Title: My J key
Post by: rossfourfive on September 18, 2008, 03:08:24 PM
My J key has popped off my laptop.

Any ideas/tips/suggestions/advice on how to get it back on? It has tiny little hooks on it which hook onto tiny little metal hooks on the laptop which i can hardly even see. A packet of walkers salt n vinegar to the person that provides me with the best advice.

what kind of laptop is it ?. Sony Vaio
what can you see in the plae where the key used to be ? A wee circular plastic thing (good description eh). It still works just not very efficient. Can post a pic if that would help.
what is still attached to the key ? is there a little x shaped plastic hinge anywhere ? Yea there is, thats the thing with the hooks on it.

pull a different letter off carefully, look at how the bits go together, replicate

You need to hook the key under one side of the keyboard first, then press it so it hooks under the other side, rather than just pressing straight down.

No way! I've spent hours and hours trying to get this one back on, i can't face having two to fix! I think i know how it pieces together it's just the getting it back on the laptop i'm struggling with.

You need to hook the key under one side of the keyboard first, then press it so it hooks under the other side, rather than just pressing straight down.

I think this is a key example of easier said than done. I think the little hooks on the actual laptop have bent so now i can't hook the key under them. Trying to bend them back but they'll prob break.

There is a niche in the market for a key fixing business. Let me know if you set one up.

so you're now trying to bend something because that might be the right thing to do but you're not sure? seriously, just take another one off, they're designed to come off so you can get out the biscuit crumbs you drop under them. once everything's in the right place the keys just pop back on.

Don't worry no bending was required. Its back on but a bit loose.

They may be designed to come off but it takes forever to get them back on.

You could use the on screen keyboard, program a function key or copy and paste.
