Title: Blonde Stock Market Challenge
Post by: Laxie on September 01, 2008, 07:40:10 PM
Someone told me about this site earlier today and I've been checking it out.  Seems like it might be good.  Ever wanted to chance yer arm with the stock market?  Reckon you've got what it takes to double yer money, but don't have the money to prove it?  I've set up a stock market challenge for Blonde.  Test your skills as a stock broker with play money.  It runs until October 2nd, but I can sort a longer one if there's interest after that.  Top Blonde has bragging rights at the end of the month.

You can find it here:

http://www.howthemarketworks.com/stock-market-game/contest-status.php?cid=285

Password to join the group is chiprich

Now then  ;slavedriver; and  ;goodluck;

When you've signed up and you're in the 'Blonde Contest' section, click on the wee 'my account' box to the right.  There you'll see a 'trade now' tab.  Go there and start picking the stocks you'd like to buy.  You have 100,000 to spend, so happy shopping!

I've only 1 company so far.  Been searching the web all night for ideas on what to buy.   Trying to steer clear of the obvious ones as we're only in this for a month to start and those types of stocks don't move much in such a short time...usually.

If I buy 4 Al Murray tickets for a £5 each I should be able to sell them for multiples of this within a month

who needs the stockmarket? (sorry Rooks, go get your money back)

$22.45 left enough for 4 1/2 price Al murray tickets

I did consider keeping $100k in cash as this may have a good chance of winnning but lump it all on a bankrupt mortgage insurer FTW.

If I play this, I say goodbye to my remaining life

I can't just throw darts, it means research and company visits and forensic examination of accounts

If I do that I might get tempted to get a City job again

If I do that I'll be dead in a year

Forgive me, but someone else can win this

Anyone can join at any point in the month.

LOL how complex is this ... How do I actually buy shares ?

When you're at the Blonde Poker Contest page, go to 'My Account' listed on the right hand side.

Once you're in your account, click on 'Trade Now' and in that window is a wee box that says Symbol over it.  Click on the (? Look up) next to that and it will take you here  http://www.howthemarketworks.com/trading/symbol-lookup.php

Enter the name of any company you're interested in to get their stock market trading symbol.  You can see a chart of their performance over the past 6 months, check out the latest news regarding the company...all kinds of things.

And if it's still too much to deal with, just go to 'Throw Darts' and they'll pick some random ones for you.

the game has an option where, if you think a particular share is going down, or indeed the whole market is going down, you can sell shares you do not own and profit that way

I sold 3 market vehicles (2 in emerging markets) to profit from this

I think markets are going down

when I stop thinking this I'll close the position and use the money+profits to buy stocks

If you've got that good an insight is it really that stressfull to do a little bit on the side and not get back into it fully and keep earning?

Or do you still drop in and out of it from time to time?

* Stress

* My Personality (if you do it you can't do it half-hearted)

* I drop in and out occasionally but ONLY when I have real risk capital spare (ie if I lose it all, I can walk away relaxed)

there is an option on the game

"sell short"

still within the $100,0000 limit lets say you want to sell $10,000 worth of Bank of America at $20 per share you put in an order to "sell short" 500 shares and that accounts for $10k of your portfolio

When the shares fall, buy (BUY) at a profit

beware though, if the shares go up your profits will fall dramatically

So its more a short term traders technique

My whole strategy so far has been to use all my money to buy Apple shares which will soar in value when they launch all of their really good new products yesterday.

Unforunatly the sum total of their new products are a taller Ipod Nano and a slightly thinner Ipod touch, obviously investors are not impressed and the share price has now dipped even further leaving me $10k out of pocket. GG me WP not.

I suspect there are going to be some big gainers today. About 2/3 of my portfolio was Goldman Sachs, which had lost 35% of its value in 2 weeks. Yesterday I decided that it was ridiculously undervalued (I keep an eye, as I've got some for real having worked for them 8 years ago), and traded in the remaining 1/3 (random pick that also worked very badly) for GS.. In premarket trading today it's up 33% :D. Wish I'd done that for real yesterday now...

Question is, is the rally going to last longer than a day? Have the naked-short-sellers given up?
