Title: What's the greatest gig you have been to?
Post by: Pelham Boy on June 25, 2008, 07:52:44 PM
Last night i went to see the late 80's early 90's indie guitar heroes My Bloody Valentine at The Camden Roundhouse.
It was without a doubt the loudest gig i have been to. They were giving out ear-plugs as you walked in!!!!! The vocals are fairly low in the mix on their records, buit last night they were virtually inaudible over the noise of the guitars. They closed the set with a 20 minute version of their smash hit (lol) 'You Made Me Realise',of which the final 15 minutes were the loudest, most amazing wall of noise. There were people all around me standing with their fingers in their ears! It felt as if i had been hit by a train.

A stunning night.

Kings of Leon @ Doncaster Dome.

amazing night.

also, went to see Placebo @ Blackpool ballroom? or something, which was also incred.

Smaller venues always seem to make it better, more die hard fans usually.

Kanye West in Glasgow, or The Sunshine Underground in Dundee for me.

New Model Army are my favourite band and favourite live act.  Can't pick one particular gig as being the best though.  Going to see them again in December at the Astoria, so hopefully that'll be the best one.

Best stadium gig I've been to was U2 in 1993 at Wembley.  Brilliant show.

The Waterboys at Rock City Nottingham, 1989 ish

Stadium wise U2 at Elland Road around Joshua Tree album time, just before he got very pretentious, rather than allowably pretentious

recently enjoyed Maximo Park at Cambridge, Foo Fighters in Birmingham

Madness, Peterborough Wirrina   late 70's early 80's.   Although top of the bill,i was more impressed by the talent of the support act , The Go Go's.

If Carlsberg did concerts........................

Great venue The Rock City,i had a mate who went to the Poly in Nottingham so i used to go regularly.

A couple of other memorable gigs were,Oasis playing in the bar to about 100 people at The Roadmender in Northampton just before Supersonic was released. And REM at the De Montfort hall on the 'Green' toure.

Blink 182 were pretty good when they were on their last tour of England before they split up.

Then loads of others in small venues have been incred. Wont bore you with all them details though.

Also,
Even though im not a big fan of them, i thought The Streets at Leeds Festival in 06 were incred, put on a great show.

Stipe had a right pop at the stewards for not spraying the crowd at the front with water, he ended up getting bottle after bottle and spraying the crowd himself ... was a blistering hot day, and the best atmo i have ever experienced at a gig.

Then i saw them a couple of years later and they were disappointing, the booze must have had its effect by then.

He was great in the Stone Roses, still couldn't sing, but the whole band were amazing, John Squire is just inspired and there was a great feel to them.

Brixton is ftw, the best venue bar none imo.

Not very PC these days,  but Gary Gltter's Xmas Eve gig in 1979 at Rock City Nottingham was a truly stupendous gig.

I believe it was a comeback tour, and I will always cherish that evening sitting on the shelf in front of the balcony. He was one hell of a performer and the place really rocked that night.

However, showing my age here, I did live in Toronto for a few years during the 1970's, and during my sojourn attended many great gigs including Lou Reed, JJ Cale, Muddy Waters, The Sweet (don't ask), The Ramones, John Martyn and a few that I can't remember  ::)

The one that sticks out in my mind is The Rolling Stones playing Maple Leaf Gardens in either 1972 or 1973 with Bobby Keys playing horns and various other glitterati supporting, but the opening act was Stevie Wonder.

Seen the Stereophonics around 7 times, but best gig was at the scala - 700ish capacity.  Shepherd's Bush Empire a close second.

Also saw the Killers last year in Paris in a relatively small venue - was awesome.

Cheers Kin, I did find that write up but it only kinda skirts around the background of it(strange fact that it has the same chords as My Way tho). The first verse seems to be about a grl getting pregnant and having an abortion, the rest of the song sounds/could be about a string of things the girl see/remembers whilst under the in fuence of the drugs but maybe thts just how I see it and Im not really sure.

Ooohh too many to count.

A few highlights that immediately spring to mind.

Blur (the week There's No Other Way made the charts) King Tuts Wah Wah Hut - Damon swinging from the rafters then getting into a fight with Alex mid-song.

PJ Harvey also at King Tuts - most amazing charisma. Zero movement on stage yet entire crowd were totally in awe of her.

Stone Roses - live in a circus big top on Glasgow Green just after Spike Island. Crap sound, amazing vibe, and the most pungent marijuana aroma ever.

Waterboys supported by Saw Doctors on Hogmanay at Glasgow Barrowlands. Brought a full pipe band onto the stage for the bells.

Another Barras gig was when Simple Minds did a 'cash for kids' charity do and played basically two hours of their singles, going right back to the first album, at a time when they were usually headlining stadiums and playing shite.

Yet another Barras gig. Blur (again) supported by an up and coming act called...Radiohead.

Charlatans at the V festival down in Cheltenham was an amazing gig. Very emotional as their keyboard player Rob Collins had died in a car crash just a few weeks earlier, but they came out and totally rocked the place.

More recently Killers at House of Blues, Mandalay Bay. The homecoming gig just after Hot Fuss had gone mega. Lucked out with that one!

Finally, just to prove I am really getting old. You aint lived til you've seen Tom Jones live. Saw him play an open air gig in Hyde Park a few years ago, and he was amazing. What a voice, and what a performance. Fantastic showmanship.

Hi Phil, I can remember really well living in a flat in Earl's Court with a couple of other degenerate hippy types and our various girlfriends circa 1971 and the first record that went on the turntable (a lenco goldring if memory serves) every morning for months on end was Hunky Dory, usually followed by America, but having listened to Life on Mars many hundreds of times i must confess to not having the slightest clue what it is all about, nor indeed ever being too bothered about it. How shallow we were after a couple of spliffs....

no probs mate, I picked up about 6 Bowie cd's the other day and Hunky Dory was one of em, then I found a Bowie greatest hits for just £7 so put em all back again and stuck to that. Will pick up a copy when I return to blghty.

I also think it would be great to read a 'Red Dog' style diary from you, you always sound like you have lived a bit and loved every minute of it.

Brixton Academy was my local venue through the 80s & 90s. I remember particularly Ian Dury & the Blockheads, The Clash, Divine Comedy, even The Orb, but the best was Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

But the most memorable was Squeeze at the Albany Empire, Deptford.

hmmmm i seem to have lived a sheltered life lol.   Only seen Level 42 (3 times), Cool and the gang, Radical Dance Faction and FarCry (all over 18 years ago - eek)

Oh and got dragged to some crappy 02 concert thing to see some boring ol bloke at a piano - all the women were screaming madly and I just couldnt see it myself - it was a bit slit your wrists music for me.  Jeeze, cannot for the life of me remember who the hell it was now.

Cant wait to see ironside in concert though - thats a must I've heard  ;)

Tori Amos, Shaw Theatre '92 - just her and a piano. Spine tingling.

Prince, Wembley Arena '86 - heck of a showman.

but the best was Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

QFMFT - saw him at Brixton on the Abattoir Blues tour and it was totally mesmerising, he completely pwned the stage.

Other standout gigs for me

Therapy? at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on the Troublegum tour (94)
Supergrass at the Wulfren hall next door (94)
Magnetic Fields at Birmingham Ronnie Scotts (2000)
Flaming Lips at Birmingham Academy (2003?)
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion upstairs at the Birmingham Academy (2003)
Low at Shepherds Bush Empire last year.
A Silver Mt Zion at the Scala (2007 & 2008)

Saw Therapy? on the same tour in Sheffield.  They told the crowd to 'fuck off' when a second (or third) encore was requested.  They said that they were thirsty.

Ten minutes later they were at the bar with everyone else!  Was a good night.

Erm this is a really tricky one.

From a personal point of view, I have to say New Order at the Rock Werchter 05 (Belgium's version of glasto), me and my mates were the only ppl who seemed to have any idea who they were. First time i had seen them and are pretty much heroes of mine, played all the classics inc the joy division ones.

Honourable mentions go to Oasis knebworth and leeds festival 00 (much speculated it would be there last gig beforehand).

Pulp at Sheffield Uni (homecoming gig and all that)

and

Chemical brothers in a monster thunder storm at above Belgian festival, the only ppl left were the hardcore idiot, or the ones who were too drunk to care (me).

Too many to mention....

Particular highlights:

Pogues at the NEC when Fairytale of New York was first at No 1. Loads of youngsters all crushing near the front, Pogues kick off with Sickbed of Cuchulainn and the Pogues fans went nuts - about 300 crying kids trying to flee for cover  rotflmfao

Springsteen at Bramall Lane, Sheffield - last gig of the Tunnel of Love tour, brought Edwin Starr on to sing War.

Runrig at Loch Lomond - was near the front, looked back up the hill to the castle and the whole f*cking place was jumping.

Simple Minds at Ibrox - awesome.

Black Eyed Peas at Glasgow Carling Academy - bought tickets for friends, got left with one which I couldn't sell - was blown away at the concert.

Big Country, the Alarm, the Alabama3 - any time I saw them - always a fantastic night.

I've done so many and for entertainment value I would go for Kid Creole & the Coconuts as they used to put on a real show. I would also go for some of the bands that i went to see before they were famous like UB40/Specials/Dexys/Madness etc. Best thing was that most of these were in small venues so you were close to the bands, rather than being a football pitch away.

But if I had to pick one I would go for Bad Manners at Jenkinsons Cabaret bar in Brighton in 1979. Up on the stage with Buster, superb.

Yeah, reading through this thread I've been struck at how many people have said the best gigs they've been to have been in fields or football stadiums.

Really?

Places where the sound mix is rubbish, where the wind swirls the sounds of the instruments around your head - one minute you can only hear drums, the next you can only hear guitars. Where the performers are tiny little things that can't be seen and you watch the whole thing on a TV where the sound is out of synch with pictures.

Surely gigs where you can see and hear the band properly are going to be much better?

I agree.

My favourite gigs have been at venues that only hold 300-500 people.

I find that even 'big' bands struggle to make a stadium gig truly brilliant.  When I saw U2 @ Wembley in '93 it was a brilliant show - and for a stadium gig it needs to be exactly that.

Title: Re: What's the greatest gig you have been to?

I think stadium concerts are full of people who don't go to many gigs and so don't have the better experience of the smaller venues.

Any gig where a guy standing at the back couldn't hit the lead singer by throwing a bottle has too many people at it.

I get your poiint, and Kinboshi's about stadium/outdoor gigs.

I've been to a few of them & I tend to feel they need to be either a) a great show, or b) a great crowd.

I've seen Springsteen, U2, Simple Minds & Runrig as headliners at Stadium/outdoor gigs. Loved each one for different reasons.

Springsteen - fantastic concerts lasting about 4 hours, sound quality excellent (as you'd expect from a stadium veteran). No special effects/support acts - just the Boss, the E-Street Band & the music. Although Edwin Starr blew him off the stage singing WAR at Bramhall Lane.
U2 - Spectacular show, sound quality poor (Murrayfield has great accoustics for a crowd - too much echo for a gig) - was near the speakers though so didn't suffer the echo effects too much. U2 are great showmen. Support couldn't hadle the venue though.
Simple Minds - at Ibrox - huge 'homecoming gig' - crowd were mental, then the band started with Waterfront & the night went ballistic. I thought the sound was good, and people who listened to it from outside said it was as well, but the atmosphere made it for me.
Runrig - live at Loch Lomond. Another gig where the sound seemed OK, but as the whole crowd were singing along & having fun I don't think it mattered.

I've been to small venues, I love getting up close to the bands for the concerts, but sometimes the sheer spectacular effect of the outdoors gig has a quality all of its own.

The Undertones - Birmingham 1982
The Smiths - Nottingham Concert Hall c 1985

Ive only been to two live acts, one being awesome the other being very disapointing

Awesome = Bruce Springsteen 2008 - Old Trafford
Ive seen some old dvds (and old school vhs) of his, and always wanted to see him live - tbh i dont think there will be a better performer in my life time. He seems to make every concert special for his fans.

Disapointing  = Bob Dylan 2006 (?) - Nottingham arena
He seemed as tho he was there for the money only - turned up, did his bit and nuffiin else - a complete oposite to the boss who tried to interact with the audience. Also i think he has lost his voice a little from the 'old' days!.

bruce springsteen .. i would recommend n e one to go see - i think him with the e-steet band is best tho
