Title: Customs and Money in EU Post by: plplaya on November 08, 2005, 07:04:55 PM I have heard here something happened to tikay in Moscow while leaving the country with money. I am pretty good with laws and know that Russia is very strict but I did not however know that these rules apply to inter-schengen/eurozone travels. Normally in america I declare after secuity at the customs window before departing. In barcelona before my trip to holland, however I was searched at security and had 50k in euros seized from me. This after I asked check in if there were any rules. I had nothing to hide as this was clean money.
Sometimes the worst beats in poker are in life, and this has been big lesson. This has put me on complete tilt and not only have I thrown off more than 80k since getting here, I find myself going from very nice bankroll to out of poker for a long time in only one week of bad luck. Just a heads up to those that travel with money. Title: Re: Customs and Money in EU Post by: Ironside on November 08, 2005, 07:13:27 PM there should be no problem carrying euros from one EU country to another if you did have a problem i would recheck your receipt
Title: Re: Customs and Money in EU Post by: The Dundonian on November 08, 2005, 07:17:38 PM I think you have been ripped off, there are no restrictions on carrying any amounts of money within the EEC countries, especially not such a small amount
They can of course confiscate it if they think it is illegal or gained illegally, but their must be reasonable grounds!! :redcard: Title: Re: Customs and Money in EU Post by: plplaya on November 08, 2005, 07:27:46 PM Wrong. They didn't believe I was doing anything illegal, in fact they knew many people in poker. The head agent was poker player and had article of isabelle mercier in his office. That didnt stop them from taking my money.
Title: Re: Customs and Money in EU Post by: redsimon on November 08, 2005, 07:35:54 PM I only know from my old job the UK way of working. Yes they can confiscate cash if they don't believe your "reason" for carrying it. They would have to give you a receipt and you could appeal to the Commissioners of HM Customs, an independent body.
We used to get reports of cash over £5K confiscated as part of my work looking into tax evasion and it was amazing the amount of cash folk would give up and never claim back. Guess they had a lot more! You should certainly appeal as you seem to have a "good reason" for carrying that sort of money, i.e a cash Poker player. There are various versions of Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime laws throughout Europe, so it is a minefield. It is not only your reason for carrying the cash, but you may have to prove how you got it in the first place. You should always keep your currency purchase receipt. Nowadays the authorities have carte blanche to do what they like. I got back from Amsterdam today and not only was passport control swiping passports but there was 6 police officers asking questions to random?? travellers. E.g. why were you in Amsterdam? I know we live in troubled times, but I do think it is a bit much to be interrogated when travelling between two countries that in theory don't have any borders. Very sorry to hear about your problem plplaya - I hope you get your cash back.
