Title: Scrapping a car Post by: Jedwick on August 12, 2008, 02:01:47 PM Hey all,
I have just got a new car as my old one is in pretty bad condition and has ran out of tax and MOT, i was just wondering what the procedure for scrapping a car was and how much i could expect to be paid for it as i have heard the price of scrap metal is going through the roof! any help would be appreciated! cheers Title: Re: Scrapping a car Post by: TheChipPrince on August 12, 2008, 02:03:54 PM My grandad got a quote for £150 a tonne for scrap last week, he's chuffed with £300 for an old range rover!

Seems like a nice return on a pile of junk.I have just got a new car as my old one is in pretty bad condition and has ran out of tax and MOT, i was just wondering what the procedure for scrapping a car was and how much i could expect to be paid for it as i have heard the price of scrap metal is going through the roof! any help would be appreciated! cheers Title: Re: Scrapping a car Post by: EvilPie on August 12, 2008, 04:23:02 PM Depends how much time you've got on your hands.
It's always worth ringing round the scrap yards to see who will offer you the most. Some may collect for free. It's sometimes worth taking the battery off and selling that if it's any good or taking it to a tip. The scrappy's may charge you for battery disposal. Never done this myself but our office dude is a wizard at it. He got us £250 for a knackered old van which they collected. I work at the local End Of Life Vehicle Depollution Facility (breakers yard) and we are paying £60-£150 depending what car it is 2-3 weeks ago it was £100-£300 Title: Re: Scrapping a car Post by: reenot on August 12, 2008, 05:52:53 PM Also make sure you get a COD (certificate of destruction), that way you get no comebacks if they sell it on again.
Title: Re: Scrapping a car Post by: technolog on August 12, 2008, 09:14:30 PM I got £157 for 1.48 tonnes of P reg Mondeo estate about two weeks ago. You need to take your V5(? - log book) which they keep apart from a portion that is returned to you which you need to send to DVLA.
And no. I wasn't in the car when they weighed it. Title: Re: Scrapping a car Post by: kinboshi on August 12, 2008, 09:21:35 PM I got £157 for 1.48 tonnes of P reg Mondeo estate about two weeks ago. My sister cars conked out a week ago and was towed to the garage who declared it officially dead. He said he has a friend who will get rid off it for the price of a couple of pints. She put it on ebay hoping to get a few bob for spares, should she put a reserve on it as it is currently at £10.50? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-ESTIMA-ENGINE-SIEZED-FOR-SPARES_W0QQitemZ190243542522QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item190243542522&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1318 Title: Re: Scrapping a car Post by: reenot on August 13, 2008, 11:29:26 AM Seems a lot of people forget about oil in these cars we have 6 of them at the moment all with duff engines.
Too late to put a reserve on it but worth bidding yourself and then getting your sister to end it early with you as winning bidder. Then ring up a local scrap collector and she should get at least £100 for it. And maybe she should think about using a different garage! I don't think many people are aware of the value of scrap cars. I certainly wasn't. As always it is supply and demand that affects the prices. 3 years ago you would have to pay around £40 to scrap a car as scrap value was very low, but the relentless demand from China and India for steel pushed prices up 6 fold but prices have started to drop, maybe because the Olympic building has finished? Title: Re: Scrapping a car Post by: suzanne on August 15, 2008, 01:19:11 AM Good news was she got £155 for it on ebay.
The bad news is the guy got in contact and she spent about £15 in phone calls trying to sort it out. He needed something to be disconnected to be able to tow it away, the garage said minimum £40 to do this on top of what he is already charging to look at it in the first place. She ended up getting in touch with a scrappy who is giving her £120. So with ebay charges etc she might break even LOL |
