Title: Omaha flopped flush...
Post by: MC on October 30, 2008, 04:47:38 PM
I'm a complete novice at Omaha, but I get the basics and as just giving a $15 MTT a whirl.

Is this a cold-deck Omaha style, and did I play the hand okay, or are there things I did wrong?

(Note that my 3bet on the river is actually only a raise of 40 chips. Didn't see the point in flat calling for 40 chips difference)

FWIW IMO a Q high flush is rarely the best hand if played to river in full ring omaha, even on a non paired board. Once you raised his bet on the flop and didn't take it down I wouldn't have put more money in personally unless the opponent is a complete donk

Insta-fold pre-flop.

i agree to both the above

completing in the sb is rarely good play as postion is so important in PLO

And I thought I'd improved from the days where I thought I had a flush holding 6c 8c Jc Kc and a Qc Ts 2s flop ;djinn;

As played, lead flop. I don't mind betting turn vs just a call, but again it shouldn't be a pot bet. Deffo check river unless opp is a donk calling you super light.

The best answer was why get involved preflop imo. However I notice this level 1 of this tournie............there appears to be a lot of chips at this table, what was the starting stack?

3k starting stack...

Like I said I'm a novice at this...to me I saw a double suited, connected hand which I would junk all the time with no money invested, but if I was dealt 42suited in hold 'em I'm always making up the small here so equated it to something like that.

Figured he would play a flush more strongly, although when he min raised the river I guess I was expecting to see it. Check behind on the river is the thing I got most wrong perhaps, it just didn't make sense to me cos I thought you were supposed to bet the nuts, not wait for the board to pair in Omaha...

So we are still in level 1 and we have got 2.5 x starting stack, I'm assuming its a freezeout since the hand details don;t mention rebuy................just remember a MTT is not a sprint...........3rd nuts is very often beaten in Omaha at showdown.............after making up the small blind and then hitting the 3rd nuts you should definetely only be looking to call down bets and so only do the minimum if you are behind imo.

making up the small isnt a mistake here - but you should only be really getting busy oop after the flop if you flop massive. Lead the flop here is fine as it shows you have a hand. Your opponents arent likely to call you with anything bar a flush or set to see if it pairs up.

After the flop bet don't invest any more in this pot as you don't need to be doing your chips here.

You've led out in the small in a 5-way limped pot. It's likely someone has a flush so I'm not putting you on the lead out with a set here. Probably your opponents thinking too. He can peel off a safe turn (just in case) and hope u bet here before he raises.

So we are still in level 1 and we have got 2.5 x starting stack,

I think the chat comment - Enfuego10 said, "that was bound to happen" might provide some insight

Thanks for the comments guys, will work on my Omaha game.

I had doubled up already at this point, someone made a huge all-in bluff when I had a concealed flush. I went on to cash in this and got 2.5x my money back. Woop Woop!

If you are new to a game, a tight passive style is prob best as this will minimise putting yourself in difficult spots eg building big pots out of position with good but not great hands.  After a while you should be able to guage if over aggresive players are exploiting you and pick your spots to call them down.

But it's not hold 'em.

4 2 suited needs to hit A 3 5 rainbow to be the nuts and will rarely remain the nuts through to the river.

The 2 3 that you're holding are more likely to lead to trouble leaving you with Q 9 which again is hardly ever going to give you the nuts.

In omaha I'm usually looking for a good made hand with some decent improvement potential. Anything you hit with this hand pre isn't likely to get improved by your other 2 cards meaning that at best you are playing a none nut hand down to the river hoping for the best.

So erm.... Fold pre.

I get this now, I was just explaining my reasoning at the time, however flawed...
