Title: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: GlasgowBandit on August 25, 2008, 07:51:40 PM Well folks its only a few days now til the all important draw for the group stages of the UCL so who do you want? Who do you want to avoid and who do you think will win this years competition?
For me I want to avoid going back to Barcelona, Milan, Doneskt and Lisbon - bored of these places. For the budget I'd be happy to take on an English side - preferably Arsenal or Liverpool. I also fancy a trip to Turkey or Greece this year. And I do enjoy going to Germany, Holland and France for the football so would gladly take a team from one of these countries. As for the winner, I reckon Barcelona will go well under Guadiola this year and think they could go all the way. Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: sweet potata! on August 25, 2008, 11:34:10 PM I would have to say , chelsea will be very hard to stop winning the PL and CL this season. On paper there squad is awesome , with plenty of depth i mean cmon Ballack , Lampard, Essien, Deco ,Obi mikel (meh), not half spoilt for choice there , also Cashley cole and Bosingwa raiding the wings has alot of potential too.
They should go very close for the lot this season IMO Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: The Baron on August 26, 2008, 12:43:52 AM I would have to say , chelsea will be very hard to stop winning the PL and CL this season. Man u are similar but they have a rock solid defence, minus the keeper, to help stay in contention.
Chelsea have taken another step forward this summer and most other top clubs have stayed still, if not gone backwards like barca. Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: Matt50 on August 26, 2008, 03:03:32 PM I fancy Real Madrid to do very well in it this year.
They looked very impressive towards the end of last season, although the injury to Snejider and the probable sale of Robinho will not help. But van der Vaart is a good signing and if Raul and Van Nistelroy stay fit they could go very close. Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: kinboshi on August 26, 2008, 04:08:16 PM Liverpool haven't qualified yet... But they will. won't they? Not if they play like they did in the first leg. I just don't think they will do it.
Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: kinboshi on August 26, 2008, 06:57:11 PM Liverpool haven't qualified yet... But they will. won't they? Not if they play like they did in the first leg. Surely it is not physically possible to play as bad as that I'd sincerely hope so. We haven't been playing brilliantly in the first two premiership games - lucky to have 6 points really. Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: Div on August 27, 2008, 04:30:50 PM For me I want to avoid going back to Barcelona, Milan, Doneskt and Lisbon - bored of these places. Agree with you from the Celtic perspective that getting the same teams is becoming a bit boring. Been saying for a few years that we are overdue a game with Real Madrid. Pot 2 has the look of having lots of teams we are capable of beating 1-0 at CP and losing 3-0 to away ::) Much as it pains me, pot 4 looks most significant for us. Shakhtar and Spartak are better than 'genuine' pot 4 teams, whilst the likes of Cluj and maybe Borisov look like guarantees of at least UEFA Cup football after Christmas. Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: GlasgowBandit on August 27, 2008, 06:53:47 PM For me I want to avoid going back to Barcelona, Milan, Doneskt and Lisbon - bored of these places. I lwouldn't mind Madrid to be honest. I fancy the Bernebeau for a Celtic game. I don't think I will make all 3 games away this year, struggling badly for cash and the gambling/poker hasn't been so kind :( So I hope that we get a decent draw I can go to somewhere different failing that I'll settle for a trip to Germany. Something is clearly wrong within the team and it's showing rather appallingly at the moment.
I am praying for Javier Mascherano to come back into the team, he brings so much stability. Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: Hairydude on August 27, 2008, 10:18:27 PM Liege have looked a decent side but in all honesty with your squad you should be able to wipe the floor with them

From a football perspective it could have been better, but it also could have been worse. From a social perspective it looks sound :D There's actually a Villareal Celtic Supporters Club - a legacy of our last tie versus them. Rod can elaborate on that one. Bit disappointed to have another couple of return matches v recent opponents, but it's good there are no trips to the furthest corners of Europe. Pretty sure all English clubs will be comfortable qualifiers but there's usually one that makes hard work of it. Still think Chelsea FTW. Title: Re: Champions League 2008/09 Post by: Hairydude on August 28, 2008, 10:02:35 PM I agree mate I think its a decent draw for Celtic- avoiding games like having to travel to deepest darkest ukraine or russia in november were what I was hoping for to be honest but I reckon you have a real fighting chance of getting through this (unfortunately). Aalborg should be a banker and at the very least 4 points out of 6, then you just have to contend with villareal for 2nd place as I think manure will get stronger before this starts. at least you avoided the 4 stronger teams from pot 4- those 4 are better than most of the teams in pot 2.

The first away game is a little too early and I am away on Donegal for the Celtic festival. Managed to find a flight from Shannon Airport to Alicante for 15 euro which is really good and Alicante is not too far from Villareal. But Shannon is a bit of a hike from where I am in Donegal so that idea has ben scrapped. Looked at doing a week in Benidorm trying to fly from Belfast or Derry but the costs aren't the cheapest, infact probs cheaper flying from Glasgow. For the other game in Denmark I have never been to Allborg before, don't think we have played them before but pretty murderous trip. Myself and seven2unsuited were looking at a number of crossings last night including flying to Germany, Spain, France and Sweden and getting a connecting flight but the times of connecting flights were miserable. But where there is a will there is a way the Saltmarket CSC will have a bus going to all 3 you never know, maybe I'll end up on that.
