Title: I always find these kinda spots tough to play...
Post by: Amatay on October 18, 2008, 08:12:05 PM
Just started a $100 tournament, blinds 20/40 i have AcQh utg+1 and make it 140 to go, CO calls. Flop QJ9 2 clubs. I bet 220 and villian min raises to 440???

Whats your play here and why???

I decided to call even thou i dont know what i wanna see oop so early in a tourn. turn was a 10 and i check folded and said goodbye to about 1/6 of my stack.

I hate these spots, i actually almost open folded AQ pre which i know sounds crazy but in these spots i find you usually you either take a tiny pot or lose a much bigger one??

Help pls :-)

If you're not comfortable playing oop then folding utg +1 isnt a bad move imo

If this guy likes small bets, is it ever worth trying a check / raise on that flop ?

Say you'd stuck in an initial raise to 120 pre, so the pot is 300 for the flop.  If you check and he sticks in, say 180, Would a rerasie to, maybe 540 tell you anything significant ?

Which may cost a few bob more, but you'll know what to do on the turn.

I'm not sure I see the point in flat callling as played. It saves 80 chips, but doesn't do much.  Wouldn't the bet / fold be better ? Even if only for the advertising value alone ?  To prove how easy it is to push you off a hand ?  And if so, would you consider showing the Q ?

Probably been watching too much PAD tbh, but my brain sometimes has these strange thoughts, and I sometimes wonder if they are totally insane thoughts, or if there's any value in them at all ( So far I manage to ignore them , but the voices are getting stronger ..... )

if u check raise, hes likely to still call you in pos, esp with a draw imo. then the pot starts to get bigger. what do u do if u check raise get called and a 2h comes on turn??? fire into an already biggish pot hoping hes on a draw?? you will still get called. even if say another 2 comes on the river you cant value there imo then you are back at check calling and at risk of being bluffed

Check raising is horrible in this spot you make the pot so big with a marginal hand.

I was working on the idea that the board is so horrible a c/r might well make him put down several hands, and if he calls it you just give up and let him take it down whenever he darned well likes after that.

It was just an idea to rep a big hand, and see if he believes you, assuming you had a tight image yourself.

But if you think he'll be calling with odds for a decent range of cards, then obviously it's a waste of time.  It could only work as a one shot bullet.

I'll get me coat  ;marks;

Yeah I probs check flop and see what the turn brings.

I might just get out of the way to this min-raise. It don't like it all that much, every chance he has a bare ten or something, but you're folding to a big bet on the turn so you might as well fold now.

I don't think open folding AQ UTG/UTG+1 is crazy at all in the early levels. If I'm on a table where I know my raise is going to get a few callers and i'll be oop against them then I'll happily fold this.
