Title: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: new_guy9 on July 03, 2008, 10:01:57 PM Hello all,
I've been searching Ebay and Google to try and find a quality poker set for my home games. I really want to buy a set that will last, but at the same time i'm not looking to spend silly money! Can anyone advise of a good site or store? I really want 13.5g or 14g chips - minimum of 500 chips up to 1000 I think id like a non numbered set so i can set denominations to suit the game. Thanks for your help! New_Guy9 Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: kinboshi on July 03, 2008, 10:10:49 PM :hello:

what do you class as silly money? apart from that stuff they use in Scotland obv Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: new_guy9 on July 03, 2008, 10:25:27 PM lol - have you seen the new fivers and tenners up here - haha
they look like fake Euro's or something! Looking around i see there are decent looking sets for £40/£50 for 500 chips - hitting the old 28 this month so i'd be able to go to maybe around £100-£150 The only sets i've seen so far is a German ebay seller (but those chips are numbered) and also a Poker Million set of 500 which are 6 colours and not numbered (i already bought 5 sets of 25 chips and i like the quality/sound/feel of these ones (13g)) I suppose my ideal budget is around £80 - £100. (inc shipping) Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: ifm on July 03, 2008, 11:15:26 PM I have loads, pm for details.

http://www.poker-shop.co.uk/shop_ngw_gbp_en.html I'd have a look around these places. Might be easier to just buy chips and case separate... Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: new_guy9 on July 03, 2008, 11:45:00 PM Thanks for the info so far - keep it coming lol
I hadn't thought of buying the chips and case seperately. Will look into it. My home games usually consist of 4 up to 7/8 players - what do people think would be the correct amount of chips? I change it every time - sometimes we have 10,000 each but the chip values are like 5,10,20,50,100,500,1000,2000 I don't really know the best structure - we usually play 3 or 4 S'n'Gs in a night. Any ideas on this as well? Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: new_guy9 on July 04, 2008, 01:40:00 AM Thanks for the info so far poker players.
Good night - but keep the links for chips coming! Cheers New_Guy9 Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? I got a table top from them for my occasional home game - really nice quality for the price (less than £30). Didn't get chips from them though. Very good service from them too - answered emails very promptly. Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: new_guy9 on July 09, 2008, 11:53:52 PM Now entertaining the idea of customising a set!!!
(prob with my tat <-- as the design!) Anyone done that with an on-line site? Thanks to let me know! Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: kenjude on July 11, 2008, 05:38:42 AM Why do you want 13.5g or 14g chips? That means the chips are likely to have a metal slug in them and make a metallic clinky noise when they go in. Heavier does not ncessarily mean better. My Chipco ceramics are 10g and that is plenty of weight in a chip.
If you don't want to spend the money for ceramics (of which the Casino Club chips linked to earlier are the cheapest available) or for clay chips (the likes of Paulsons) then there's little point spending any more than it costs for the cheapest set of 500 composite chips for which you can specifiy the colour breakdown. Every extra pound you spend is a pound that could have been saved towards your ceramics or clays. As posted earlier by someone, homepokertourney.com has loads of advice on the breakdown of chip sets. Chip prices for 500: Paulson clays or Chipco ceramics £330 approx give or take a fiver or tenner depending on which design Casino club ceramics £150 11.g upwards composites - don't spend more than £30 - there's really no point and you should consider them to be a homogeneous product at this level - they all do the same job and you'll probably want to change them once you've handled some ceramics or clays. Bottom line - either spend the money on nice chips (get samples) or spend the very least you can spend. There's a lot of ground in the middle which is spending money unnecessarily. IMO of course! Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: new_guy9 on July 13, 2008, 12:31:56 AM Cheers Ken,
Rookie mistake - i thought the heavier the better was the answer. I got samples from http://www.premierpokerchips.com/products/customised-poker-chips.asp?gclid=CJqcuf6-u5QCFQ5THgodmCQGUA and may get some samples of my own made up. I prefer these of the two options; 8 Stripe Customised Poker Chips The new 8 stripe custom poker chip features a 31.5mm customisable face both sides, ideal for lots of detail, numbers, names, etc and is finished in a professional EverWear seal to ensure the poker chips look as authentic as possible and last a life time. Looks like a 500 chip set with case will set me back £240 (these aren't too heavy - i'm guessing 11.5g as it seems most of these sites offer this as the standard weight.) I'll do a bit more research and see how the Paulsons or Chipco's compare. Out of curiosity what is used in the tournaments that are screened on the likes of the Late Night Poker or European open? They tend to have 3 colours Yellow 1000 Blue 2000 red 5000 - are these clay or ceramics? Thanks again for any help/opinions! Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: kenjude on July 13, 2008, 02:03:28 AM Both of those are ABS chips according to the description.
Customised or not, that's a fortune to spend on plastic chips. Essentially I doubt they are any nicer to handle than a £25 set of 500 dice chips from Ebay. 9g to 10g is the traditional casino weight for chips - don't believe what some sellers tell you about 11.5 or higher being casino weight. I don't know for sure but the chips used on the Matchroom 6-seater shootouts (World/European Opens etc) look like and sound like ceramics of some description. Can't remember what the Late Night Poker ones were. marlowpokerchips are the UK Chipco and Paulson dealer. You can buy a samples from them. They have a shop on Ebay and are reputable. Of course these things are all a matter of opinion and choice, but I think you might regret spending that sort of money on ABS chips. If you want customised, I would advise buying the absolute cheapest set of ABS chips that give you the quantities and denominations you need for your game now (there's no need for more than 4 colours in a set of 500 that will accomodate 8 people in SnGs with no trouble - my set has 200x5, 170x25, 90x100 and 40x500). Then save your money until/if you can afford to get clays or ceramics customised. But as I say, it's all down to personal choice, and there is such a thing as chip snobbery. Just wanted to say thanks for all the comments/opinions. I did a lot of searching and thinking about how much i'd like to spend and a good few things were said to calm my desire for really expensive chips. So..... I think i have found a near perfect solution for the time being. I sa a Poker Million set on a few sites for £100 (Case & 500 chips) i already have 125 of these chips that i bought in refill packs cos i had a £20 gift voucher for Greaves! I really like these chips and have used them with my starter set as the "big money" chips lol I googled for the set just in case i could find a better option than the poker sites and lo and behold on cricketsupplies.com i find the same set for £65 inc p&p They arrived today and were exactly as i wanted, i'll now wait till i win the lottery or a big tourney and get custumised ceramics at a later date! Thanks again everyone! Title: Re: Where to buy quality Poker Sets?? Post by: bhoywonder on July 20, 2008, 07:49:04 PM cheers for the tourney new guy last nite
