Title: Home remedies
Post by: PocketLady on August 25, 2008, 12:12:43 AM
Ok, so it's Bank Holiday Weekend and obviously my tooth that I have seen the dentist for about 3 times in the last month has decided to swell up to a massive size because there are no dentists around.  I was supposed to have a root canal done about 3 years ago, but because I have an extreme aversion to going to the dentists I left the temporary filling in and did nothing about it until a few weeks ago when I was in complete tear-inducing pain.  I was given some antibiotics for it as they thought I had an infection, which I took, and he redid the temporary filling for me, but the dentist I saw was crap so someone recommended a dentist to me in London who I went and saw last week for what I thought was a check up.  I told him the tooth was still giving me problems but he decided the best course of action was to give me a scale and polish and make me book another appointment to have an X Ray etc, which isn't for another two weeks.

I woke up this morning with a face the size of a balloon and I think I must have an abscess in the gum just above my jawline, as now it hurts everytime I put pressure on the original tooth AND the one next to it.  The swelling is visable just looking at me.  As I'm probably not going to be able to see a dentist until at least Tuesday I just wondered if anyone knows of any good home remedies for dental abscesses.  I've done a bit of googling and found out that if you go to sleep with a teabag in your mouth on the infected area then it can bring out the infection.  Does anyone else know of anything?  I'm sat here with a needle at the moment ready to try and drain the abscess myself because I know if it the pain gets bad like it has done before then I won't be able to stand it...

Vodka or any high alcohol is good too, whichever you prefer.

Whenever I'vehad an abcess I put a needle in a flame, let it cool, then lance it = instant relief

If you have a strong prescription painkiller, try that (always follow the instructions) until you can get to a dentist.

The reason a dentist wont pull at tooth with an abscess under it is because of the risk of introducing infection into the bloodstream.

If you start messing about sticking needles into abscesses in your mouth, you just might wake up dead.

I know you said the first dentist you saw was crap, but I don't rate this second guy either. Two weeks for an x-ray appointment?? The dentists can take x-rays there and then - it takes 5 minutes.

That's spot on most dental surgeries have X ray's on site these days ( my company build and install the equipment in dental surgeries), if you are a private patient let me know the area you want to have treatment and I will see if anyone I know is in that area.

No it's kind of my fault.  I live in Northampton and this dentist is like 2 hours drive from me.  The reason I'm travelling so far is because he is the first dentist who has ever even bothered to try and put me at ease and explain things to me a little, and he is very understanding of the fact I am terrified.  I booked the appointment for 2 weeks to coincide with my next visit to London, as I assummed that because he had given me a scale and polish over x raying this tooth in the first instance that it wasn't that urgent.  If it was surely he would have done something about it then, but obviously not...I'm intending to ring up first thing on Tues to see if he can fit me in this week.

Been on the JD all night, didn't have any vodka.  It's not too bad at the moment but I know I'll wake up in the night in absolute agony...gonna try this teabag thing.  You're supposed to go to sleep with it on the infected area, so I'm just hoping that the bag doesn't burst in the night or I don't choke on it or something...

Yeah I'm not too happy about having to do this and it will be an absolute last resort...It's probably not the best idea but when I have toothache I normally want to be dead anyway...Will take all the best hygiene measures I possibly can and get to a medical person of some sort asap who can give me something to stop/prevent infection.

You could also ring NHS direct today to check if any local hospitals have an emergency dental department, it's usually a walk in service.

Red-dog is right, straight up A&E, they'll drain it for you quick and easy but get it sorted now, couple of people who i know who've had the same problem and looked like they had a golf ball in their mouth have gone straight up the hospital and had it sorted in a couple of hours(bank holiday though so might be a long day).

definitely dont start mucking about with in yourself, could lead to big trouble.

I had the same thing a couple of years ago, i had to have a root canal and they put in a temporary filling and it felt pretty good i didnt bother going back, it was a tooth right at the back as well so i didnt care that much but over the years the tooth has slowly come apart and the filling gone so whats left of it will probably have to come out, GG tooth.

when my nerve on the tooth first became exposed the pain was so bad i was laying in my bed banging my head against the wall to try and divert the pain somewhere else then i went to the hospital and all they gve me was shitty co-codamal(bastards wouldnt give me any of the really cool painkillers though) ::) so i went home and drunk some vodka and got the filling done a couple of days later.

warm salt water is what ive always been told as phatoch said

good luck

Also rather handy is the Hydrogen Peroxide solution (for oral use) that you can buy from Supermarkets / Pharmacies . Handy y tip is to mix it with mouth wash. It's what my dentist recommends after I have had bone and gum transplants - so is pretty good at killing any sort of infection IMO.... Taste bloomin awful tho

Bone and gum transplants? That's just too good a line to leave sitting idly in the middle of a sentence. Details please.

Sorry PocketLady, your abscess will have to go on to the back burner while we get to the bottom of this.

Lol my family were not blessed in the genetics dept when it comes to teeth etc.

My father has an entire mouth of implants and i need a fair few unfortunately... But to have implants one needs the bone to screw them into.... Another genetic failing - and then you need to have gum to cover the new bone - which again i didn't have... So as all good womem do - I shop! Found some great bone and gum at the dentists - and made some pretty fine choices lol - even if I do say so myself.

For  the less squeamish - it's amazing.. Transplant bone is like bits of honeycomb in a red mesh which you simply lay on the original bone and hope that they take, Then the gum is like the thinest slither of sashimi with is stitched on top.

God its amazing

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago PocketLady and the best pain suppressant was to take paracetemol and ibuprofen alternately every couple of hours. Mine also happened at the weekend and this is what I was advised to do by the emegency dental helpline, and it certainly helped until I was prescribed the anti-biotics which evenyually cured the abcess.

OK this is very interesting for me because I had some bridgework done recently. I was told it would last between 1and 10 years but then my best course of action would be implants. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.

Where are you having the work done and are you happy with it?

Can you wear something temperairy while you wait for bone-grafts/implants to heal?

Is it so expensive that only a woman of your stature/status can afford it?

A full set of implants in the UK £20k-£25k - this is in my future since i'm losing all the bone as fast as a fast thing.

BTW, pocketlady - I'm feeling terrible about suggesting draining your own abscess since others mentioned it as being very dangerous. I've done it so many times it didn't occur it could be very bad for you.

Note to self to never post on medical things again

I'm voting for the A&E option.  Even if they don't do anything proper to help, some of the non prescription pain killers they've got tucked away are magnificent.

For scardy people like me

I get temporary fillings from boots and fill me own teeth.

The kit is ready mixed and costs about £5.

this lasts for about 6 months then you have to top it up.

The pot has enough filling for 3 or 4 goes

Use pain killers to stop the pain then clean out the hole with hydrogen Peroxide
on a cotton bud, let it dry , or use another cotton bud to dry it.

pop the filling putty into the hole and wait an hour before eating or drinking

hope this helps

Lol

I'm getting it done in Florida - and ecstatic by all the work so far.... The reason why i get it done so far from home is...

a) Get a holiday
b) Get it at a discounted dollar - although that plan is quickly heading south
c) Have greater protection / compensation should they screw it up.

Yes you can - I have a Maryland (SP?) that i can have stuck back in almost immediately - give or take an hour.

I won't lie - it is expensive - but IMO worth every penny so far.....

Well I woke up today and am still pretty swollen, but I managed not to wake up in the night in complete agony so that's a start.  It doesn't look pretty but I'm not in any pain at the moment, so I'm hoping I'll be able to hold out til tomorrow when everything will be open again.  If the pain starts again then I'll head up to A&E but I'd rather avoid sitting around for 5 hours in a hospital if possibly, will be so busy today as everyone who would normally go to their doctor will be in A&E.  Thanks for all the advice guys.  I especially love all the people telling me to drink lots of alcohol.  Surely that must be the best answer!  8)

Yeah I have used this before for emergency fillings and the like.  Problem is that I don't actually have a cavity or a hole in my tooth anymore since the dentist filled it again, just have something pretty nasty under my tooth now...ewww.

It's really shocking actually.  I was doing some research online yesterday for home remedies and I found a couple of threads on some forums, but the posts were all by Americans who could not afford dental treatment and who didn't have medical insurance.  So many of them were all having to do their own dental treatment as best they could because they simply couldn't afford to go to the dentists.  And I don't just mean for emergency treatment.  They were doing it long term.  Some of them had had like five abcesses in the last year and not received dental treatment for any of them, and had drained them themselves.  In this country if we need emergency dental treatment we can get it on the NHS for about £10, or free if you are on any kind of benefit.  I mean I hate the dentists, but I definitely feel lucky to have that access if I need it now.

You can get them all pulled out and a set of badly fitting dentures for free, anything worth having you still have to pay for.

Yeah, last time I went to the dentist before all of this (three years ago) I had to have IV sedation to knock me out.  I tried to find a dentist who would do it on the NHS and I did eventually find a practice who said they did it on the NHS.  I turned up for an assessment where he obviously told me he wasn't doing it on the NHS anymore and it would cost over £300.  I was terrified and needed treatment really badly so I coughed up for it.  He was very kind and fitted me in the next day on his lunch break.  I wonder why...

i couldnt get an appointment last year, when a did get in to see the dentist i mentioned i was thinking of using temporary fillings, his advice was never use temporary fillings you likely get the tooth infected, you have to go in the end, best just to try and get in as soon as poss

the local dentist took one look in my brothers mouth and while rubbing his hands together with glee said,"by the time i`ve finished you`ll have a smile like Tom Cruise"
the dentist is a big character round here bit of a wideboy and knows exactly what he can milk the nhs for.
