Title: Computor Help
Post by: The_nun on September 05, 2008, 11:02:37 AM
I have some how managed to delete or move a spreadsheat with all very important info on it. Last time I used the said file was around 3 weeks back. I have looked as best I can on the lappy but all it keeps saying is ..This item .xlr that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved. Do you want to delete shortcut.

Anyone know where to look, my recycle bin has loads of old stuff in so cant see that it would have been emptied and it is not in there.

If you've moved it, try doing a search by the name of the spreadsheet. You can even state when it was modified last to narrow down the search.

If it's not found in the search, and not in your bin then  :dontask:

If you're sure you got the name right in the search and it didn't find it then it's probably gone.

Ensure in the search that the option to search subfolders was included, and if you're not certain of the name then you'll have to search for some text that you know was in the file.

But it's not sounding hopeful.

oh, one last thing. I'm pretty sure you can search for ANY file modified on a certain date. You might have to search through loads of info, but may be worth a try.

it just keeps saying it is a shortcut.

Then I'm sorry to say that it sounds like you have deleted the actual file, direct from your drive.

There are some undelete programs about that may recover it, but the longer you leave it the less there is a chance of recovering the file intact (the file is still there, you are just unable to see it. The file will get written over eventually). Not sure how much they are as I downloaded my naughty copy some time ago.

Perhaps someone knows of a free program available?

If you right-click on it and go to the Shortcut tab, it'll tell you where it's trying to look for the file in the Target box.

What does that say?

Never used it before, but you could try this:

http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/

Going to download it now and see if it's any good.

but don't download it direct to your lappy, use another pc or a usb pen to save it to. Otherwise you may end up writing over the file your looking for.

Basically the file you are clicking on is a shortcut, the original document has been

a) moved
b) renamed
c) deleted for good..

Best way to search for it goto start -> Search -> Files and folders.. All files and folders and type in the search box '*.xls' without the quotations.. This lists every spreadsheet on your PC.. go through them one by one til you find it. If you don't find it there unfortunately it is gone for good.

Where was it searching in local disk C: or something else?

Just to double check it is *.xls (Shift and 8 for the *)

I use 'Undelete Plus' kin, works very well. Is there a free version? I'd look for something myself but I'm off out soon.

Maureen, try it with xlr, not xls.

searched under date created still only comes up with a sortcut that has either been changed or moved.

Also downloaded the site that Ginger referred to but that comes up with loads of stuff that i cant see the perticular file.

If it is that important, stop using the PC that it is on now. You may overwrite the deleted file. Time by itself isn't an issue, but overwriting it whilst using the PC is a possibility.

I'll send you a version of 'recover my files' if you want to try it yourself, or..

Is it a laptop?

I will be in grosvenor Bolton tonight, bring the lappy along and I'll search for deleted items. Or if its a desktop I'll take it home with me, or you can bring it to Manchester.
