that was my tourney over) i've never won a live tourney and never won an mtt of more than 30 players yet he says i'm a better player than he is (he's not the type to humour people he used to always grief me for bein shit which i was) i don't believe anyone can run that bad so i'm totally assesing where i'm going wrong at the moment and doubting everything that i do.
Just realised this post is far to long well done to anyone who could be arsed to read it all ;) Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Newmanseye on June 19, 2008, 09:59:17 PM I am not a pro and i don't want to sound like a twat here but i honestly believe i am a good player who is better than about 70% of poker players online my results just don't back that up i probably get my chips all in with the best hand above 80% of the time probably closer to 90 tbh.I was speaking to my cousin the other day he's a good player who has won $50,000 by winning 6 sngs in a row he's in double figures on how many live tourneys he's won and i would defo class him as a good poker player, me on the other my biggest cash is £750 in an apat event when my AQ was no good for A10 (tighty do u remember me from this event it was the newcaslte aspers event i remember looking at your note pad as i'd turned away from the table and heard u go aghhhhh and knew that was my tourney over) i've never won a live tourney and never won an mtt of more than 30 players yet he says i'm a better player than he is (he's not the type to humour people he used to always grief me for bein shit which i was) i don't believe anyone can run that bad so i'm totally assesing where i'm going wrong at the moment and doubting everything that i do. Just realised this post is far to long well done to anyone who could be arsed to read it all ;) Too late +1 Stick at it mondatoo, you may want to look at situations where you can win chips without having the best hand (just don't go too far that way like me and become a total donkey). The great thing about poker is that you can always improve your game. I had never won a live tournament before I entered the Virgin festival this comming weekend and with a bit of luck I managed to take it down (whats wrong with positive thinking?). Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: kinboshi on June 20, 2008, 09:55:58 AM Poker is fun, but I wouldn't enjoy it if I was losing.
Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Jon MW on June 20, 2008, 10:14:41 AM Poker is fun, but I wouldn't enjoy it if I was losing. Ditto I don't care what level I'm playing at and I don't care about making any kind of wage from it, so I generally play the small stakes games that I know I can beat when I haven't got much cash in my bankroll - and when it builds up I take shots at the bigger games. My priority in poker is to challenge myself to do better, to stay in the game - and to do it for free. Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: EvilPie on June 20, 2008, 11:14:19 AM Online purely for profit, live for profit and fun. Unfortunately I've not made anything online this year because I'm crap.
BTW. Anyone who says they play online poker purely for fun and plays anything other than freeroll / microstakes is a big fibber. Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Acidmouse on June 20, 2008, 11:17:41 AM I have been playing since 98 online and its always been fun. Never had a bankroll, never stressed about winning or losing. Often look at it as fun and cheap entertainment. Overall I am in front, but it wouldn't bother me if I lost small amounts.
Its funny how RED-DOG once wrote most people don't play MTT's to actually win them, i know it sounds strange but I would class myself as one of those people. It passes the time and I enjoy the ride. Nothing better then when I went deep after being staked on these forums last month :) Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Jon MW on June 20, 2008, 11:28:48 AM ... BTW. Anyone who says they play online poker purely for fun and plays anything other than freeroll / microstakes is a big fibber. Unduly harsh I think - I built up some excess cash on Pokerstars a bit ago and spent it on entering the Sunday Million. I had no expectation of winning, I had little expectation of cashing but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of playing it. If I had a job which left me with significantly more disposable income I could easily see myself playing games like this for the entertainment and fun value rather than any expectation of a profit - and I'm sure there are plenty of people who do already fall into this category. Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Claw75 on June 20, 2008, 11:31:36 AM fun. Probably why i've stopped playing online lately!
I love playing live, but simply can't afford it at the moment. Like Mondatoo, without wishing to blow my own trumpet, having had a bit of experience playing £100-£300 buy-in live tournaments this year I think I could make a nice profit on them if I had the means to play them. When I'm rich, I'm gonna do it! Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: Grier78 on June 20, 2008, 06:33:21 PM BTW. Anyone who says they play online poker purely for fun and plays anything other than freeroll / microstakes is a big fibber. I totally disagree, freerolls and microstakes are anything but fun. Title: Re: A Question To Fellow Novices Post by: FuglyBaz on June 20, 2008, 06:49:40 PM I totally disagree, freerolls and microstakes are anything but fun. Agreed My fun comes in playing good, but not as good as me opposition. I just hate playing with people who dont know when to act live. And even online I hate playing with people who dont show proper etiquette. That above everything ruins the game for me. Seems as though I'm pretty much the same as most non-pros.
The joy of playing Poker is interacting with people, laughing, joking, outplaying, outdrawing (and drinking if its a Blonde Bash!), which you don't really get on-line. I enjoy the challenge of on-line MTT play (so long as I can get past the early donkathon, unless it's a decent structure), but much prefer the interaction of live play. I'm pretty successful at on-line small stakes SnG's, but very poor at live play (as I generally find the structures are too fast for my ABC play), so I limit myself to only spending my winnings on live play. I'm never going to be a very good player, but hey, I enjoy the live scene and I'm added value for a tourney so everyone wins! Just need to satellite into a decent 2-dayer now so I can have a go a a tourney with a decent structure!
