Title: any two cards
Post by: The-Crow on August 28, 2008, 02:30:05 AM
Hi guys,

Have read that there are 169 possible starting hands
 if you don't count suited cards.  ie  13 times 13 = 169

but as ace 3 is the same as 3 ace , then there are
 only 91
different starting hands (the ones on the lower left)

and 78 reversed hands (the ones on the right)

AA ..... 2A  3A  4A  5A   6A  7A  8A   9A   TA  JA  QA  KA
A2  22 .....  32  42  52   62   72  82   92   T2  J2  Q2   K2
A3  23   33 ..... 43  53   63   73  83   93   T3  J3  Q3   K3
A4  24   34  44 ..... 54   64   74  84   94   T4  J4  Q4   K4
A5  25   35  45  55 .....  65   75  85   95   T5  J5  Q5   K5
A6  26   36  46  56   66  ..... 76  86   96   T6  J6  Q6   K6
A7  27   37  47  57   67   77 ..... 87   97   T7  J7  Q7   K7
A8  28   38  48  58   68   78  88 .....  98   T8  J8  Q8   K8
A9  29   39  49  59   69   79  89   99  ..... T9  J9  Q9   K9
AT  2T  3T  4T  5T   6T  7T  8T   9T  TT.....  JT  QT   KT
AJ  2J   3J   4J   5J    6J   7J   8J   9J   TJ   JJ ..... QJ   KJ
AQ 2Q  3Q  4Q  5Q   6Q  7Q  8Q  9Q  TQ  JQ  QQ ..... KQ
AK 2K  3K   4K    5K  6K    7K  8K  9K  TK  JK   QK   KK

Does anyone agree ?

There are 169 starting hands

78 different suited hands
78 different unsuited hands
13 pocket pairs

=169 distinct starting hands

Reversing hands, A3o instead of 3Ao, as you point out, makes no difference.

Q5o according to SK (Skylansky-Karlsson) hand rankings which are used in conjunction with most ICM calculators.

It varies those hand calling ranges put more value on high card value, whereas pushing ranges put more value on suited connectivity.

Ok'

So there are 78 different hands and 13 pocket pairs  78 + 13 = 91 hands

What is the point of this?

Ok'

So there are 78 different hands and 13 pocket pairs  78 + 13 = 91 hands

Those 78 different hands can be suited or off suit. So 78*2=156 + 13 = 169.

Ok,

If there are only 91 different hands (not counting suited ones), If I play the top 15 starting hands, 15/91 = 1/6

should I get dealt a good hand every 6 deals.

I once folded for an hour and never had a good hand, Is this a record ?

No, on a bad day you could play for ten hours without getting some good cards.

Also, 27o is twice as common than AA. There's twice as many ways to make it

12 ways to make 27o

 2d  7c
2d 7h
  2d 7s
  2c 7d
 2c 7h
 2c 7s
 2h 7c
 2h 7d
 2h 7s
 2s 7c
 2s 7d
 2s 7h

6 ways to make AA

 Ad Ac
 Ad Ahrt
 Ad Aspades
 Ac Ahrt
 Ac Aspades
 Aspades Ahrt

1326 hands if you like, with each one being equally likely

936 unsuited  (78x12)
312 suited   (78x4)
78 pocket pairs  (13x6)

Prob of getting aces 6/1326  (220 to 1)
prob of getting AKs  4/1326  (330 to 1)
Prob of gettin AKo  12/1326  (110 to 1)

So if you want to add up Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Tens, AKs, AKo and AQs

(6+6+6+6+6+4+12+4)/1326

=50/1326

So you'll get one of those eight hands every 27 deals.
