Hi, i'm after a bit of advice please.

I've booked a 'PADI Discover Scuba Diving' course for my son (11yo) and me. With the aim of starting to do some dives when we have the right skills and we've got the required qualifications. Has anyone got any diving experience that will help a complete novice and any tips with regards to taking my son.

My advice would be to make sure no one takes any pics of you in a wet suit ... BUT if they do, we MUST get to see them :D

I tried scuba diving on holiday and I loved it. No tips though I'm afraid, when I had a go I became totally mesmerised by all the sea creatures and would have been still heading out to sea if the instructor hadn't stopped me.

No real advice cos I'm a mega beginner...but just tried it on holiday for the first time and thought it was really cool.

Would love to go somewhere exotic and do it...I was in Lanzarote lol...

Sigh --  I had arranged to go with son of duke a couple of years ago but we didn't in the end - however I have the PADI books and stuff and you are welcome to them.

I took my PADI course while backpacking round Oz about ten years ago, took it my quals to Divemaster level and had the best job of my life working on a dive boat on the barrier reef for a few months. Ahhh them were the days...... ahhh the female students.......

I still dive when I am on hols but not in the UK, too flipping cold. As for diving with your boy, just try and make sure you take him when the weather is as nice as possible, a swell in the sea could put him off for good. 11 seems a bit young to me, (not for safety or anything, just not sure if he will enjoy it. Depends on his confidence I guess).

From memory I dont think you can do the Padi open water cert until 15 yrs old, so he wont be able to do much more than discovery dives which are only 5 or 6 mtrs.

Not trying to put you off, but I dont think he will be working on any deep sea oil rigs for a while yet.

Thanks Duke, That's a really kind offer. Our first 'taster' is tomorrow so we'll go to that and take it from there. Hopefully it will be a success and we'll be needing books and more advice!

Thanks mate. We're not looking to start our voyage to the depths just yet. Just a wee adventure and hopefully some good father son time. Hopefully i'll be picking your brains over the next few months though..

My daughter was 12 when she did her PADI open water and advanced open water certificates, so it can be done earlier than 15.  That said, she is half fish and was far more at home than the old man struggling alongside.....

The only restriction I recall was that she was restricted to the open water cert. depth limit of 18 or 20 metres, rather than the 30 metres that the advanced open water cert. qualifies an adult to dive to.

Ive done my open water and my advanced. Loved it from the first moment and try to go on a regular basis. Are you planning trips away or UK diving? Not really clued up about the UK scene, too cold for me, lol. Ive heard that egypt has some pretty cool diving, but I cant speak first hand. If you ever venture Oz/asia way gimme a bell and I can reccomend some phenomenal dive locations. Hope you enjoy it, take it easy

Cheers pal. No plans for any trips yet until we see if we like it!! We're probably going to the caribean later in the year (cpc) and that would be a good place to get a bit of warm water experience i expect.
