Title: BlueSq.com GUKPT Bolton: Final Day
Post by: NoflopsHomer on September 07, 2008, 01:34:12 PM
It's final day time! ;woohoo;

Rob Sherwood -- 349,300
Ali Mallu -- 329,100
Tony Cascarino -- 282,300
Roberto Romanello -- 211,400
Sid Harris -- 132,100
Greg Hunt -- 131,100
Dennis Clough -- 128,200
Tim Flanders -- 85,000
Kevin O'Leary -- 51,900
Surinder Sunar -- 51,500

With the blinds starting at 5k/10k/500, no-one, apart from maybe the top four, can feel too safe...

Well, after traipsing down Wigan Road in the pouring rain (it was just drizzle when we set out), a soggy Floppy/Sloppy combo has finally reached their destination and are braced and raring to go. Meanwhile, the players have just this second been called back for the debagging, unpacking and recounting process and should be ready for the off in the next few minutes.

Before I announce the starting whistle, a quick dilemma for you that bamboozled me this morning. I have two pairs of boxers left. Comfy ones with holes, uncomfy ones without holes. Which should I have worn?

After an overnight redraw, today's seating positions are as follows...

Table Floppy:

Seat 1: Surinder Sunar
Seat 2: Kevin O'Leary
Seat 3: Rob Sherwood
Seat 4: Greg Hunt
Seat 5: Tony Cascarino

Table Snoopy:

Seat 1: Dennis Clough
Seat 2: Roberto Romanello
Seat 3: Tim Flanders
Seat 4: Ali Mallu
Seat 5: Sid Harris

One man who briefly contested the proposed redraw was short stack Tim Flanders. He suggested that it was unfair, and perhaps unnecessary, that he could hit the big blind twice in a row.

Action first hand as Greg Hunt raises to 40k from UTG and it's passed to Kevin O'Leary in the big blind who moves all-in for another 10k and says, "Think about this before you decide if you should call..."

Hunt makes the auto-call and O'Leary says, "Well, I'm ahead at the moment," flipping Ac Ad. Hunt turns over Ks Jd.

9h 5d 2d Qs Ahrt is pretty decisive and now Lovejoy is only a short stack. As opposed to a very short stack. For some reason he's trying to mate his giraffees as well.

And after avoiding almost certain doom amid yesterday's controversy, Kevin O'Leary has turned 2,000 acorns into 245,000 mighty oak trees. This time it was Rob Sherwood who was the recipient of the Londoner's early afternoon surge, his Td Ts on the small blind not quite enough to fend off Kevin's Aspades Ks on the button when the board came 3c 4s 5s Kd 3d. A cracking start for Kevin, who now has chirping chips - "I think I need a paramedic" - but an unavoidable early slip for Rob who clearly has his heart set on gold.

The very next hand, and on the same table, Greg Hunt pushed in preflop and took down the blinds uncontested.

It's do-diddly disaster for Tim Flanders. After Dennis Clough passed his A-4 to Roberto's push with 6-6, Clough then moved in again in the next hand from the button on Flanders' big blind. After a brief pause and a realisation that he had so little chips, Tim went for it with Ks Qd and found himself flipping against Clough's Jd Jh.

The board hinted hope but ultimately was frustrating for the Springfield inhabitant coming Aspades 9s 4s Ahrt Ad.

(http://blondepoker.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=20760&g2_serialNumber=1)

There was a count down and it was found that Tim still has 5,000 chips left. Can he recover?

And like a trump in the wind, Tim (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=433) Flanders (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=433) is gone. On the very next hand, Roberto (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=376) Romanello (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=376) made it 25,000 from the button with Ac 9s and Tim announced all-in, even though his paltry 3,800 wasn't enough to pay the small blind. Peeling back his cards one by one, Tim was relieved to find he had, at least, two live cards... but not just any two live cards. "It's the hammer!" shouted a member of the rail. And although I glanced at the door in the hope that everyone's favourite baggy trousered MC had entered the building, our onlooker was referring to the 7d 2d that lay on the felt. A deuce would have been amusing, but it wasn't to be, the board coming a rather clinical Ahrt Ks 8s 8d 4s to send Flanders back to Springfield.

"Final!"

Jonathan Raab said that he didn't want to play down to 10 last night because it could go on for multiple levels, and once you've said you'll play down to nine, you have to stick to it. Then when it gets to 4am or whatever, people are tired, return tomorrow in bad shape, etc, etc. He said that a redraw was made because the rules state that a redraw should take place at the end of every day's play, and it would be inconsistent to have done differently yesterday. Personally, I think it would be worth modifying the rules for next year so that, say, if there were still two tables left on the penultimate day, no draw is made. I'm not a big fan of redraws anyhow, at any time.

Jon Raab is introducing the players to the table to the sounds of 'Insomnia' by Faithless and giving them some interesting soundbites.

Ali Mallu -- 'Fear has been ripped out of his dictionary'
Roberto Romanello -- 'I like to call him Goberto Gobanello'
Sid Harris -- 'Even he doesn't know how he makes so many final tables'
Kevin O'Leary -- 'Representing colour-changing giraffees'

As Floppy alluded to, there were some intriguing gems from Jonathan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1666) Raab (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1666) as the players made their entrance, but I think my personal fave was... "Tony (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772) Cascarino (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772)... representing, er... well, I'm not sure what country he's representing today."

First hand finds Rob Sherwood raising to 26k and Ali Mallu making the call from the button.

Jh 6c 4h

Rob bets 36k and Ali folds Aspades Qd face up.

This doesn't phase Ali though and he raises and takes the blind next hand.

Surinder is next, and his raise takes down the blinds to keep his head above the water.

Greg (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2235) Hunt (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2235) is out and becomes the 9th finisher winning £4,400

Roberto takes the blinds with a raise to 30k.

Ali Mallu tries the same thing with a 30.5k raise UTG. It's passed to Tony Cascarino in the big blind, and Tony asks how much Ali is playing before moving all-in for 400k or so. Ali quickly folds. Mallu just got Mallued.

Sid Harris moves in and takes the blinds.

Look closely, and you'll see Kevin has two giraffes with him today. He must have bought one overnight. What I don't understand, however, is if they are in the same location, why they are different colours. Surely the light, humidity, or whatever causes them to change complexion would be the same. "It's technical stuff, Snoopy," claimed Kevin. "You wouldn't understand."

Dennis Clough raises to 29k and Kevin O'Leary moves all-in from the small blind. Dennis, who we probably know the least about on the final table, but has impressed this week, doesn't think long and folds.

Ali Mallu raises UTG and against it's passed to Tony Cascarino in the big blind who moves all-in again forcing Ali to fold K-Q face up. Mallu is Mallued once more!

It doesn't stop him though and he raises the next hand also with Roberto calling from the big blind. Both check the 7d 5h 4c and when Roberto fires out 45k on the 8s turn, there's very little else that Dennis can do but fold.

Surinder Sunar raises to 28k from the cut-off and Roberto moves all-in from the small blind, the slow casualness that the former WPT winner usually displays is non-existant as he quickly puts his remaining chips with flipping Ac Kh as Roberto shows Jh Jd.

3c 8d Ahrt 3s Qh

(http://blondepoker.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=20804&g2_serialNumber=1)

Surinder's count is around 67k and he gains a much needed double up. Roberto still has around 250k.

Kevin O'Leary raises to 35,000 on the button. Surinder Sunar, who treats every hand in the same slow considerate style, thinks for a while before folding while Tony Cascarino quickly moves all-in and Kevin folds as fast. It seems the former footballer is determined to use his stack as much as possible forcing his nearest rivals to really find a hand and eliminate any possible skill advantage that he thinks they might have. This I think is perhaps the fifth or sixth time where's made his huge re-raise all-in and they've got through each time so far.

Of course, the consistent all-in moves do work, every time, but once.

Surinder Sunar is out and becomes the 7th place finisher winning £7,000

Kevin O'Leary limps under the gun, Surinder Sunar raises to 38,000 and Kevin calls.

On a Js 8s 5c, Kevin checks, Surinder bets 45,000 and Kevin calls.

Kevin then announces all in on the 5s turn, leaving Surinder in a quandary that results in a long pause.

Kevin, seemingly unnerved by the wait, plays up to the camera and begins chatting to Rob Sherwood next door, almost as if he wasn't even in the hand.

Surinder, meanwhile, remains as stoic as usual, his hands on his chin as he pensively, and quietly mulls over his decision. As the clock ticks on, the crowd gradually close in on the table.

Eventually a clock is called, and, after twitching the bottom of his stack as if about to push, Surinder does indeed slide his chips across the line with 30 seconds to spare.

However, to his dismay, the former WPT winner is drawing dead with Ac Kc versus 6h 5h, meaning the river is academic.

Ali calls

Dennis: Aspades 5s

Ali: Kc Js

The turned nuts for Ali leaves Dennis heading for the rail after three days of good play being justly rewarded.

Dennis Clough goes out in 6th place winning £8,750

Roberto Romanello raises from UTG and Ali Mallu moves all-in from the big blind. Roberto calls and finds his Aspades Jc has Ali's Ahrt Th pipped by one.

2h Qs 8c Qh 9s means the Welshman's jack kicker players and he doubles up to about 360k.

Meanwhile Rob Sherwood is down to just 150k and looking frustrated, partially down to a seeming lack of cards and also partly, I suspect, due to the fact that any skill edge he may have is being completely negated by Mallu and Cascarino's continual big all-in moves which means we're seeing lots of all-in preflop action and very little post flop play.

Back round to Ali who then announced all in. After Rob had folded, Kevin made the call almost as quickly as Ali had pushed and the cards were turned over.

Ali = Qd Jh
Kevin = 4c 4h

Whilst Kevin drops below 300,000, Ali now has over 400,000 in chips.

Ali limps for 12k. Kevin O'Leary completes in the small blind before Tony Cascarino spoils the fun but raising an additional 100k. Ali and Kevin pass. Tony shows jacks.

Roberto raises to 31,500 from UTG, Ali calls in the big blind. They check a 8d Ks Qh Aspades 7d board the whole way where Ali's Qs 5s is good.

Next Kevin raises to 31k and Roberto makes the call from the small blind.

Ahrt 6d 5s

Kevin bets 21k, Roberto raises to 80k and Kevin quickly folds. During this hand Rob Sherwood comes up to chat, "All I'm getting is 4-2, 8-3 and the like, not even a Q-T or connectors, it's a nightmare."

Rob does complete the small blind in the next hand though, after Ali Mallu has limped and Kevin O'Leary checks. The flop comes Qd 2h 9c and the action is checked to Mallu, who of course bets 12k. Rob folds once more and Kevin calls. Both players check the 3s turn and Kh river.

"1 pair" declares Ali.

"How big?" asks Kevin.

"The smallest one on the flop."

Kevin turns over 7c 2s but he's been pipped by the Mallu limp with Jd 2d.

On the very next hand after eliminating Kevin O'Leary, Ali Mallu found A-K and reraised Tony Cascarino's button raise all in. Tony folded A-7 suited.

Then, when Ali was on the button, he found A-T and took the blinds, much to a frustrated Rob Sherwood's annoyance as he shook his head and threw 6-2o onto the felt.

But it didn't end there though, as Ali won his fourth hand in a row. With Ali and Roberto Romanello both limping preflop, Rob folded the small blind and Tony checked his option. Ali then took it down with a bet of 28,000 on a n 8d 7d Ks flop.

It took him three hands to achieve his goal though. First he pushed from the button to take down the blinds, then he chopped an A-Q versus A-Q encounter with Ali (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) Mallu (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) on an ensuing rainbow board, before finally hitting that 200,000 mark. With Ali raising it up to 52,000 from the button, Roberto (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=376) Romanello (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=376) folded his small blind and Rob went into the tank. After a short dwell, and knowing that Ali was committed to the pot, Rob made the push with 3c 3s for a total of 118,500. To everyone's surprise, Ali hesitated, and asked how much it cost. Eventually, he acknowledged that he couldn't passed and called with the Hammer, 7s 2h, much to the amusement of the onlooking crowd. The 5s 9s 4d Qd 4s board missed Ali's hand, allowing Rob to take the pot. "I'm going to need to win a race," declared Rob before any hands were shown. You can never assume anything when you're playing Mr Mallu.

If Lawrence Gosney had also made this final with Ali, we'd have already been home by now.

And this is where Ali Mallu's reputation gets him pots that other people just will never get.

Rob Sherwood in the last hand before the break, raises to 33k from the button and Mallu makes the call from the big blind.

7s Tc 3c

Ali moves all-in, Rob rechecks his cards and thinks for about 20 seconds before calling. Ali turns over Th 9d and a grimace comes over Sherwood's face as he flips Ahrt 7h. The turn is the 8s and the river is the 9s making two pair as the Mallu express derails yet another opponent.

On a Th 4h 5s flop, Ali Mallu check calls 20,000 from Roberto Romanello, before check-raising Roberto's 20,000 bet on the Td turn to a total of 73,000. Roberto flat calls. A Tc on the river triggers a brief pause from Ali, before he leads out for 110,000. Roberto calls. Ali shows Qd Ts for quads, Roberto flips a 5c. ali Mallu is now a huge chip leader, whilst Roberto will now be looking for a spot to push, much like Rob Sherwood when they were four-handed.

After that crippling, it became a waiting game before Roberto was all-in.

Roberto moved all-in for little more than 50k from the small blind after Ali passed.

"I don't think I can pass any two cards here."

"You called?" said Roberto, flipping Kh Th...

Tony began to laugh, "No I said I don't think I can pass any two cards!" Then he folded face up Ks 3h having seen he was dominated.

Roberto decided to not push his next button and Tony limped in. Ali immediately raised to 65k, to which Tony quickly declared he was all-in. Roberto jumped up for a second, but Ali passed and Tony showed A-K.

After another round where Roberto had to give up his blinds, he was left to push on the button for 36k, and Ali called him blind in the big blind.

Roberto flipped Jd Th, Ali showed 8s.....then the 3h

2s 3d 2h 4d Ac

Roberto Romanello is OUT in 3rd place winning £21,900

The HU promises to interesting, if not the reason being that when the final table began, Tony Cascarino was the only player to make any headway into Ali Mallu's stack by just making big shoves against Mallu's raises, and he's not afraid to press the big red button if he needs it. This one doesn't look like a war of attrition, one big hand will do it.

Now watch the exact opposite happen. ::)

Tony Cacscarino has doubled up! All the money flew in on a 3s 7s 4d flop with Tony making the final call with Qd 7d and Ali lagging behind with 8c 4h. Td turn and 2h river were of no use, meaning stack are almost even.

Ali (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) Mallu (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) has imploded.

Tony raises to 70k from the small blind/button. Ali says, "Lets gamble then!" and moves all-in.

Tony instantly calls and shows Ks Kc. Ali is in what can only be described eloquently as  'deep shit' when he flips Kd 8c.

(http://blondepoker.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=20868&g2_serialNumber=1)

9s Qd 4d 3s 9h

Tony doubles his almost 850k stack. Ali is down to the felt with about 50k.

Soon after though Mallu manages to get lucky with 8c 5d against Tony's Qs 2s on a 2h 7c 6c 3h 8s board to get himself back to 100k. And now we're on a dinner break! Make sure you're here when we get back, this might not last long.

Back soon!

It's all over! With Ali (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) Mallu (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) announcing all-in preflop, Tony (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772) Cascarino (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772) pulled back his cards, asked how much it was, and promptly called.

Ali = 9h 3h
Tony = Ac 8c

Flop = 5c 3c Tc

"Yes!" exclaims Tony as he punches the air.

Turn = 7c

River = Qh

No escape for Ali on this occasion as former football star Tony (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772) Cascarino (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772) is crowned champion of Bolton.
