It is POSSIBLE that we will be banned from taking our Lappies into the Casino, we had some problems with Casino Holland yeaterday, they ejected all the Press from the playing arena, despite the fact that we were fuly accredited. No explanation was given.

But don't worry - we WILL have Live Coverage, even if either Jen or I needs to stay back at the Hotel, & we have to phone stuff across - blonde WILL cover the Final somehow.

I have just had a drink (Tea!) with Julian & Amanda, Julian is unusually nervous, but that's understandable. He's gone for a kip now, & intends to wander across to the Casino at around 4.45pm. We are only 200 yards from the Casino, staying in the Owl Hotel. Julian, Amanda & I all fly home on the same flight to East Midlands Airport Saturday morning, then Julian is taking me to Coventry Airport, where my car, for some odd reason, is parked.

Here's a hand that Julian playd in the semi-final yesterday, which gives you a clue to Julian's extraodinary game.

He's in very good shape, 16 players left, cruising to the Final, but has not played a hand for 30 minutes or more.

UTG, he finds this......

 Th 7c

A clear Raise, & he does. (Eh.....?).

The flop brings this.....

 8s 9d Ah

So he likes this flop - he's up & down, AND he can represent the A, having bet UTG pre-flop, so he does exactly that, by betting out.

Turn comes, glory be,.......

    Jh

He bets again, still reprsenting the A, & Matey Boy Re-Raises him.

With a flush possible, Our Hero decides to take it down there & then, so moves all-in, & Matey Boy, who either HAS the A or is representing it, lets go.

Lovely stuff!

different class!!

Coventry Airport? a hut and a hangar? tell me more, never heard of it

A hut, a tent, and a bloody great field for the Car Park. True!

It's owned by Thomson Fly, & is their main UK Airport. Amazingly, they fly to around 20 destinations from Coventry, & the Amsterdam flight was jolly cheap. I've flown from there previously, & once you get over the shock of parking the car in a bloody great field, it's actually OK.

Channel 425 have a Sports Betting Programme "live" 3 afternoons a week, and we have just sorted it out that I will do a brief, Live, Phone-In from tableside to the show this afternoon.

The show is on Channel 425, & is called "4/5".

When I find out what time we are going to do the Phone-In, I will let you know.

Correction, the turn was the  Jh, & I have edited my post now, my apologies.

But you miss the point ENTIRELY Greg, I am afraid you have suffered something of a "whoosh". The WHOLE point of showing the hand was to demonstrate Thewy's ingenuity in betting THAT hand, UTG, Pre-Flop, as a means of making something happen. Surprised you missed that one fella....

Anyhow, let's move on, I think he's one of THE greatest players alive, but let's not argue now, we are here in a celebratory mood, not to pick the poor fella to pieces on his big day.

Julians just arrived, & he's sparkling!

Well, we have overcome the first & biggest problem - we are in! I've had a meet with the Director of Communications, bla bla bla, she has apologised that we were spoken to so rudely yesterday, & treated so badly. Next case.

We have been granted limited access to the small & crowded arena for today, including "occasional" picture taking sessions.

So we are all set! The players are being called to the table, but there will be a while yet before they start, as they do the fanfare & announcing thing big time out here.

I have taken a few pics already, & they will be up soon.

Jen has arrived.

Exciting, 'innit?

Lola & Mabel (or is that Mola and Lable?) say hi to their Great Uncle T, Lolas' game is coming on nicely btw, we could organise a 20p freezout next time we all hook up. Mum also sends her best to you, wants you to know that your next Sunday Roast at our place is long overdue. Anyway, glad to hear Ju's nerves were tingling, DEFINITLY a good sign. Add mine and all the family's best wishes, luck & love to the pile of texts and emails already in his corner, wont you. Thanks for all the great work and wishes Tony, Julian couldnt have a better guy on his side.

For the love of God, BRING IT HOME JU!!!!!!!

gotta admire coventry airport, it really is a shed in a field.
The pilots are very skilled getting the planes in there avoiding the cattle.
You get to the place and (because it was a freight only airport for years) you have to backtrack all the way down a country lane round to the other side of the field where you find some old codger with a woodbine playing a banjo (with an ugly kid) who doesn't like "townies".
Good fun though, last time i was there we were delayed for an hour and a half and nobody knew why!!!!

Graham is Thewy''s brother, & Lola & Mable are Grahams two stunningly beautiful & cute daughters. Girls, I beleve.

And "Mum", wow, she makes me THE most beautiful roast dinners, she THE TOPS.

We are all rooting for Julian, and I am sure it's gonna be a HUGE day for poker's nicest bloke. Unashamedly, I am biased, so is Jen. Just for today, I'm sure you'll excuse us.

Play has begun already, and, remarkably, we have an exit in the very first hand! They wrong-footed us slightly, we were not watching, but Jen has gone to get the info. We THINK it was a Swiss Gentleman who has left us so abruptly.

We have a perfect view of a giant plasma screen that shows all the flop, turn & reiver, & "on their backs" situations.

There are NO hole card cameras, & it is NOT being recorded for international TV, but a local TV Company are filming it I believe.

The first out is Rino Mathis - and it was Torstein Iversen who was counting a big pile of chips when I made it to the front of the crowd.  Sorry for lack of detail, but we can actually see more on the TVs in the bar.  So down to 8.

The third hand, Marcel moved all-in preflop, this time without a caller.  They're not hanging about.

I agree Jim.

Marcel has already set his stall out to establish table dominance. Thewy is sitting nice & quiet, he has a difficult seat, with Iverson to his right not letting him take liberties, but that's not a prob.

Our man is OK, & let's not forget Shar Koumi.

Now, we have severely limited access to take pics, & our first booked "pic session" inside the ropes is not due for 35 minutes yet. But you can't beat blonde, so here's a rather heath-robinson effort for you - a pic of the plasma screen we are watching. Now you can see as much as us!

If you reckon it's OK, I'll get some more. Jen has now got the payout structure, give her a mo please.

"good pass JT, good pass. Only play big pots on YOUR terms".......

And he replied (this final table/Live Update texting is surreal!)......

"exactly, thanks bud. 200k, but I can still win it. x"........

Too bloody right he can.

Thewy seems to have a shade over 200k. Total chips in play is about 2,500,000, so average with 8 left must be in the region of 300k. Thewy - don't forget his nick is"yoyo" can deal with that, no prob,

Just had one of blonde corner's 10 minute chats with Sverre Sundbo.  Apparently Team Norsemen manager Woody has flown over to support Torstein.  The rest of them all went out and got hammered and were dancing on some kind of stage last night.  Would have loved a pic of that.  Might have to go with them one time in the interest of journalism...

Can't help but wonder about that AK pass. Was it a "re-steal" by Middleton? We will never know, but I'm glad he passed, as the Thewy can dance with the best of them, and he's not had chance to dance yet. Once it gets 4 or 5 handed, just watch him tango.

Did he really have AK?

Surely a player as aggressive as Julian cant pass Ak here cause the likelyhood the raiser can re-re-raise with AQ Aj or even NOTHING is too high imo.

Maybe it wil turn out to be the greatest pass ever.

Good Luck Julian!

Patrick Bueno doubles up moving all-in with  Ah Ts.  He was called by Shar Koumi with  Qs Qc, but the first card of the flop was  Ad and he won what looked to be around 220k.

Especially looking at the payout structure. Massively top heavy as per norm. And can you imagine if Julian doubles through there! A great player with a big stack.

His last move, by the way, was with 9-9, & some guy passed AK!

come on Jules!

i think the AK is a good pass - the guy limped and then raised all in after Julian had raised - it shouts monster to me and whoever he is i dont think he makes this move at this stage without a hand - Julian would have been at best 50:50 - he can wait for a better spot than that. - good pass

The blinds have been raised to the odd 5,000 - 15,000, mirroring the peculiar trait of Casino Holland's putting 500 - 1,500 earlier.

What do you all think of this?  Personally I reckon the big blind has a bit of a lead weight on him... the pot is nearing 50k by the time it gets to him every time.

Julian wins another pot news now -

He flat calls after Torstein does the same on the button (in the small blind) and three players see a  Js 6d As flop.  Torstein bets out a little, and Julian calls.  They both check the following  Kh Td, and Julian's  Jd 9d picks up the pot at the end.

Patrick Bueno doubles up after the dwell of a lifetime before calling all-in preflop with  Ah Js after Torstein put him to a decision.  He turned out to have  Qc Kd.
The board came down  9c Jh 2d 9s 4s and he took a chunk out of the Norseman.  At least, I think it was him.  Whoever it was lost 100k+.

He called now short-stacked Thomas Middleton's all-in (with  Ac 6d) with a miles-ahead  Ah Js.

Flop:  3d 3s 8h
Turn:   Qc
River:   6c!!

Unlucky there against a desperate all-in-er.

Shar Koumi doubles up - Patrick Bueno raised and called Shar's immediate all-in re-raise with  Ac Jd.  Shar's  5c 5d hit a third on the flop to keep him ahead.

The next hand it was Thomas Middleton's turn to take a chunk of chips off Marcel, whose  Ac Jh connected with the  Jh 2h 4s flop, but ran into Thomas'  Qd Qh.  The chips are fairly flying around.

Patrick Bueno's turn to find  Kd Kc now, and got a caller in Thomas Middleton for 100k on both the flop ( 4h Js 3s) and the turn ( 3c) but they both checked the river and the rather large pot went to Patrick's Kings after all that.  No idea what Thomas could have had to call off over 220k like that...

Sorry, I meant to put an extra spade in that last one... gets a bit fiddly these little cards and all.

They have a 'flop cam' which is the only reason we're getting any detail at all over the monitors.  Rolf is sat in the Ring with the players as befits his special position over here.  I might hassle him for information in the break.

Julian seems to have around 180k. Not ideal, but at these blinds - 5k/15k/2k ante - he's got enough for a while, & he can duck & dive to pay the rent as good as anyone.

I do find the 5k-15k blinds (+ 2k running ante) an oddity - I mean, what would a "standard" raise be with that structure? The BB is almost obliged to defend, too. Not necessarily wrong, just different.

A little quieter now on the final table, but Holland Casino is absolutely heaving - have to struggle through the bar throng, restaurant throng and spectator throng every time I hear the word 'raise.'  The place seems packed all the time.  I can't imagine a more popular government institution.

Thomas Middleton suffers from the 'hoody effect' i.e. when his hood is up he lowers his head and due to the contrast on the screens it looks like he doesn't have a head at all.  Just a kind of hunched black shape.  Patrick Bueno recently gave up his big blind to Thomas after trying to peer up inside it!

Ahh, trust Red to spot by boo-boo. Yes, I meant George Melly.

We are coming up to Dinner Break, so we will see what frame of mind our hero is in. Neither Julian or Shar had had an ounce of luck so far, both have suffered ugly beats, but these things have a  habit of turning round, & I still feel we can bring the money home.

The game has gone all tight, it's Raise & Pass stuff, but it will speed up when we get to the next blind level.

See you soon.

I've just seen M Power's signature, by the way. It looks a bit cryptic, & it is. 11th July was his Birthday, & he spent the entire day railbirding me in the WSOP $1,500. That's love.

Bueno, now huge stacked, makes it 60k. Thewy rapidly says "all-in". Bueno dwells for 23 years, before passing.

In the context of Thewy's stack, that one was critical. He picked up 60k from Bueno, plus 34k of dead money in the middle.

Our man is DANCING now!

Yes, the 10k - 20k blinds with 2k ante make these 'small' pots like the one Julian just picked up pretty big actually.

Jan Sorensen just got one of those in a blinds-only flop of  Td 2d 6c.  He check-raised big blind Thomas' 47k bet and took it down.

Shar Koumi OUT in 7th -

He made a move with his short stack with  8d 9d, and found a caller in Julian with  Ah 9s.  No outdraw this time, and Julian picks up 100kish and knocks out the other British player in the final, who wins €33,000.

That puts The Boy Thewy on, by my rough reckoning, 450,000, which is about average with 6 players left. Next place pays €46,000, but its the €525,000+ our man is gunning for.

The reason Marcel is a little low in chips is the hand where Julian doubled up just after that A6 outdraw.  He'd moved in (thanks to The Camel for the detail) with K9 suited, and Marcel called with AK, but Julian rivered the flush to stay in the tournament.

Graham is right - Thewy is amazingly confident, he told me at the break that he's never felt so focused.

The chip geography at the table seems to have veered enormously, & our man, after suffering a torrid first hour or two, has the momentum going his way now.

And as you know, when our man gets chips, he's a pain, he moves & ducks & dives, nobody knows where they are with him.

At the end of this level, we will get accurate chip counts.

I can't help but wonder what would happen to the last two in this comp, with 1st place paying around €520k, & 2nd €260k. (approx). That's REAL money, & it's fine to say "I don't do deals", but......

Torsten Iverson told me in Baden that "The Norseman" have a "no deals" policy. I've also heard that Marcel is the same, but I'm not sure I believe that - if the deal "suited him", I fancy Marcel would do a deal. Having "no deal" principles is all very well, but just imagine sitting there & playing for THAT amount of dosh!

A good friend of mine rejected a deal two-handed a few years back, lost it (inevitably) & I think he'd "deal" next time.

There has been a succession of pre-flop all-in re-raises which have taken initial raises from Marcel (again), Thomas and Torstein, but Julian's 65k raise on the last hand went unhassled.  They seem to be staying out of his way - accident or conscious decision, who can say...

It's something one is born with Robert, a natural aptitude which cannot be taught.

Well, discounting breaks & dinner, we have been playing nigh on 5 hours now, & everything is goling to plan. Our man had a rocky time during the first few hours, but he's settled now, these boys genuinely look scared of him. Quite right too.

Julian takes a big hit doubling Marcel in this fashion:

They see a blinds-only unraised flop of  3c 3h 4c, and a free turn of  6h.  Then it takes off - Julian checks, Marcel sort of looks like he's about to check and then bets 50k.  At this point the Camel, who was standing next to me, was saying "he's bluffing - raise - raise!" and that's exactly what happened - he moved all-in and was called by Marcel with his  3d 5c.  No help on the river and Julian looks to be the new short stack...

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics Live Update, THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on November 11, 2005, 10:15:23 PM

Am with Julian now, he says he has less than one BB left........

Camel is here too, he was sure Marcel was bluffing, & felt it was a pass or Raise all-in situation. Turned out to be the wrong decision. Bummer.

Still, we are not dead yet.

Julian is furious with himself, but it's a gambling game, he lives on the edge, takes huge chances, thats how these guys get giant stacks.

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics Live Update, THE FINAL
Post by: Djinn on November 11, 2005, 10:16:46 PM
I underestimated Marcel's stack a bit - Julian only has about the big blind and will be making a comeback move or two very shortly... He came over in the break and looks a little downcast, but not a whole lot - and his play has been great throughout.  We have our fingers all crossed that he can double up a couple of times as stranger things have happened...

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics Live Update, THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on November 11, 2005, 10:18:47 PM

Well, we are in a bit of a hole here, but we can expect him to get his little stack in the middle fairly quickly, so he just needs to get lucky with that first move.

And yes, he is all-in, details very shortly........

Yes, I have to agree - ordinarily I would be delighted with covering the players left in this final, but the highlight was definitely Julian who I'm sure, however, will feature in more of this kind of thing in the very near future. One of many final tables.  It's so great to be in foreign lands covering players you actually know and can root for (in a totally detached press sort of way :)   )

But the game continues, so I'll resume my post at the table.  Someone is still going to win the half mil, after all...

OK, here's the crucial hand, & how it played out, according to The Camel, who is with me.

It's Thewy in the SB, he makes up, it's 10k - 20k, with 21k of antes in the middle.

Flop comes....

 3c 3d  4h

Check check.

Turn....

 6s

Julian checks, Marcel bets 50k, Julian moves  all-in for a shade over 300k, Marcel calls, on ytheir backs.

Marcel shows

  3s  5c

Julian shows

 5d 9d

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics Live Update, THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on November 11, 2005, 10:51:54 PM
I never actually saw this, but rumour has it that when Thewy checked the turn, Marcel raised his hand as if to tap the trable (check) then appeared to change his mind & bet 50k.

I can't confirm this though, as I never saw it. And it makes no odds anyway, I guess.

Since Julian's elimination, there have been a series of flops seen by the blinds and a couple of skirmishes thereafter, but nothing terribly interesting, to be honest.  Julian bought me a pint for some reason so I might just watch it from a distance for a few minutes... what a gent he is.

A  sort of gloom has descended over our lttle corner here. All the Thewites, his band of fans & cneerleaders, are all coming over here & consoling each other. Julian does not seem too bad, but I know he's hurting inside. But just say the word "Reuben", (his 21 month old Son) & he smiles straight away. Life's still good.

Thanks for yor kind comments everyone.

Chilli, you said Thewy was a star -  what about me?  :(

Meanwhile, in that weird way life has of slamming one door in your face, only to open another that leads to happiness, word comes through via The Camel that El Blondie is up with the Chip Leaders in tonights €300 rebuy.

So, like the turncoats we are, it's "come on Dave".....!

It looks like Jan Sorensen might be the leader now after an odd hand with Marcel Luske - Marcel called a raise preflop, then 100k on the  Jh 4c Ah flop, 200k on the  6d turn, and passed when Jan moved all-in on the  7c river, showing  Kh Th.

Chip counts (estimates only off the monitors):

Jan Sorensen    1,000,000
Marcel Luske       550,000
Thomas Middleton  600,000
Patrick Bueno       450,000

The blinds are now going to 20k - 40k with a 5k ante.  As I came back to report this (the only real action on the table has been Patrick Bueno moving in over the top of Marcel's 120k raise and taking it) Marcel somehow went OUT in 4th!!

I will ask around for the detail....  I imagine the home crowd are a bit disappointed that he's only won €85,800

Mad Yank - I'm putting you on a "No Speak" penalty for 30 minutes. That'll hurt.

I've just gone back to the Hotel with Amanda & Julian, he's OK. Taxi early tomorrow morning to the Airport, and it all starts again at Blackpool next week.

Marcel is OUT -

After his stack was hurt in the last two reported hands he moved in with his 160k on the big blind with Q3.  Jan Sorensen woke up with pocket Jacks, however, and they were good.

The last three players all look like they have pretty big stacks of pink and green chips (or, peach and mint, to give you an idea of their pastel gloriousness) so I have to guess that Jan Sorensen has the chip lead with around 1.25 million chips.

Have a nice time doing those Yank...

Update courtesy of Sverre now - the final three players have had a chat in the break, the outcome of which was that they'd all take €267,000(!) and play on for €124,000.  Looks like all the 'no-deal'-ers are out already.

And in the €300, it appears that our Dave is leading the field, with around 80k.

And Nick Gibson, aka Nottinghm Nick, has  been joined by the delightful Anna, aka Maid Marion. Nick is not far behind Dave, so that'd make an interesting heads-up duel.

Dave WAS due to fly home in the morning. Let's hope he has to cancel that early flight to play the Final.

Jan Sorensen OUT in 3rd -

He lost the lot over the course of two slightly unlucky hands:

Hand 1:  Jan got it all-in with  Js Jh against Thomas Middleton's  Ad 5c.  But the hooded one spiked both the Ace and the 5 taking over half of his chips.

Hand 2:  Patric Bueno raised to 100k, then called Jan's all-in re-raise with  Qh Th.  Jan showed  Ks Ad.

Flop:   3h 2h 9s
Turn:   Ac
River:   6h and that flushed him out.  Lucky they made that deal, then...

The heads up battle between young Thomas Middleton and slightly less young Patrick Bueno has started off fairly slowly, although they both seem to like to see a flop or two... the last one won by Thomas' all-in on the flop.  They are still playing for six figures, mind you, so I'm not too surprised they're taking their time.  You watch, now I've said that, it'll all be over in five minutes.

Here's the last two survivors in a rather dark picture. The "plaques" on the table represent the Prize Money. Plastic is the way these days, it seems.

Thomas has just won another sizeable pot and is slowly gaining the chip lead.  Just heading down to take a peek at the stacks and estimate by how large a margin.

And despite this pic being rather blurry, I am sure many of you will recognize this young lady, who is Austria's stunningest dealer. My hand must have trembled just as I took the pic, can't think why. I think Junior may have a comment to make about her, but I'd rather he kept it off forum. I have not seen her since Vienna in the Spring of this year, but this evening she came bounding up to me & gave me a big hug, then said "whatever happened to your hair"...... Told her, I'm a sex symbol now. She giggled, in an admiring way.

Jen,

Do you think the deal has changed the play in any way?

How much was the call with q 10 above for?

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics Live Update, THE FINAL
Post by: Djinn on November 12, 2005, 12:53:10 AM
Patrick just won a 400,000 pot on a board of  Ad 3c Tc 9d As, having called 100k on the flop and 200k on the turn with the 10.  Which was good.  Back and forth...

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics Live Update, THE FINAL
Post by: Djinn on November 12, 2005, 01:00:45 AM
bobby - I am inclined to believe that it does affect the way they have been playing (and how some players react in general once the really great pressure is off them, or they feel that it is), especially in that instance - I couldn't see exactly how much the call was but I'd reckon around 200,000, as Jan's stack had been pretty much halved the hand before.  So not a giant mountain of chips, but Patrick called pretty quickly, especially considering how, well, considered he has been on this final table, really taking his time.

Title: Re: Amsterdam Master Classics Live Update, THE FINAL
Post by: Djinn on November 12, 2005, 01:03:14 AM
And I'd just like to add that Thomas Middleton was raising all in with little Aces before any talk of a deal...

And it's all over!  Thomas Middleton has won the Lido tournament and (ostensibly) €528,000, with Patrick Bueno in the runner-up spot.

Having been sat having a chat with the Camel for 20 minutes, no sooner had I wandered back to the final table when Thomas Middleton raised to 200k, then called Patrick Bueno's all-in with  7c 7s.  Patrick held  Ad 5d, and although the  3s 3d 2d looked promising, the turn and river came  6s Kh and made the 21-year-old hoody afficionado the champion.

So - there's some kind of award ceremony taking place now, which (I hope) Tikay is off getting pictures of.  But you saw those shiny, shiny plaques, and that's what they get.  There were a couple of grey boxes by the table which I reckon might hold little trophies, too.

Meanwhile, in the Rebuy, there are 11 players left, playing down to 9 tonight.

Chip leader is Nottingham Nick with 110k, & chip second is El Blondie, who has 95k.  Ian McDonald, from Notts, is still in there, too.

It looks like yet again the action here has finished so late that we're heading for casino-closing time and may not get to experience the delights of cash games or extended loitering (which I could do with as my flight leaves at the ungodly hour of 7:20).  Ah well, we'll keep an eye on Comp Two and hang out for a little while.  Thanks everyone for your fantastic support, especially of Julian.

No help on the river and Julian looks to be the new short stack...

phew, just caught up, does anyone know what Julian's card were here?

ps, great updates guys

Hi red,

Thewy's cards were  5d 9d

Clearly, the idea was that Marcel passed to the RR. As it turned out, Thewy had, I think, 8 outs to split the pot.
