Title: Wikipedia: a little help please Post by: snoopy1239 on June 26, 2008, 03:30:01 PM Having just returned from the World Series, I feel my brain has been overloaded with poker. Watching 20 hours of shootout in one day, reporting seven card stud/omaha hi low events, and doing hand for hand on final - I think my head was moments away from exploding. Even when I ventured through the corridors of a day, the air would be polluted with random stories about various hands that would eventually amalgamate into one foreboding, giant sheet of smog.
In fact, come to think about it, the last two and a half years have been poker, poker, poker with some extra poker thrown in for good measure. I watch, play, work, do pretty much everything poker, and as such have allowed myself little time for anything else. In this sense, I think it's about time I got up to date with the world and gave my brain a much needed wake up call. As a human being, I very much subsrcibe to the philosophy that we should always be looking to learn and educate ourselves. There is a world of information out there, and it's all at our fingertips with the Internet. No longer do you need to go the library to learn, all you need do is boot up your lappie. I really have no excuse. With that in mind, I'm going to be making more of an effort to delve into the pit of knowledge that is Wikipedia and try to broaden my wisdom beyond just poker. However, where the hell do you start? I call out to you, the blonde viewers, to assist me in what I hope will be a daily dose of self-education. What should I be typing into the search? What are the issues that I should really know about? What have you found on Wikipedia that has fascinated you? Can you point me in the direction of any gems? If anyone has any links, please post them... My first stop is Nelson Mandella. It's the 90th birthday today of one of the world's most celebrated figures of our time, yet I know diddly squat about him, which, for someone who is meant to be educated, is pretty bad in my opinion. That's the next week taken care of - gotta read that lot. The Old Osterley Park & Spring Grove Station was my favorite bookshop when I was at school and lived in the area, but i new nothing about it for the entire 20 years I lived in there. So yesterday I found a link from 'London' to 'Underground railway' to Closed Stations' via a slight detour to 'Tunnels under the Thames' Title: Re: Wikipedia: a little help please Post by: Sark79 on June 27, 2008, 09:42:53 PM I recently discovered this site. It isn't exactly a link to something interesting on wikipedia, however it is connected with wikipedia

Title: Re: Wikipedia: a little help please Post by: Sark79 on June 27, 2008, 10:10:01 PM Since my last forum vist, I have been on a cycling holiday up North, slowly recovering from flu, working and watching lots of Cardrunners / PokerVT videos online.
I have tried to make the bird, however the paper I used was rubbish. It ended up looking like a deformed ant rather than a bird Check this wikipedia link out, I tried reading a book about this guy years ago, I wish I had known about wikipedia back then http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton Title: Re: Wikipedia: a little help please Post by: gatso on June 27, 2008, 10:21:16 PM I had the problem with crappy paper when I tried origami so I gave up. normal printer paper's just not up to the job. it's ok for the simple things but I couldn't do the viking ship
Title: Re: Wikipedia: a little help please Post by: snoopy1239 on June 29, 2008, 09:50:46 AM Well, I've read everything wikipedia has to offer on Nelson Mandella and a couple of things in particular caught my eye:
Whilst in prison Mandela undertook study with the University of London by correspondence through its External Programme and received the degree of Bachelor of Laws. He was subsequently nominated for the position of Chancellor of the University of London in the 1981 election, but lost to Princess Anne. A few decades later, MK did wage a guerrilla war against the regime, especially during the 1980s, in which many civilians were killed. Mandela later admitted that the ANC, in its struggle against apartheid, also violated human rights, and has sharply criticised attempts by parts of his party to remove statements supporting this fact from the reports of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.[10] The latter of these two makes me wonder what exactly he got up to. Was he really the angel he's portrayed to be or was he a very naughty boy. On the whole, Mandela was a good man imo. |
